There is something satisfying about seeing others struggle with an old boat! Good luck on the old engine. I am on my 3rd SBC in mine in a year. I subbed to see your progress.

“We’ll let dad do that”, replaces cushion over wasp nest. Happy Father’s Day 😆😆😆
Don’t forget to do the name changing ceremony. Burn anything with the old name on it (probably just the transom which is rotten?) as an offering to the sea god, display the new name so everyone at the ceremony can see & say it, then drink a lot of rum.😆🍻

Take a look at what is supporting that flybridge. Now add up the weight that will be up there on "the best seat in the house". Pretty much everyone will want to be there. So, add in the weight of the structure and the weight of three or four people. Now you saw what was supporting it. Bayliners were known as entry level boats and built to a low standard. Not to worry though. That head is generally not supporting anything. Pull the headliner and you will see it is a flimsy thin layer whose only purpose is to separate the space, not structural at all. Since the aft bulkhead was also pretty flimsy you lose nothing by it rotting away. Just rebuild it as structure to carry the above weight and to stiffen the window, flybridge assembly. Those windows are lightweight aluminum and contribute little to carrying the bridge and load. I have seen many that in any kind of a sea have flexed so much that they literally 'blew' the glass out of the frames in a million jagged pieces. So after building a strong aft bulkhead then move inside to brace the forward cabin to carry the flybridge. I have used 2x2 oak wrapped with epoxy (round the edges) forming two uprights and a crossmember all glassed in to the stringers and cabin top. Gussets to give it the lateral strength as well as compressive. It works nicely to put the one upright into the settee backrest and the other behind or alongside the pilot station. This keeps the central passageway open. Then I would also use 2x2 oak steam bent and epoxy them in as crossmembers (three or four at minimum) in the overhead to stiffen the flybridge deck. The oak gives the most strength so you don't lose headroom yet the 1 1/2" thickness will stiffen the deck tremendously. A few layers of glass on the deck from above won't hurt. The other thing you are trying to cure is all that flexing causes a myriad of leaks. Nothing as uncomfortable if you are overnighting or in bad weather as a leaking cabin. The shear strength you gain on the aft bulkhead if properly done (tie everything down to the stringers) and that forward framing will go a long, long way toward fixing the problems Bayliner sent off the assembly line. You can steam wood with a section of 4" ABS and a tea kettle. If you are going to put shelving in where the head bulkhead is it would not hurt whatsoever to frame that down to the stringers and tie it in to the overhead as well. That would give you a 'box beam' in that corner and stiffen it even more. Kind of like what an elevator shaft core does to a high rise. A previous commenter was correct in that the cabinetry does stiffen the hull but it does nothing for the cabin structure itself. Bayliner was a subsidiary of Brunswick Corp. when they came on the market here in the Pacific Northwest in the late sixties. They gained popularity not through quality but by packaging and financing a total boat package. Up til then you had to buy the boat, trailer, and motor separately and get financing yourself. They had the capital behind them to provide their own financing right in the dealership. Walk in, walk out, be on the water tomorrow. They were an entry level boat and a place to easily get into boating. Good luck with your project. It gives a feeling of satisfaction of taking a boat and making something more out of it than it ever was.

@@RuggedWrench I’m sure your a bit further ahead in person than the video shows, but some hull ON-OFF cleaner would help get rid of that yellowing in the gel coat, toilet bowl cleaner has some of the same chemicals as the ON-OFF branded cleaner, at a cheaper cost, but it is watered down.

A word of caution here for you guys. Be very careful about removing walls (bulkheads) and internal cabinets and such other than doors and cabinet doors and covers. During this period Bayliner used a method where the internal structure was all tied together in order to strengthen and reinforce the whole structure of the boat. The deck and hull were not stand alone units with the interior just to partition the boat into areas like galley, head, sleeping. All those walls and compartments are all tied together to make the boat a monocoque or unitized construction and greatly reduce flex, vibration and increase overall strength of the boat. Also some areas were enclosed and sealed with the intention of them serving as buoyancy tanks in some models. I don’t remember if your boat has the buoyancy chambers or not, but I do see a lot of structural bulkheads and partitions as you show the inside of that boat.
The walls around the toilet area are used to support the fly bridge area where the helm seat is the door posts support the bridge deck. You put a couple of full grown men on that fly bridge, you need that support the rear wall and head wall provide.

Removing the closet bathroom and putting the porta-potty up front is a good idea. Big windows or a shorty sliding door would look nice as long as you make enough support for the roof and people sitting up top. Nice the steering loosened up!

Just something to consider… We have a closet head too and wouldn’t consider moving it because the kids/teens like lounging in the forward cabin, maybe for your grandkids? We had a porta under the seats and quickly grew tired of kicking everyone out of the cabin to pee. Probably would work if you never want to sleep in the cabin otherwise you would hear “wake up, get out, I gotta pee”. 🤷‍♂️😆
