  • Jim Chung shows us some interesting facts about cleaning our telescopic optics that we didn't know. Jim is a member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada-Toronto Centre and gave his talk at the Recreational Astronomy Night meeting, which was held at the Ontario Science Centre on October 9, 2019.

    Good video. The centrifuge test is interesting but residue in a volatile solution would be non-volatiles; not just suspended solids. Of course, dissolved solids would also be left behind once fully evaporated. Might be interesting to put cleaning solution in a shallow glass dish and let evaporate. Compare to another clean dish.

    Good video but I'm not sure that forming magnesium sulphate crystals on glass is a good analogue for atmospheric dirt, unless of course that is the contamination that is actually forming and that which can be various biofilms, oils organic and inorganic materials. Some will be polar others not. You need to choose the right solvent and in some cases that means a polar and non-polar solvent to get rid of everything.
