I think that the battle of Gojo and Sukuna is not the battle till death but rather it is a battle of reputation. It is battle between the strongest jujutsu sorcerers, so the one who recognizes the other as stronger loses. In the starting of battle, Sukuna was using his own curse powers and his own domain to defeat Gojo but was unsuccessful so he had to rely on ten shadow technique and create a 3 on 1 situation which was his only possible way to defeat Gojo. Also in the mid battle he recognized Gojo as stronger sorcerer than him as he realized that he cannot defeat Gojo without Mahoraga. So as soon as Mahoraga was destroyed, it was already a moral victory for Gojo as now he is recognized as the Strongest Jujutsu Sorcerer of all time. But at the same time it doesn't mean that Sukuna is dead because we know that one of his finger (which is actually a part of his soul) is missing so he will still not cease to exist. Also Kenjaku doesn't seem to be a person who will take orders from others so he might actually was planning that both Sukuna and Gojo wear down each other so that he can take over either of their bodies which will make Kenjaku the new king of curses considering he has been the mastermind behind everything from thousands of years in Jujutsu world.
