They are starting to shift their policies now to become more left than the liberals and its starting to attract people with more extreme views as well. Jagmeet within the party actually has the highest approval rating amongst all leaders. I tend to vote more right but I am not a fan of Peter O'Toole by any means, just the same old same old which is very disappointing.
Jack Layton is quoted to have requested to completely shut down the tarsands of which eastern provinces were relying on for "equalization payments". Jack Layton is on record requesting to "be more like Greece, because they're doing some great things" prior to their economic collapse. The NDP now has successfully got the Liberals to ban handguns.... in the exact same way Venezuela did prior to the event of elections still taking place but... "not really". So if you take the blackface/SNC-Lavalin scandal as of late if you think Canada is capable of holding legit elections anymore... I would say that you're delusional. Here we have Trudeau propped up by none other than the NDP freezing the bank accounts of peaceful protestors like they do in actual dictatorships. Locking non-violent protesters and denying them bail while allowing violent offenders like murderers to get bail. This is the NDP you "respect". Accept that for what it is.

The one thing I will never forget (or forgive him for) was when a Catholic member of the NDP from Manitoba based on her religious beliefs wouldn't support gay marriage. Instead of respecting her faith, Layton said if she didn't support gay marriage she would be expelled from the caucus. Unbelievable. He should have been censored or even forced to apologize for this. Layton was in politics for one reason and one reason ONLY--to feed his enormous ego. I found it ironic that when he got to the highest point of his political career (by essentially promising everything to everyone) he was stricken with cancer. And even then when he could have done a public service by telling what he was suffering from (which Alex Trebek shared when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and as he said saved many lives because many people then went for early screening) Layton said he didn't want to discourage people with the same cancer. Absolute baloney---likelihood he was hiding what he had--as to why who knows.
I'm still not old enough to vote, but I have for a while been interested in politics and this year, I was so happy to see what amazing success this man brought to the NDP. Jack really was an inspiration to young people and he seemed like such a kind, intelligent person. I'm very that he was from Montreal, my city. He was very brave, and he will be missed by many.
Jack Layton was without a doubt the best politician Canada has had in a long time. His character, patriotism, and optimistic spirit has inspired many including myself to not live everyday life in a selfish manner, but to strive to achieve a better Canada, one of equality, one with better environmental policies, one that does what is right and not just for financial gains. True. Unlike a lot of politicians, Jack Layton was actually passionate about these issues his whole life not just when he entered federal politics at age 52. He was a city councillor, and as a professor he did many op-eds on issues like housing, the aids epidemic, clean water, and city garbage. In contrast Tom Mulcair was a career politician for 34 years and was involved in a lot of the political fights.

What a truly inspiring man! This guy is what motivated me to vote last election and I'm so glad to say that I voted NDP. It is so unfortunate that Canada has lost such an incredible leader who would've been the best prime minister our country has ever seen. I'm an American very envious of the Canadian political system when I see Jack Layton. This man being on this big TV show is the equivalent of Dennis Kucinich or Ralph Nader being on Meet The Press (in your dreams!).
I never met Jack but he was a very sincere man that has done a lot for this country then the previous one we got but he simply brought back our values this country hasn't had in a long time.
I may not have agreed with all of his political views, but I would have voted for this guy in the last election because he was one of the few politicians who was a true genuine Canadian, and I'm a Conservative who didn't vote in '15
I live in Edmonton- Stathcona. I put in a vote that put Linda Duncan in office. When people say it cannot be done Layton showed it could. I will miss him very dearly. All we can do now is honour his memory by getting out there and become a part of politics.

I was out in Edmonton earlier this year when the provincial election was on, and NDP did pick up two more provincial seats there putting them at four. So who says it can't be done in Alberta?

Jack Layton has multiple University degrees, has written books, lead a political party to gains in elections, and seen success in creating legislation that has worked for Canadians, much more than the trolls I can see here bickering about "Conservative" and "Socialist."
Although I am philosophically opposed to NDP principles, I really hoped Jack Layton would oust the Liberals as the official opposition leader, because he genuinely earned my respect as a passionate and involved leader who would work hard every day and make Stephen Harper a much better PM. Although he never got a chance to live the dream he worked so hard for, he left a legacy to live up to, he probably died happy, still on the high of such a great victory, and surrounded by family.
So many of the youth voters are voting NDP, for both platform and for the candidate. I myself am a 23 year old who is voting for the first time, and voting NDP, as well as many of my friends all same age group first time votes. Harper is not the way to go, NDP is.
I know he's far behind in the number of seats when compared to the liberals and conservatives, but I will keep voting until we get a true leader like Jack Layton to run this country!

@noobler9 A huge difference is there economic policies. Layton believes in increased taxes and more regulations while Paul believes in lower taxes and deregulation. In other words, Paul is a social liberal and a fiscal conservative.

Provincial parties are completely different than federal. In the world we live in today we need an NDP government to create jobs, fund health/education and strengthen our economy in the true way. Not by giving tax cuts to major companies that are in the profits massively.
NDP was in Saskatchewan for years and that economy stagnated with little to no growth with a change in government they are now flourishing with new jobs and businesses investing in everything in that province, is it just a coincidence I think not.
Why NDP? because it seems to be the only party that questions the actions that cause the problems and not only the solution to the problems. Jack Layton would have made a great prime minister, one to be remembered in the history books. Instead, were left with the puppet Stephen Harper and his party of consumerists. Really wish Jack Layton was still around to fight for what is best for the people. RIP

i live in alberta and the problem is that everyone thinks if they dont vote conservative there gonna lose there jobs in the patch, they think if u raise corporate taxes the big companies will leave,
