Agreed, although I do think that 'Blood And Chocolate' from 1986 was the last decent record. Not consistently, but there were a couple great songs on there. After that? No. But you're exactly right. '77 - '80/81 were his creative peak.
I've seen Elvis four times and very few bands could even play on the same bill without being humiliated, that's how great his melody, lyrics, voice and band, the Attractions. I can't believe how underappreciated he still is. Lyrically, few people can match his wordplay and cutting commentary.
Apparently, a few years back, Elvis Costello got in a Taxi and asked to go to Chelsea, and the Taxi driver laughed manically.. I read this in a newspaper a while back..
It's punk rock, mixed with a little ska and about three other things. Elvis Costello had a ton of great songs just like this between 1977 and about 1986.
""Chelsea was/is a pretty trendy upscale area in London for rich artsy types and nouveau riche rock stars like Mick Jagger, Chelsea is full of coffee shops, clothing shops, and little townhouse mansions where the beautiful people live and play. It's a sybarite's and urban renewalist's paradise.""
I read Andy NZ's comment and had to chuckle. When Elvis' first LP came out I was working in a record store and got into a HUGE argument with the store manager who refused to play the album because he thought Elvis was a geek and a loser. I, of course, felt I had to tell him Elvis that was the greatest thing to hit rock in a decade and would sneak the LP on and blast it through the store whenever he wasn't looking. I'm sure he wanted to fire me but I was the guy they'd send customers to when they said, "I don't know the name of the song or the artist, but it goes like this . . ." and then proceed to hum or sing unrecognizable versions of songs. Look around - those WERE the good old days!
Warning to all fans of this video. I just received an official notice from UA-cam that this video is now blocked due to Copyright violations. I uploaded this in July of 2006. It's now September of 2015. Pretty good run, I would say. 9 years. For now, it still appears to be available, but it may not last long, so take one last look!
Gentlemen. I think we can all agree on two things. 1) The kid that wrote that resoundingly uninformed comment had to have been somewhere around 12 or 13 years old at the time, and 2) we all love Elvis Costello. The kid may be 17 by now and hopefully embarrassed by it.
Jonas brothers?? What are you 12? If you like what's force fed to you through The Disney Channel, go for it. This is creative and melodic with great lyrics, and is timesless. Years after it was recorded, it's still fresh and great. No one is going to know or care who the Jonas Bros are a year or two from now, if not sooner. That's all I'm saying.
all his music vids make him look really goofy, but his music is so kick ass. do you think he was trying to make a point? or..he's actually that goofy lol
It was just his schtick back then. You know, like Elvis Presley had his sneer, and the Beatles had their "yeah, yeah, yeah's". It was just a thing during that period. No big.
guys, stop making fun of the Jonas brothers! They have made significant musical contributions too! Like... um, gimme a minute... actually, you know what? Screw the Jonas brothers. that is all.
I had the pleasure of meeting Elvis at a gig in Bournemouth last month and got my cherished copy of Get Happy!! signed. Couldn't resist giving him a copy of my bands EP too, we're huge fans! Check out our stuff on our channel or Google 'The Lost Boys Southampton' if you fancy hearing some modern day Costello-inspired pop!
Good question. Some 12 year olds who think Jonas Brothers is really great music, brought it up. I tried to explain that that is NOT great music, and was manufactured by The Disney Channel. What are you gonna do? Elvis Costello's music will be around forever. Jonas Brothers? Maybe till next Thursday. Disney is the Religion of Goofy.
That's from the 1985 John Hughes film called 'Weird Science', starring Anthony Michael Hall. It's about a couple teen misfits who design their ideal woman on a computer and through a freak accident (I'm guessing electrical storm), she actually comes to life, and helps them become super cool dudes. Not based on a true story.
Around 1980 I was going out with a girl who thought that Elvis was seriously geeky and uncool. The stupid cow didn't realise that he was so beyond geeky he was ultra cool. I got a new GF.
this song is really weird. the guy in the video is really weird. nick Jonas has a weird taste(but i still love him). i'll stick to Jonas brothers music :]

I never rated Elvis Costello but for pure excitement, this is hard to beat.
another great tune. For me the best of Elvis Costello are the first 4 years of this career....

For all these years, I've wanted to tell Elvis that i totally agree with him about not wanting 2 go 2 Chelsea. This is the day.
Maybe the coolest thing thats ever happened anywhere ever.
I absolutely LOVE the eerie keyboard in this song.
My Favorite intro of any song! Reminds me of me Dad, rockin out in the car when i was kid! Love it!
I love the bass line in this song. It shapes the entire song.
As a drummer I have to agree, not only does it sound great but it's fun to play!
I feel like this would be a really great ska song! Its got that happy-go-lucky bassline that seems like it would fit right in that genre.
Great job in the setup because the fuzz doesn't get ugly, stays consistent.
lI lived on St. Loo Ave. in Chelsea in 1988, I love Chelsea and the Kings Road. Chelsea rocks as well as the Sloan Square tube station...
I was at Chelsea two years ago. Good day.
I love that you were right.
You were so right.
Exactly as I stated 3 years ago. Thank you. Just goes to show, there's no accounting for taste.
Apparently, a few years back, Elvis Costello got in a Taxi and asked to go to Chelsea, and the Taxi driver laughed manically..
I read this in a newspaper a while back..
I totally agree, It's the best hook of this tune!
Le Costello being as epic as he knows.
That's a late 70's thing, done it a few times back then. Very warped sensibilities the late 70's haha....

i play this single constantly, superb
I love everything about this song
The drums are amazing in this song!!
Listen to the drummer on watching the detectives, amazing session drummer unique part.
Oh that was a good one.
The bass player is insane
It's punk rock, mixed with a little ska and about three other things. Elvis Costello had a ton of great songs just like this between 1977 and about 1986.
You're awesome for saying so. Thanks.
Bada Bing! Good one.

see you in the Shed. Weren't that the home fans end in the 70's?
Pete Thomas really is one of the best rock drummers alive.
I just talked to the bass player, he said his bridge was set super low to get that "fuzz" buzz sound.
I was a born Chelsea . Cant get the gear market again. x
Yes. Yes it is.

I'm still pissed that my copy of This years model from 1978 does'nt have this song!

This is what Cesc Fabregas should have said!
Graham Parker?
Where is the intro to this song from? with the weird ritual going on lol
Is that a cast on Bruce's (bassist) playing hand???
They call her Natasha when she looks like Elsie. F%cking classic Elvis back when it counted!
Funny thing is you weren't wrong. Kudos.
Tourism in Chelsea has never been the same....
One team in Fulham!
that commented was posted 4 years ago
Yeah I know, but 4 years ago is kind of a stretch to be asking someone a question lol
Funny!
If you don't like it why are you here?
You asked that question on a One Direction video.
So why be a hypocrite?
Also, why are we typing like this?
all his music vids make him look really goofy, but his music is so kick ass.
do you think he was trying to make a point? or..he's actually that goofy lol
Yavar Durrani Ashley Cole as well.

What the hell was the first few seconds of the video? (Also, what was the song that accompanied those seconds?)

chelsea fans didn't want to go to chelsea back when this record was out
David Rocastle I did.
Around 1980 I was going out with a girl who thought that Elvis was seriously geeky and uncool. The stupid cow didn't realise that he was so beyond geeky he was ultra cool. I got a new GF.
@Andy NZ
Well done!
I don't want Van Persie to go to Manchester
this song is cool as fuck
Great song but always thought this was sung by fernando torres? lol
Apparently, Elvis thought the people who went to the clubs there were fake and pretentious.
And you were right. Nobody gives a rats arse about'em today... :
A John Hughes comedy starring Anthony Michael Hall.
