A few years ago in Cornwall we to use slates, and all they were was a roofing slate with a piece of chord which was threaded through a hole in the slate and knotted and on the other end with either a finer piece of chord or a piece of nylon swivel and a hook .the slate was then buried in the sand to act as an anchor and the line baited and just covered with sand to keep the gulls away.the beauty of this old way of fishing is that you can arrange the gear in a wide area even in small sandy patches between rocks ,where you couldn't use a set line ,and it's surprising how much power it takes to directly pull them up ,but it's easy with a small spade.

Simple enough I did pretty much the same set up but I did once find a washed up commercial long line with squeeze spring clips that you tie your trace onto super handy if you needed to take the whole trace off for whatever reason you just grab squeeze and it's basically like a really strong clothing pegg,.caught alot of rocking bulls and wrasse but never my target species of flounder plaice or any flatfish really. Good video for anyone who doesn't know as its a productive and if you do it right eco friendly way to fish and as we all know 😂only totally eco friendly way to fish where you only catch exactly what your after is spear fishing I can't think of anything else.

nice bid bud from ex pro long liner try stainless steel mustard viking 4/0's also try moving it down closer to low tide line. you'll probably pick up better quality fish. and for best hook ups pin main line down every few feet... tight lines

Use braided lead line to tie traces onto. Use Amnesia lines for less twist, tie using a loop between two thumb knots on lead line to stop line wrapping around. Use circle hooks to catch jaw and avoid deep hooking which risks losing hooks. Set line below low water line, Attach a round float to inshore end on enough floating rope to cover twice the expected depth.

Historical note . During WW2, dogfish were harvested in mass to feed Europe. Was canned and sold as " Grayfish " Even today, the fish may be spiny dogfish fillers. Chips are still potatoes. ( Until they claim potatoes cause global warming or racism )

It’s not illegal to use set lines in UK SALTWATER unless that’s changed recently.
There are however hefty fines if they are not inspected frequently and cause harm to protected wildlife.
You should set the line at low tide as the tide is coming in, so that you can wait until it’s covered. Then return to wait for the tide to uncover it again.
That way you can avoid birds getting hooked and also dispatch fish promptly without them dying a slow death on the beach and getting eaten by other wildlife.

the trouble with brick line, is its twisted line and gets easily tangled, go for a braided line, such as para cord or similar.

Used to do this with my dad and brother at Blackpool as a kid in the 60s, caught plaice, dabs, cod, eels, haddock, ling and whiting, sometimes nothing, even back then industrial fishing was taking its effect, must be fished out by now.

On a rough bottom like that the crabs are going to gobble up your bait, maybe move your line out further to a sandy bottom or stake your line higher in the water. just a suggestion great video.

virtually all forms of sea fishing around the UK means dealing with crabs etc. the only way to avoid that is by using a float. but most british fish feed on the bottom, so that is where the bait needs to be. eels will hook themselves, which is exactly what you want in a survival situation. (i think its now illegal to remove silver eels from the sea or rivers, but in a survival situation you wouldnt have any choice) conger eels are good eating.

I eat meat and fish but please be aware theses fish feel pain so don’t make them suffer needlessly.

What other ways could you anchor the lines without carrying big anchors

How do you qualify your comment on conservation? And yes your right about the hooks.

  • @Coastalsurvivalschool

The line is anchored with rocks and runs from the beach straight out to sea.

Hi, good video. I'm not criticising you at all as been looking into kite fishing, which basically takes the long line out to up to 1km if you have a big enough spool. Just wondering if you have looked into the laws regs etc of long lining etc. Cheers great vid

Try circle hooks , they are better for keeping fish on for a long time ... also have a look at Pauls fishing kites site , there are easier more productive ways for what you are doing .

Where did you get your line it looks good an thick, i usual use 30 pound backing line for my salmon fishing gear, it might be strong but it's very thin, one idea i got from a mate would be to use a brickies line, any sugestions would be a help. cheers Al.

was the ends of the main line tied down then covered with the loose rocks?

  • @pacman4568
    @pacman4568 5 років тому

So after baiting them you walk away any chance a child could walk into the line and get a hook in it's foot

The problem with this style of fishing is that it allows eels, crabs, shell crawlers access to the baited hook, there by eating the bait, ment to catch fish. Thank you for posting the video, because in the end, you use what is at hand, to feed yourself in a life threatening ordeal.

nobody goes to jail in a survival situation. its not illegal as far as i know? in a survival situation catching a duck or a cormorant could mean the difference between eating and starving to death. id be interested to know where you heard of a man getting jailed for any amount of time for fishing a long line. i highly doubt it. you wouldnt get 5 months in prison for shooting protected species let alone accidentally catching one on a fishing line.

you should of let the dog fish go, not very good conservation and not good leaving hooks unattended once tides gone out, try skip diving at back of tesco
