"Reading jazz books" I hope that one day there's a 400 page book with nothing but scat noises (the vocal kind) for words 4 months to read "doo bee dada dee skiddly bap do waa" several ten thousand times
Maybe you can make the book. Sounds silly, but at the same time it'd be an interesting thing to practice. After reading just that, surely words will become much easier. Now, if you transpose a scat solo, you'll learn quite a bit. Or try some Indian vocal percussion. They do have standard syllables for it. It's hard, but can be very rewarding. Or just plain solfeggio practice. It's very useful and effective. I used to play trumpet for 6 years in school as a kid. Stopped in ´97. To this day I still remember most of the repertoire, memorised note by note solfeggio style. And I thought it was kinda fun that for other instruments in other keys, the syllables are different. But that sort of thing tends to be quite individual. Sing a catchy song in a language you don't know and that kind of quirky exercises will surely yield good results in the long run. Japanese stuff can be quite fun, even if you don't know a word of Japanese. They do have fantastic EVERYTHING in Western-styled music and it is just as good, just that everything is in Japanese.
Hey man, I quit playing guitar a year ago, because I played guitar for 5 years without motivation and joy. I wasn't progressing and I thought that I never could play the guitar properly, until this summer. I was bored and pickt up my squier and searched for some video's, and I saw some of your video's, and I played some chords, and I was finding joy in doing that! Now I am going back to guitar lessons to be better, because now I have fun in playing guitar, I progress a lot more than I ever thought! Thank you for getting my motivation and joy to play guitar back. Thanks a lot. Greeting from the Netherlands
@Mr. Meatballs I totally agree, when you write your own songs you feel so good with yourself, knowing that no-one else knows how to play your song yet.
I learn to improvise if you already can't. The same thing happened to me. I almost forgot that I ever played the guitar. But I found my guitar, and decided to try and improv, and I had a ton of fun. It's not work, and it's not really practice. And yet you get better. If you can combine that with real practice, you'll get really good.
Like anything in life, there is always a price to pay - if you want to be yourself, you will pay a price (but get something in return); if you do NOT want to be yourself, you'll pay a price to, and get something in return. Whoever you are, and whatever your choice will be, you will get something back (good or bad) and pay a price (high or low). There is no escaping this.
I'm really glad I watched this. I've been having doubts about pursuing my music degree and a career in the music industry, but hearing stories like this really inspire me to keep on.

Thank you for making this video, I studied jazz for 10+ years just because I think I should. I was long forgotten how I first introduced to music and how I fell in love with it. I really enjoy the life stories you bring to the table my man! I appreciate the truthful words all the time. Really glad to see you pull through to continue making and pursuing music. You rock my man!
Walking through a dark forest with no map and no flashlight... That's exactly how I've been feeling since the day I realized I had no clue about what type of musician I wanted to become. However, trying to go back doesn't even seem like an option. It's like I can't see myself doing anything that's not related to music in some way. I keep venturing deeper and deeper into the darkness, because I have nothing better to do anyway!
I haven't picked up a guitar in three years.... I was in a band that turned into "work"(as in I didn't look forward to practice and would leave shows as soon as the set was over) and suffered an injury that made it extremely painful to play. After 30 years of playing I simply walked away from it and have no motivation to pick it back up. It sucks... I can't even listen to music any more....
You know what? That's ok. Maybe you will come back to music; maybe you won't. Try and get the most out if life, whatever you do next. I'll be thinking of you.
Wodans Krieger at one time I played 17 instruments proficiently... But they all require the use of my right hand which has been pretty much lost due to injury.... Physical therapy and a series of cortisone shots had given me the ability to play trumpet again, but a stringed instrument is out of the question for a while. It just sucks... Because playing guitar was such a HUGE part of who I was for over three decades. It will come back one day... Baby steps and such
Han reality. Thanks for the kind words. And you know what.. you are right, life is what we make of it and hopefully I can get back to "the shred shed" one day. At the end if the day I just want to be a better person than I was yesterday.
Thanks for sharing your story. At the moment, my struggle is dealing with the business and social side of things. I hate managing disorganized people, misplacing trust in undependable people, helping people but never having it reciprocated, etc. I'm really starting to burn out.
There's no reason to stop playing because it's not important enough to quit. If you were a neurosurgeon and always messed up, then you would have job important enough to quit. Think about it. You can always keep playing because the consequences of being bad won't kill anyone.
It’s interesting to watch this video. I wanted to follow a musician career and at the time my family convinced me to follow a different path to make some money and buy all the gear I wanted. I went to Law School and I finished it. At the end I hated working with law so much I had to drop everything and started a new career in Software Engineering and never looked back. Today I’m a bit frustrated I haven’t learned the much I wanted playing guitars and I don’t have the same time to practice I’ve had before. I have my gears - they are pretty decent for what I play - but adding anything new to my collection involves explaining my passion to my family. I’m glad you found a successful path in music. I ended up finding something I love to do but the frustration with guitars remains.
I've been waiting everyday for a new vid, found out about you a week or two ago you're one of the best youtubers ever. Great vid like always, you should do more covers you're an amazing guitarist
Sweet and inspiring ! I took the exact opposite side : I hit a wall too many times and I gave up. So that was interesting to hear how it worked for someone successful !
The most inspiring musicians that I have become aware of lately are UA-cam channels, and you are one of them! Also Adam Neely, Bill Wurtz, and Rick Beato. So, do you actually pay the bills through Patreon? Have you already made a video on that? Or do you also do something else on the side to make money? Just curious...
Bywater Labs idk if this will 100% answer your question, but he did make a video on ways guitarists can make money: ua-cam.com/video/pEyZjnAxQac/v-deo.html
I’m sure he gives lessons . With his skill set he could work 3-4 hours a day giving lessons and then doing UA-cam. Combined, I think he’s probably comfortable. Probably pursues other interests that could potentially provide monetary gain as well. Beats the hell out of “the grind”.
I actually did put down my guitar and decide to pursue something else entirely when I graduated high school in 2014. It did NOT work out and now I'm trying to get a foothold in the local music scene, which isn't always easy in a small town like mine.
I dont know what to do with my life. I love music so much. But i don't know what to do. I dont want to let anyone down, or myself. I really want to be a session guitarist if I can and earn a good pay, but I have a feeling that wont be a reality as that thing is slowly dying out and i dont even know if it pays well in the UK. I'm just lost. Im still really young. But I kinda have no sense of direction when I finish school. It's just bumming me out, hopefully something will come in these next few years because for now I'm just gonna keep on practicing the hell out of guitar and doing what I love because I might not have this again.

Right now I'm about to start college (digital art & animation) and it's not what I wanted, I wanted to study music but it's not possible, there's no music school in my town and it's impossible for me to move so I'm stuck with this. And I've been making my own music for a while now, first year was full of awful content but rn I think it's pretty ok, but as time goes on I feel like it's not worth doing anything, I love it but it makes me feel empty at the same time, I have no "real" motivation and I just record every once in a while, I have a bunch of songs written with music and all but I just can't bring myself to work on them, it's weird... And art doesn't pay very well so I don't know what's gonna happen with my life lol. Love your channel Samurai, keep up the good work
You should spend some serious time weighing the two options, but I would personally go for the aeronautical engineering PhD (if you think you have what it takes) and keep guitar as a hobby you have a lot of passion for.
Go into the engineering and on the side build up your guitar career. If the guitar career takes off, you can always switch careers. You could also do guitar right out the bat, but that's more risky.
Hey! I am going into grade 12 next year and some of my older friends are going to Humber for Jazz studies and I am also considering Humber for doing audio engineering. I'm just curious on what you think of their program/ what their facilities are like since I've never been there and I don't know anyone who has gone there
I don't know if it's better or worse not to have any hope for a proper "career" in music (I lack the age, the energy and the demographics for that). Hitting walls all the time and getting into every possible musical rut is not fun, but the slighest possibility of becoming satisfied with my music keeps me going.
Holy shit, dude! Been watching your videos for a couple years now, off and on; just recently a lot more. Law school = plot twist. If you ever get a chance you should start a band with Lock Picking Lawyer. Dude's a "Renaissance Man" so I'd be willing to bet he can play an instrument. ✌💗🤘
i quit gigging a couple years ago, when my son turned 1 year old, (after playing almost every weekend for 10 years),,,, I never stopped playing,, now I play one to four gigs a year...best thing i ever did !!!
I stopped playing music for about a year and became infatuated with the idea of becoming a stockbroker. Oh how I would want to hang myself by the necktie I would have to wear everyday if I didn’t get back into music. I’m still a finance major in college but I see it as more of something to fall back on if I never make a living off music + personal finance skills.
Jazz guitarists have to truly love playing jazz and eating bologna sandwiches because there’s no money in it. Other jazz musicians are the ones who go to listen and they’re broke too.
This is the first video I've seen of yours. 14,000 views... are you saying you've made it and reached your goal? I don't get your point. Are you going to give up or keep trying? What's your new goal if you aren't giving up? Best of luck.
40+ hours of law in a week... you'd be doubling that seriously in study and when you eventually article and get in the profession. Sounds like you are on the right path, keep on the journey.
I love your stories and videos! There is just one thing that I feel that could be improved. It feels like everything you say is very scripted and not really spoken from the heart.
Well you could have gone into contract law and helped musicians sign smarter deals. They wouldn't be able to pay you but you would combine your music career with a legal career. Not much difference between a struggling lawyer and a struggling muscian. =)
I sue people's pants off and I can tell you it is not gratifying or money-wise interesting. At least you kept your soul and can sleep at night with a clean conscious. Why people hate lawyers so much?
A degree in music performance = time to learn jazz. If there was ever a simple description of the disconnect between academia and reality, there it is. I work in academia, I believe in education, but come on - "our students will become great jazz performers." As if that is the only contemporary style that is passable. I'm sure Beyonce, Drake, and Angus Young are crushing it with their jazz skills. Wasting student's time, effort, and money like that is inexcusable.

I play guitar and I want that to be my career but I also really like aeronautical engineering and I want to get a PhD in it, what do I do?
Its easier to become an aeronautical engineer than a guitarist to be honest
You should spend some serious time weighing the two options, but I would personally go for the aeronautical engineering PhD (if you think you have what it takes) and keep guitar as a hobby you have a lot of passion for.
Go into the engineering and on the side build up your guitar career. If the guitar career takes off, you can always switch careers. You could also do guitar right out the bat, but that's more risky.
Get your degree, then pursue your music career. If it doesn’t work, hey, you have a valuable degree. And you could still enjoy playing music.
Hey! I am going into grade 12 next year and some of my older friends are going to Humber for Jazz studies and I am also considering Humber for doing audio engineering. I'm just curious on what you think of their program/ what their facilities are like since I've never been there and I don't know anyone who has gone there
Heh. Not sure about Jazz Books, but Jazz Mags have been keeping students entertained in the UK for many years......🙄
I don't know if it's better or worse not to have any hope for a proper "career" in music (I lack the age, the energy and the demographics for that).
✌💗🤘
i quit gigging a couple years ago, when my son turned 1 year old, (after playing almost every weekend for 10 years),,,, I never stopped playing,, now I play one to four gigs a year...best thing i ever did !!!
still have no idea how you dont have more subs man.
my man!
I feel you bro.
It sound super rough I don't know if this video truly inspired me to get better 0.0
Best of luck.
liked and subscribed ..
I'm 16 and looking to go in to music. TBH, being a music teacher ain't that bad.
I'm so glad you didn't quit..
40+ hours of law in a week... you'd be doubling that seriously in study and when you eventually article and get in the profession. Sounds like you are on the right path, keep on the journey.
I think about quitting music every day, but I don't
same man
Aaaaaaall the........ Smaaaall things....
Did you graduate?
I feel like If I don’t have like an existencial crisis per month I’m not doing it right :P
It’s actually sad tho
Huh. I've been playing for a year longer than you. And you completely blow me away.
164 views and only 21 upvotes? Get out.
Also, thanks for the story, Steve.
If you only almost quit music one time, you're doing better than me -__-
I love your stories and videos!

So, you like my solos?
Yeah :)
A profoundly musical person with already having a grab on an instrument (any instrument) won't quit, ever. Fact.
msumungo na man I quit percussion and I was playing live gigs when I was 12, it was a natural talent but it gets very boring and its a dying industry
My partner's just graduated from Essex uni with a 2.1 in law.
It's. So. Fucking. Boring.
Dude forget UA-cam go write songs in Nashville
Would have been miserable as an attorney.
