Frame rates and response time. For fighting games especially, just buying any display is not enough. You need to grab the ones that allow the button pressing to not lag. This is why games precision games like Guitar Hero/Rock Band had the screen calibration option for example.
It is an ASUS VH236H, the "EVO Monitor" as it has been dubbed. The trade off of HD video is input delay. This monitor has little to no input delay while still having HD video.
its because they play on special monitors designed to have little input lag, input lag is the delay between you pressing a button and the action showing up on screen, many commercial TVs have very bad input lag, specially big ones, thats why many have "gaming mode". for some info on that visit a website called "displaylag"
For that reason it's known as the "EVO Monitor". It's one of the displays from this generation close to the old CRT technology which has absolute zero input delay. Input delay under a frame is invisible to the human eye and abstract to the mind.
That's a Asus VH236H monitor. The monitor itself is 23 1/2" inches. But what makes it ideal for fighting games is it's extremely low input delay (Sub-Frame). Something that's very crucial when it comes to fighting games considering the strict timing of many things such as combos, 1-frame linkers, etc. In the end it doesn't matter how big or small the display is, it's about quality. The more big your display is, then the more likely it's gonna have big delay times.
No, it's due to input lag.. and in addition, they could of course play on a high quality plasma 80" TV, but how are you going to get as many as needed for this tourney? - This is just one of tens and tens of concurrent battles played at evo..
they are playing on an asus monitor. or known as the evo monitor. Its the only HD flatscreen that is 100% Lag free. the last Lag free TVs were CRTs. You'll see Asus monitors everywhere at major tournys. or CRTs
My only problem with EVO is that, when matches like this come along, they deserve the hype commentary. Where's yipes and chen or david or combofiend? I mean, these guys are OKAY, but we want more than just okay for the top 8
These monitors have the best response time so there is no delay between the buttons being pressed on the sticks and the actions being shown on the game. Gamers always use small screens like these to play games =)
Eric is correct. They play on a specific type of monitor that virtually eliminates framerate lag. The debate between PS3 and Xbox 360 still exists though...
I know you have a bunch of replies on this already but I would like to clarify. It is good to have a nice display but for the most part it's just lag. Fighting games especially need to run at a smooth and lag free framerate to play well on. UMvC3 runs at 60fps. Any lag from a TV could mean the difference between pulling off a frame perfect move or completely missing and losing a match.
That's actually a good question. I don't know why. I have a 65" tv and I wish I could play on a bigger screen. I guess space is so limited they have to keep the tv's small.
Most competitive gaming is played on a small screen. A bigger screen does not give any advantage over a smaller one but more than likely a disadvantage, the bigger the screen = more quality loss, smaller screens tend to have better frame rates and overall a better, sharper picture.
It's done to put your opponents in a situation that favors you. Like in this match, Wolverine could've beat Phoenix had Justin used the snap. It allows for massive chip, or to put massive pressure which could lead to your opponent to make a mistake, where you can capitalize.
Damage scales significantly less as the combo progresses and unless it's an infinite which wolverine is not specialized to do, it won't kill even with the super so a snap is a guarantee mix up for a damage reset and the opponent will have less meter buildup from taking lesser hits. Secondly, it's a lot easier to deal with a level 1 or level 2 dark phoenix rather than a level 3 with x-factor that will kill the entire team. Same goes with Virgil and other crazy level 3 characters.
it doesn't actually, framerate does not change with the size of the monitor. It changes with the resolution of the display device but that is only for pc. On console the framerate is always the same regardless of what you play it on. I hate playing this game on large screens, it affects my game. maybe its just preference for me and for them.
I used to hate him
Now I understand the character
Filipino Champ is such an amazing player
He's the second best of all time in this game imo after Justin
Fchamp is my favorite umvc player sharp movement and solid fundamentals and one of the best confirms
haha true but it does fit his villain role i must say
Mine is RayRay, RyanLv, Fchamp, ChrisG, Justin Wong, KBR. 😁
Still just as hype in 2022

2018?!
2021

input lag (not response time) is generally much lower on smaller monitors.
My only problem with EVO is that, when matches like this come along, they deserve the hype commentary. Where's yipes and chen or david or combofiend? I mean, these guys are OKAY, but we want more than just okay for the top 8
i think it has to do with the framerates, which can be significant in such a precise game
Thank you very much for the input. I appreciate it.

its because certain tv's lag on certain systems. with the asus (i believe it is) monitor they are using, there is no lag when playing
whats the point of doing a snap back if it cost meeter and you get the same mix up when their coming in from a char death

Noob question, how come they're playing on such a small screen (looks like a 27" inch?)
Fighting games were never played on a “big screen” ... fighting games are so different from every other game type.
Omfg the pressure of this fight is burning.
Where is the IRON FIST???
That answer makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

Damn that game 1 was like cray cray out of Mexico dancing party

How did he get cheated?
Smaller screen=easier to keep track of everything going on

Justin the father of video games!

Greatest run in Evo History
He respects Justin a LOT.

Go, Justin!
You're welcome. Anytime.
Say what you want about Fchamp but he’s a hell of a competitor and respects his opponents when he loses
i think this too, when playing on smaller screen i'm more skilled because of this factor
