- This harmonica lesson will show you how to play the intro and first verse of She Caught The Katy by Taj Mahal. You will need a harmonica in the key of Eb and we are playing in 2nd position in the key of Bb.
This is an excellent example of call and response between a harmonica and vocalist.

Please do a lesson on the solo. It's one of my favorite harp solos out there. I find your lessons really helpful!
Taj is my favorite ever! I have tried to do this song but never got it figured out. Once again, the best harp teacher on the planet came through!
This is my favorite Taj song! Great lesson Tomlin, you are a gifted instructor. I really appreciate all the work in our behalf.
Taj is one of my all-time favorite bluesmen and this along with Leaving Trunk and Celebrated Walking Blues are my favorite Taj Tunes. So, yes, PLEASE continue on with this lesson!
This is an excellent song and great lesson. Wow, it is simply awesome!
Getting that 3d" after that 2d is a beast
Fantastic lesson! Thank you for uploading these videos. I've come a long way because of your lessons. I would absolutely love to have a lesson on the rest of the tune. Also, as mentioned by several other people it would be super great if you could do a lesson on leavin trunk. That's one of the songs that got me interested in playing the harmonica in the first place and I can't seem to figure it out. Thanks for all your work.
Totally awesome instrumental AND vocal performance ;-D Incredible! Most enjoyable ;-)
Great lesson and great song. I had our band playing this for a while, but we dropped it for some reason. It has such a terrific bluesy feel.
Thanks for the lesson. Taj Mahal is so great
Favorite addition yet! More Taj please, Tomlin. Leavin Trunk, Cuckoo, Loving in my Baby's Eyes are harp essentials.
Haven't got into this yet, but really wanted to add a vote for this "in between the singing" type lesson rather than just the melody. Lots more in future please! Maybe with a few imrov hints ... :)
great.....I love this song
Thanks Tomlin. Such a great song! Taj uses some great ideas. For example, I love how effective his sparing use of the tonque slap is. I'd love the whole lesson. And respectfully to the post below I play a number of tunes on an Eb harp in 2nd. I appreciate being able to add Katy.
Thank you so much for the lesson, tab en backing track SUPER!!!
Love this. I had tried to tab this on my own and after a million players came close on the intro, but no further. Would love a lesson on the rest of the tune. Also, Taj’s Leaving Trunk has a great harp line that I’d suggest for a lesson, also in Bb.
Thanks for that Tomlin. I was always a little off on that one, especially the fills.
And yes, give a lesson on the solo.
Sounds great mate !
Please, please do the rest of the song in another lesson. I play with an old-guy beginner blues group and the harmonica/singer call-and-response focus means that we can get through the whole song without relying on the rest of the instruments to memorize stuff. Important for us - that's the way it is. Besides, this is my favorite song and I bought an Eb harmonica just for it months ago. Easy to change key of the lesson using software, however. Love the implicit reference to Caledonia in later verses. Caledonia, the most interesting blues love fixation. And, plenty of reference to trains too, although "Katy" and "mule" are lost on most and the song means a lot less to many listeners without the white suburban translation. Most first time listeners among my friends seem to fear that "Katy" is some kind of venereal disease, and who knows how they connect that to riding on a mule. Been hauled around by their soccer mom too much - the train culture is long gone..
How could I've missed this one. You sound good mate.
Awesome Tomlin...Thank you
Pretty good. Nice play, nice sing, now i need a Eb harp.
nice one man! i am fairly new to your vids, first time i have heard you sing. you have a great voice too! don't we all have the same accent when we sing the blues? hell yeah!
Awesome. Please continue with the rest of the tune.
Excellent tomlin thank you .
Very cool to listen to............
Didn’t know you could sing. Very nice!
Thank you , Tomlin.
Please more lessons on this tune! Thank you!
Hey Tom, great lesson! one thing , try a 3blow 6 blow octave for that first note. I think that's what Taj does.
Thanks Tomlin good lesson
Yes - do the rest of the tune please
Love it! Any advice for the harp solo? It sounds pretty much like a repetitive riff.
Sweet country sounds
Gr8, as usual, Tomlin! What level is this one?
I love the Klimpt print (and Taj).
Excellent Mark - Klimpt and Taj are great :-)
Yes! I love this! I only have this harp to blue along to the blues brother version, but this is one of my favourite harp keys.
I’ve not Ickes my harps up for maybe 9 months and can’t get a good bend on 3 then play 3 straight after! 😢 learnt my lesson though.... more harp!
🤘🏻🤘🏻 love the tutorial selection recently though man 🤙🏻😁😁
Get back on that harp! :-)
Tomlin Leckie I’m back! I’ve got it back..... it’s sketch but it’s coming
Mr. Leckie,
I was wondering if you could break down the harp for Leaving Trunk by Taj Mahal. That's one that I've been trying to figure out. Love that song.
Thanks from South Texas!
Joe Garza
So much yes on this!
Tomlin, it would be great to learn the rest of this tune. Thank you!
could you do more Beatles songs for beginners?
супер!
Where can we get the whole song?
Why does this Tab differ from Liam word which one is correct
Can you recommend a tuner app to see if I’m getting my bends right?
Mark Desrosiers Bendometer is what I use! Also Harpninja is good, but a bit more expensive.
I you have a smartphone (I use an android) "Harmonica Tuner" is just like Bendometer but free for the stuff you need, and harmonica oriented. Actually, the phone app PitchLab Lite is far better for checking bends (or finding note identity and lengths and checking for vibrato and slurs and half-bends and tuning etc for harmonica or any instrument.) if you use the right function (multicolored continuously scrolling full sized screen this may be called the spectrometer function but I'm not sure - just swipe left or right - it has all note values listed on the left ). This is also free for android but a year ago or so you had to pay a dollar extra for that particular spectrometer function for an apple phone. These two phone apps are far better or music analysis than any computer app I've found. If PitchLab had a way to save the results for an entire song or lick, it would be a phenomenal app for figuring out a song.
Ok thanks guys
I dont suppose you know the harmoica key for the Taj Mahal Jack of Dimonds?
I just wish it wasn't in Bb because who has an Eb harmonica? We move it down one half step to D so we can use an A harmonica. Awesome guitar song for beginners and harmonica players alike! Beginner harmonica players can skip the licks and just play chords just fine.
Get the free program audacity and you can import audio clips or video sound and change key easily
But, if the song is in D, don't we use a G harmonica to play in 2nd position? And if the song is in E, we use an A harmonica? And from Bb to D you need to move up 2 whole steps. Or am I wrong?
Yes, correct on harmonica use in each key. Change to Key of D is 4 steps and to E 6 steps - too squeaky on backing track but fine on harmonica in my opinion. Change of Key to A is half step and use a D harmonica - fine on squeakiness of the backing track. Vocalists and other instruments may have different opinions. This song has prominent horn parts in most renditions and probably these are easiest in Bb since the horns are probably Bb horns. I suspect this is why an Eb harmonica is a good idea.
Yep on all. 2 whole steps from Bb to D. From an Eb harmonica to a G harmonica, also 2 whole steps.
Isn't it caddie, as in Cadillac?
I don't think so. From what I read, the "Katy" refers to the Kansas/Arkansas/Texas railroad - she's catching a train.
Why did I know this guy was going to sing?
