Mountain Thunder's Final Bow: Western Maryland 734 Photo Charter 2016

- For nearly 25 years, Western Maryland steam locomotive #734 captivated both the general public and railfans alike as it charged the former WM mainline from Cumberland to Frostburg every year; carrying the titles as flagship, star, pride and joy of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Sadly, nothing can last forever as 734 is slated to be taken out of service for its 15 years (1472 Days) mandated inspection this year. With this process requiring plenty of time and resources, plus the Chesapeake & Ohio "Mallet" #1309's return to steam in sight, for how long until Mountain Thunder graces the rails once again remains a mystery.
Because of this, Pete Lerro of Lerro Photography was able to host one last photo charter on February 17, 2016. In this video you'll get runbys, caboose and cab rides as the period freight train thunders up the mountain on a mixed cloudy and sunny day. It was truly a sight to behold as Mountain Thunder takes her final bow.

My god that whistle is SPECTACULAR. And the stack talk and the snow covered environment makes it better. Great video!!
the current whistel is amazing but have you heared the one from around 2013 i prefer that one a little more
Awesome video! That was a very fun day, glad I was able to see 734 for the first and probably last time.
+Cape Rails Productions Thank you very much for the feedback. It was indeed a fun day and personally, I'm too extremely happy to finally get the chance to visit WMSR and see 734 for the first and probably last time as well (It was no doubt on my bucket list).
Luke I.
They plan to rebuild its boiler, so it shouldn't be the last time you can see it in operation.
Outstanding video and audio! Please keep them coming!
+Toledo1940 Thank you very much for the feedback and have a good day.
734 just got put in for boiler work, and should be coming back to service soon, alongside 1309, I hope that when they do bring her back they give her the Hancock 3 she wore for so long, that fit her well in my opinion
hopefully see you guys this summer for 2016😄,looking forward already.
+Mark Cinque Thank you very much for the feedback. We do hope you have a good time as the WMSR is a true gem. Have a good day.
You are most welcome and it's my most favorite train ride in the U.S.A.😄😄.
Truly a beautiful engine, very nice video!
+Rece Kasten Thank you very much for the feedback and have a good day.
Thank you for sharing.
+JacksonAndLansing Railroad Thank you very much for the feedback and have a good day.
Mighty fine video!
I know this video was uploaded 3 years ago. But that’s an amazing sounding whistle 734 blew before exiting service. I hope 1309 blows this whistle when she enters service. What a shrilling sound.
Wow, just wow! Pity I won't be able to see her running anytime soon. BTW, what whistle is she wearing?
Her Whistle on this trip is said to be a Illinois Central 3 chime.
Im more of a fan of the Hancock 3 Chime they used on her for years. That voice suits ole Mountain Thunder the best.
That Hancock 3 was what gave her a voice all her own
Hearing that just screamed mountain thunder, just like how the NP 3 chime 4449 wore for so long screamed 4449
Excelente video, me suscribo a tu canal, un saludo desde Spain.
Thank you very much for the feedback and have a good day.
If it's going to be in storage for about 15 years, wouldn't it need to be restored into running condition agian?
WHATS THAT WHISTLE?!?! I've swear I've heard it on Grand Canyon Railroad #29 or #4960 before...
TrainMan5632 southern Pacific 5 Chime. It sorta sounds like a Chinese 5 Chime though.
@@MPT_Productions It's a Western Maryland 5 Chime
So it’s been two years. Is she back?
The Angry Irishman No, but the new and larger 2-6-6-2 is going to run now. It has undergone a couple steam tests now.
1630Is TheBestTrain when will she be back?
Nobody is really sure. Funds ran out for a while whilst restoring 1309, so it will be a while. But, one day in the future, mountain thunder will return.
Does anyone know how 734 got nicknamed mountain thunder?
2:45 Just listen
Too bad the photographer didn't understand that the engine, rather than cars in the consist, is the star of the show. There is more time given to scenic footage and rail cars that of the engine. He didn't follow the engine around curves or along the trackage. That is a great show of the train sucking the smoke & steam out of the tunnel.
Is 1309 being restore to operational service or is it a cosmetic restoration?
Operation... I think.
Where is going to run? There is no way she can run at the WMSR.
ShadowSteel18 You'd have to ask em.
+ShadowSteel18 It'll run on the WSMR. I thought it was crazy at first but apparently the turntable is just long enough to accommodate the engine.
That is incredible! So do they plan to run it while 734 is undergoing its inspection? That is going to be so cool!
is this 734's last photo shoot or its final run ever before its rebuild?
Well, I'm not sure if it's 734's last photo shoot, but I think this might've been it's last trip to Frostburg. Apparently there was a landslide along the route, probably in March, and 734 couldn't make it back to Frostburg again.
How did you get that shot at 2:50-4:00?
[sob] I want WM 734 to return to service very soon.
Not going to happen.
+JacksonAndLansing Railroad :(
stampycatfan01 Maybe in a few years.
:)
Boy, those rails are in poor condition. That engine and the following consist is rocking around the bend.
