When joining two small pieces of clay that have equal moisture content, scoring is not necessary. However scoring never hurts. If you want to add scoring to your lessons, please do. this is good for older kids, but for younger ones, like 2nd or 1st, it is too long. but a good look for teachers needing to understand how to demonstrate to a class
