"Being Creative" - Cheap Outdoor Gear

  • Опубліковано 19 лип 2012
  • Yet another example showing that enjoying the outdoors does not necessarily need to be an expensive endeavor. In fact, in many instances gear and equipment can be acquired and/or made for cheap... or even free. This video illustrates this belief by utilizing items found at a local thrift store to make a durable, lightweight cook kit at a total cost of under 4 bucks. This DIY cook set contains:
    - Stainless Steel Cook Pot (3 1/2 cup capacity)
    - Custom DIY Cook Pot Lid
    - Nested Stainless Steel Cup with Lip Guard (1 cup capacity)
    - Homemade Double-Wall Alcohol Stove
    - 2oz. Fuel Bottle
    - Windscreen
    - Ultra Lightweight Stuff Sack
By simply using a bit of creativity and ingenuity this concept can easily be adapted to pretty much any type of gear for nearly any outdoor activity, whether it be backpacking, hiking, bushcraft, etc.....
    * This video is in response to a "tag" by UA-cam user BushcraftGeek. He issued the challenge of finding items at a local second hand store, garage sale, or even your own basement, and then using a bit of creativity to "re-purpose" them in a manner other than their original intended use... all for as inexpensively as possible. I'd love to see what you come up with my friends!

I find sheet aluminium and copper at salvage yards, then hammer them into things like ashtrays, and pots! Some old farts ask me to hammer parts for the old cars.

You can use the other pantyhose leg to get money from gas stations or liquor stores by simply placing it over your face.

Another use for pantyhose or knee highs is to place the leftover slivers of bar soap into the toe and tie the top. Hang it from a tree or somewhere near your hand washing station, wet your hands, rub the soap, rinse and dry.

Yeah, I was looking online and from what I can tell is that it is from the 60's and worth about $40 on eBay. I will probably just keep it and use it. It is built way better than the Ozark Trail brand one that I found at Wal-Mart

Excellent. I used the exact same one, probably made by the same company, only labeled for Boy Scouts, in the 80's. They work great.

RECOMMENDATION: in 2:42 of the video you show taking apart the lid and ring. IF you leave the ring and modify a metal hanger to fit through the holes, you can have a handy built in pot handle. It does add a smidge of weight.
Great job, I went to the local goodwill and was able to replicate what you did. Thank you so much for putting this video together.
    Happy Trails.

I see you giggling about panty hose. Hmm. Did you know that knee high panty hose worn under your socks will make sure you never get blisters? They also keep ticks off your skin. Ticks can't get through them. I was taught this by a fat old lady sergeant. I tried it and it works!

  • @BrookNBones

If you have an ATV use the left over panty hose to cover the air filter. It keeps large pieces of debris out that might get in and prematurely cause you to have to replace the air filter. When I worked at a dirt track most of the race cars used them to keep big chunks of clay or mud out of their filters so they didn't have to replace them nearly as often. Also works on leaves and twigs.

Great little cheap cook kit. I love making my kit. I think part of bushcraft is making stuff. Save your money of little stuff and spend it on stuff like a nice sleeping bag or tent.

Don't be ashamed of using the pantyhose. It can double as a water strainer/filter when using water from a stream, lake, river, etc.

Thank you. I got called everything because I used them for filtering water. Arm warmers etc.
I just told my mates it's going to drop to -3 I wore them under my jeans I was snug as a bug. They were shaking cold etc lol.

Among the endless uses for pantyhose (many of which are discussed in this string): you can make a grasshopper "trap". Stretch out some hose material on a stick-made frame and walk through grasshopper country. Works like a net. When they come in contact with it some will stick when their spikey legs/feet become entangled in the material. Then, you've got bait, or protein if you want to cook them and crunch them down. (Be sure to roast or fry them to kill any parasites. Then, remove the legs and wings, and pull the head gently off ... the digestive tract should come out with it. The rest is pure protein.)

    • @clayriness6870
      @clayriness6870 9 років тому +6

Also forgot to mention that the same contraption makes a good net for catching bait in a stream. Hold it underwater and slightly downstream of rocks you overturn. Very easy to gather nymphs, larva, pupae, aquatic insects ... even the occasional crawdad. As a former trout guide we did this often to study what to match our wet flies with.

Talk about cheap: the bladders inside 5-liter wine boxes make excellent water carriers. Pry off the spigot, rinse the inside good, and you have a heavy-duty water carrier with a spigot. Or -- with some water inside, freeze the bladder for a long-lasting icepack, which I've used!

I just stumbled on this video. Not sure how I missed it. Love ur videos. One of the best ideas I've had for a not it's intended use items is one u could use with a set like this. A few years ago the stainless steel water bottles were getting a lot of UA-cam action. And all these mod vids were being made on making handles. Same with the pot. Oh sure u can drill some holes and add a bale wire but I always ran into the tilting issue. So I use a copper pipe hanger for water pipes. Continued.......

John, pantyhose is actually a very versatile outdoor utility material. I use it to hold cat fish bait on my hooks, as snake skin sleeves on my hammock and it works as a water filter for extracting water out of soil, etc. when you dig for ground water. It makes it easy to extract water from shoreline muck by catching everything but the water.
The possibilities for pantyhose are huge in an outdoor setting. Makes really good bait bags when making stationary fish attractors too

The biggest bargains I've found recently are buying food wholesale, so much cheap food. Now I know, a lot of people hate buying Chinese. But there are a lot of honest Chinese companies that genuinely believe in selling quality products. I recently bought a $15 full tang 10" knife that is made out of genuine 440C steel (or the chinese variant) with a sheath plus shipping. It's not going to be the best quality, but it's absolutely worth every penny. If you shop around you can save so much money!
