As someone who used to play zerg back in heart of the swarm, I was always really confused why MM terrans would float 1500 gas and not build ravens against me. Every time they did build ravens I generally lost. Just...detection all the time without scanning, and the spells are decent. If building a raven causes the Terran to do one less scan and get one more mule when they're on a mineral-heavy army, that sounds like a good trade to me. Anti-armour missile also seems custom-built for marines. I mean, yes, I know: there's practical reasons why MM Terrans don't build ravens in shorter games (need a starport with a techlab, but medivacs want a starport with a reactor). But in long games? Why not?
@@KaitlynBurnellMath i kinda miss the heat seeking missile spell. Byun & Maru would target their own medivac & boost it into zerg & protoss deathballs and then blizzard removed the ability :(
Finally, Ravens! That is more than fair. So many scans just for containing creep spread or hunting observers, that is not the spirit of the challenge, in my book. And the auto-turret is a robot-guy with a machine gun, so basically a Marine :)
Base trade to GM: Never fight head on, wait until opponents leave their base to base trade. Every unit to GM: You have to sit back until you finish making every Terran unit. Then you can go attacking. The micro will be insane.
Honestly, in that game vs. Mills at the point when you got his CC, if you just pulled back and destroyed everything outside the range of the tank on the low ground instead of going for the tank, it seems like you should be able to beat him; that's tons of extra damage and supply block for ages and denial of his natural for a while.
Wow! Game 1 TvZ was amazing. Yes to Ravens for vision and anti armor if ultras are on route. That was probably one of the most intense games I've watched you play, let alone win. Sti watching the rest and had to drop a line on this. Well done!
Conditional exceptions make sense in GM MMR In my opinion. Like you are allowed to make up to 2 ravens at a time only if you confirmed your opponent is doing specific things such as Ultras or other capped number of units when the main build just can't really stop the opponents build without help (but like say tanks are only defensive). No "free losses".
Upgrades add 10% (min 1). So if your unit deals less than 10 damage per shot upgrades are extra effective. Marines deal 6 which marines +3 marines deal 9 - 50% better! Interceptors and BCs vs air deal 5 so upgrades are even better for them. BC vs ground is the same as marine. Queens, reapers, high Templar and broodlings deal 4 so they are the units most affected by upgrades.
That fight with the low ground tanks at your main at ~35:30, if you're alphastar you can pull just a few SCVs from your third to flank the tanks from the low ground to draw thier attacks, which is technically doable by humans if you have the time to slowly analyze the situation and come up with the strategy, or if you remember the strategy for the next time. With that you will probably have enough marines left over to hold the rest of the marines later on, it was super close after all.
To elaborate more on the brightness, I find the GSL cast videos to have much higher gamma and less contrast, especially in the shadows which make the content much more readable and pleasant to watch.
thermy would you consider turning the upgrade notifications on which appear on the left? You maybe was asked this before and maybe you find the notifications annoying, but as viewer it's nice to see the combat shield and stim notifications pop up and how you time them.
I think anything that improves the Marines damage, you should do, the Raven´s anti-armor missile is a good way to see way Marines can do, against heavy armored enemies :)
if you have a rematch and are concerned they would know how you are (despite you having changed your pic) you could drastically change your glhf pattern, because it's very recognizable in its uniformity. So be the first one to write it and alter it in other ways.
honestly, i think making a unit or two just to prevent the free loss is fine. like the Raven so you dont need to mass scan as much, or like if a Tank in the base stopped you from losing to a cheese or something. i get wanting to see if you can win solely my marine/medivac (or whatever challenge), but if a unit or two prevents a loss, but doesnt contribute really to the win, then i think its acceptable. Basically, if the unit comp is what wins the game, then a few supporting units here and there should be acceptable.
If you want to add ravens (detection should be allowed), you'd probably be better off if you make the decision before the next game so you can make up your mind what spells are allowed and mentally prepare yourself not to use autoturrets and/or scramble if you decide against that too. Would still much rather you went for it right from the start though, you'd probably be able to go much further with marine medivac + raven if you had more practice with it.
yep lost 2 medivacs and 20 marines and didnt even kill the tank. could have easily killed 400 minerals worth of supply depots instead. Sometimes i think the "good trade" is reserved for unit trades which makes no sense to me. right after that forgg exploited his lack of vikings and used the raven to harass him and occupied him for like 60 seconds with auto turrets. that was huge because it gave forgg so much time to recover. i think a viking should be allowed if opponents are leaving spell casters next to minerals (i wouldnt be surprised if forgg knows hes not allowed to build vikings)
Vocab lesson of the day: when you have 1:1 ratio of Medivacs to Marines, its called a "cloud of medivacs" lol. Also, if you are splitting Marines more than using them in a deathball, its called "splitties". Lol. Amazing game, well done
Challenge Idea: Defense challenge. Win the game by turtleing up. Don't attack or harrass at all, just expand bases and try to absorb all of the map by just slowly expanding your defensive structures and units without attacking. Granted, this could take a while so you could end it in a few ways, maybe just turtle until like minute 10 or 15 or something, or until you have half the map, or until he is starve out.
awesome content as always . moving forward would totally be ok with you adding ravens or libs to break siege lines or deal with colossus . also defensive tank on each base seems ok with me . keep up the good stuff, big fan.
Should have slight edits to rules like ravens as the series progresses, QOL and better chances at the higher level, as long as the overall theme is the same; reaper start, a couple of tanks, couple of ravens, a few ghosts, use them as hero units sparingly but impactfully and it will be much more interesting especially against the highest rated players Maybe you can have primary units and then use other units as a one time "active" (as opposed to passive). if cool ideas pop up, the viewers will probably forgive you for making those creative impactful plays
I really enjoy the challenge series :) Is there anything you've learned from challenges that you think is unknown or obscure in the current pro-players meta?
10 marines healed by 100 medevacs killing a late game GM zerg is basically the best thing I've seen in Starcraft ever, and I've been playing and watching this game for almost a decade.
If you let yourself use an enhanced version with even just a couple of ravens I think you'd could probably get to top 16, being able to put a couple of tanks into timeout or anit- armour missle would be pretty helpful
Doesn’t it sadden you a little bit that you can almost top ladders with fun strategies and constraining yourself? Feels like there’s not much competition anymore these days
Hey Marc, is there any trick for when you have a bunch of marines or SCVs selected but you only want a few of them to go somewhere. I see you do it often when you select a big group of SCVs and somehow only 3 goto the gas or in this you had a group of marines selected but only 4 went to the bunker. Thermal I have a very important question. Is there any option to choose only Medi that do have units inside? I'm not sure if you are clicking so fast or there is any keybind to that but it's actually really stunning to see that, also you are not wasting medis that are not fully loaded. I would say using a raven or 2 for support or detection is totally fine for this challenge
Especially this deep into the challenge.
The anti-armor missile would be cool too.
For sure. We can consider this phase 2 of the challenge.
the raven just adds to the theme with anti armor making marines even stronger
agreed here
Absolutely LOVE the addition of ravens to this challenge, especially since you always have lots of gas and are trying to hit top 16.
def love the high lvl play. Can't believe those ravens + micro won him the game!

ravens should be allowed in every challenge. juts like medivac
Loved the zerg fight that was incredible
+1 for Ravens. Personally think minus auto-turrets, they're support units like medivac's and are 'legal' for any challenge.
Pure marine vs ultra, bane and infestors... Hold my hand Marc, i'm scared!
