Making Paper Micarta

- .. For knife liners and scales. End December I made a bunch paper micarta in different colours. I used paper, epoxy and a bit of acetone to thin it down. The micarta stock for liners is made with 2 to 4 layers of paper. The thicker micarta sheets for scales are made with 20 to 30 layers of paper. I used some old left over epoxy that is veeeery slow curing. It had to be thinned down a little bit because of the cold weather, this way it wets the paper a lot better. The different layers of paper micarta are separated with cling film and sandwiched between to MDF boards and lots of clamps. 24 hours later I cracked them apart and cleaned up the edges with a utility knife. This was easily done because the epoxy was still a little bit soft.
This was very easy to do, the same process works for fabric micarta like canvas micarta, blue jeans micarta,... possibilies are endless. This paper micarta came out nice and I'll be using it in a near future knife project.

It's refreshing to see one of these layup videos made without too much resin... So many of the maker channels with high viewer numbers are jumping on the resin train but without any prior experience or understanding of composites, so they often end up making what are really castings with fiber filler, rather than mechanical composites... Thanks for putting this out.
I started doing this because it beats constantly paying for liners and s&h, the color scheme is endless, it's easy to do. And you save money.
excellent video...thanks
very good job 👍👍
How well does Paper micarta hold up to moisture?
Interesting video. Why did you use plastic wrap between colours? Did you need any releasing agent between the wrap and the paper? Looking to making a rainbow pattern with about 5 sheets of each colour and wanted to do it all together without the seperation.
I wanted the colours to separate! The epoxy doesn't stick to the plastic wrap..I didn't use any release agent. Good luck!
Thanks
How do you keep your resin from drying so quick. I didn't even have enough time for 5 sheets before all my resin got hard. If I use less Hardner will that affect the final product?
I used a very slow setting epoxy, stays liquid for at least an hour. Don't use less hardener, it wont set up properly! Thanks for watching and good luck
Check out Liquid Diamonds epoxy. It is an example of a slow-set epoxy.
Excuse me, what the name of epoxy for use?
Which kind of paper did you use?
what type of paper do you use
Does it have to be pressed? Can youcoat something with it like papier mache?
if you want it to turn out good, and correct, it needs to be compressed
@@phantomgbeats1703would this work with an ordinary 2 parts epoxy syringe ? I only need a small piece for my project
You no talkie why not the info would be great
Not much info to give, just use paper or fabric, impregnate it with epoxy and press this flat while it cures. Thanks for watching.
Robin Coomans thanks for the reply but how do you polish the micarta when you use it
not the best way to cut a pdf board!!!!
Yeah, bt if it was a jpeg board??? or even better, a .exe board?
