I can understand this video wanted to focus on the eating disorder, but I still feel it's incomplete, without showing how Allie Ostrander has become an expert in recovery, cooking, training methods and social life and how she fought for all that. Why didn't you want to show, how there can be light at the end of the tunnel? I can only recommend her own channel on youtube. It is very educational and motivating. Even I started moving and doing more things and that says something! Hats off to Allie!

I suppose its simply not possible to cover everything in depth in just 13 minutes

Yep I respect her cause she got the help and recovered. Most end up quitting the sport and it happens to be men as well. Chris Solinsky, Alan Webb, German Fernandez...careers ended due to dietary changes and probable eating disorders. One thing that doesn't get mentioned too often is that certain minerals and vitamins takes months to replenish even for those not working out. Runners with severe eating disorders need to stop exercising to recover.

I watched Allie and looked up to her in high school as a cross country runner. I wanted to run in college and be a professional athlete but developed an eating disorder which completely burnt me out physically and mentally. To this day I am still recovering my self-worth and self-love so it means so much now to see her standing up and speaking out, let alone taking the steps to take care of herself. So much respect and love ❤

It takes courage to come forward, especially as an accompished and professional athlete, and confront an eating disorder. I have always admired Allie O for her frankness and leadership in this regard. Hopefully, her example will help other athletes who struggle with eating disorders.

What a huge hurdle you had to make and a necessary one at that. You just keep on pressing forward because I know from watching you run that your heart is totally in to running 🏃‍♀️ that being said I think you could be breaking records and going to the next Olympics …. I’ll be rooting for you all the way . Hugs Ken😊

The next step is teaching people how to fuel. How to manage their weight. How to get proper nutrition. Nick Symmonds has addressed this pretty well.

This video is a classic example of sickness media, rather than health media. Half the video should be about the sickness, half should be about success and methods on the other side.

I think no matter if you have an ED or not her words will hit any female runner right in the gut. We all have heard how smaller and lighter is faster and on some level it’s hurt all of us. Thanks for speaking out.

My freshman athlete has this and as his mom, I am frightened that I can't see into his mind. I am blind as to how to help him. He is at the stage of not accepting that he has an eating problem.

maybe see if he wants to see a sports nutritionist? they could educate him about the food demands of his body and sport

Have you chatted with the coaches? My senior year, all the coaches had an intervention with me. I hated it at the time but looking back as an adult, it was the best thing they could’ve done. I would also reach out to the school counselor, school nurse, & athletic trainers - they should all have resources to share with you.

We love you. We love love love you. I have strong feeling you will, but you don’t have to do damn thing for me. You know what running is to admire with deepest reference what do you have accomplished so far. I showed this to my neices, both in hs, and at z about this point that they turned me crying and asked, do you mean to tell me that she gave up running during the best time of her career to take care of an eating disorder? Yes I said, but she didn’t give up. I made it wrong, but I think getting back to running was a huge part of healing from this disease. You know my story with my dad that I had to face. That was also seas, but my father passed down to me. These kind of problems and then all different shapes sizes and circumstances. I’m just alone, but the fact that she did not let this limit her, makes her I absolutely most prospective athlete for these coming Olympics.
She also have to get or find or fan the flames of her Olympic spirit, she is the Olympic Spirit. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

Doing things that are harmful for you.
Under eating usually. Everyone has a "Diet". AND EVERYONE thinks a diet is calorie restrictive.
Even doing simple stuff that you 'heard' works, but you don't understand it.
Like when she talks about bone density.
She says it best when she says " I thought restricting what I was eating....was part of training"
You can "Diet/Eat/Train" yourself into nutritional holes. For instance if you eat broccoli and chicken for lunch, EVERY DAY. That is giving you everything you need.
A diet doesn't HAVE to mean calorie restriction. It shouldn't really.
The video is really good, watch it a few times to get into it.
The over riding thing ... if you "weigh" 150 pounds, and you eat at a pace to support 135 pounds .... doom awaits.
I was eating 6500 calories the day before a wekend race, racing cross country dirt bikes, 2 day events.

Say everyone says you should be drinking a gallon of water a day during the week leading up to an event.
And your pee should be clear.
Seems logical enough, except no one understands that is "water loading" nd you can pee all your minerals out AND you can kill yourself with water loading, science has a name for it, a girl died at the Boston Marathon from it 10 years ago.
We will follow as GOSPEL any kind of advice we find. Even if it's poor and wrong advice.
One winning racer is doing "anything" and we all do it.

Women probably just shouldn’t attempt high level athletics. It seems their minds are a little too fragile to handle the pressure required to be excellent.

@@Amberpurplepaige life is suffering. The therapeutic culture that has emerged in the past 20 years or so is simply a reflection of our denial of this fact. If you have mental problems I feel bad for you and you should try to address your issues but all this patting each other on the back over whatever pathology you have is pathetic.

I agree and I hate how these people blame someone else for their eating disorder just because they told them to lose weight or something like that. When in reality, it’s just them being mentally weak and they should stop being so sensitive.
