I stumbled across this version years ago and have come back many times to listen to it, it is my favorite performance of this song. The pianist goes all in too if you can tear your eyes off the vocalist. I’ve never seen waitress either by the way 😅

I didn't love Waitress but this is one hell of a ballad. Especially when performed like that. Holy shit, never thought I'd see the day you would react to a musical. I've loved Broadway since I was a baby. The music and performances you have available in this genre is so widely varying, there's got to be something you would actually like. Rent would be one of my favorites, and I'm super excited about going to see The Last Five Years in April which is not as well known. Anyway, great reaction! I can always count on you to go in with an open mind, and if this doesn't prove it, well I don't know what will!

Ah I love this song, the lyrics just really get to me every time :( I think Sara Bareilles original version really speaks to me a bit more personally, maybe because I know she wrote the song and its semi-autobiographical (and her style is less musical theatre too, the more understated kind of pain in it works more for me), but Alison did a beautiful version too.

Agree, one of my favorites. I need to see the musical

Oh holy shit 😭😭😭😭 I don't know Alison and I haven't heard her version... Chills and tears in the first few lines.
Yeah, it's always awkward hearing a musical number sung outside of the context of the entire performance for the reasons you are listing. But Alison is KILLING it!

I've heard a few versions, but this was stunning. The emotion really did come through.

@@Isamarae all of the emotions 😭 the desperation and the anger and the fear and the resentment. The first actress, I believe, who performed it on Broadway, Jessie Mueller (?), I thought did an excellent job... But she didn't have the fragility for me that Alison has.
Funnily enough, I think that's probably why I really enjoyed Jeremy Jordan's cover. He brings a really vulnerable undertone to the song too.

The first version of this song I ever heard was Jessie Mueller's performance at the Tony awards, and it stopped me in my tracks

You are conflating musicals with movie musicals 😬 it's like how I am going to tell you to stay the absolute FK away from the movie musical version of Cats because Taylor Swift played a cat they wrote for her and she wrote a song for that cat and... That entire movie just NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED... Foooooosaaaaaa... Anywho 😂
Especially movie musicals are a 50/50 hit and miss for me. Musicals for me personally... As a full tilt choir kid up to adult choir and chamber choir person, were the life-blood that kept us not fully indoctrinated by religious compositions and not exploited by rubbish choral arrangements of pop music 😂
Never watched any of the High School Musical movies before though 😂 I try to have some standards 😂😂😂💀💀💀💀
I haven't listened to how you take this song yet, but I still remember the day Sara Bareilles dropped this song in 2015 as a single. I was OBSESSED with Sara Bareilles around the late 2000s (about 12 years before I got into Swift 😬🙈) and early 2010s. I remember as a single before she had written the entire musical, this song felt really special.
It wasn't unlike the other music she was writing at the time... But it felt really purposeful.
Other than Sara singing this song herself... I'd actually say that probably my next favourite cover of the song is by Broadway big-hitter Jeremy Jordan 😊 there is/was a popular trend called Broadway Backwards... Broadway stars do gender swapping covers of some of the most famous hit musical tunes written specifically for men/women.
Jordan's cover of this song is really lovely 😊

Stop talking about Dancer In The Dark... No one is over that movie yet. It's 20+ years too soon for EVERYONE 😂😂😂 🦢🦢🦢
Great, I'm just full on weeping now 😂😂😂 that was an incredible performance! She really, really nailed the desperation in the character's story. The character isn't just a woman who has gotten stuck and regrets who she could have been. It's a musical. It's never just stuck-in-the-what-could-have-been storyline 😂 Her character is, from what I can remember about the non musical movie (with Kerri Russell from The Americans and Nathan Fillion from Firefly), I think in her late 20s/early 30s stuck as a small town diner waitress. She specialises in pie making (big part of the super cool cinematography of the movie). She is married to an abusive alcoholic and just as she's on the cusp of being able to leave him (she's saved up money for months)... When she finds out he's gotten her pregnant. Drama ensues.
I'm so lucky that you reacted to this one. I've seen so many people either from Broadway or "ordinary" covers that I probably wouldn't have gotten around to hearing her rendition and I am so happy I did 🥺
So many of the other people I've seen perform this go faaaar over the top. As you've said, Alison just gets the balance so perfectly right 🥺
I've never heard any of the other musical numbers from Waitress. But Sara Bareilles wrote the entire musical... I don't think it's going to be rubbish 😬

It’s such a good film though!

    • @emmavink
      @emmavink 9 днів тому

@@markabusireactions it's so fking good. It's the exact same gut-shanking ending that China Town gives me. And while it's not a musical, that INCREDIBLE horn (can't remember if it's a sax or a trumpet) refrain from China Town is just as haunting as Bjiork's voice is.... JFC... I need to go watch something cheerful 😂 the ending of Shawshank is like My Little Pony compared to those two 🙈
