The second version of that story is correct about the sad event leading up to that Halifax bomber having crashed. The story is quite a long one but the crew had lost their way in dense cloud and had been instructed to maintain height as it was known they were in a mountainous are - and a "Mosquito" fast fighter/bomber had been sent out to locate and guide them to safety. For whatever reason though the crew reduced height and hit Great Carrs at the point now marked by that memorial that also incorporates part of the plane's landing gear. The resulting fire was intense, and as can be seen by some of those bits of the landing gear having melted. Afterwards RAF personnel were sent up to cut the wreck into bits and as its a remote area they threw the remaining remnants over the adject cliff. One of the engines from the plane was recovered, and used to be outside the local museum in Coniston Village.
Been very low and depressed today, and I can't shake it! But watched about 30mins of this earlier and I'm now sat in the car park at Tiberthwaite 😅so thank you for making me give my head a wobble and making me drag my sorry backside off the sofa and out 😊
Just letting you know I'm "THAT hardcore" and watched all the way through 😜👍🏼 Haven't dropped a comment for a while but I still give a thumbs up and like every single one of your videos. I'm the guy with the Salawa Repace's you met on your way up to Blea Rigg, up Stickle Ghyll! Quality videos as always mate. Perfect to wind down the day too in the evenings. For the record, I love the waffling and it really adds to your videos so not a problem for me 😀 All the best!
Four and a half thousand people can't be arsed to give you a thumbs up. I understand how hard it must be to press a button. Even if I don't enjoy someone's vlog, I still give them a Like. They have spent time putting it together, something I don't have the ability to do. By the way, love the waffle.
Madeira is beautiful but there's something about the Lake District which is unique to anywhere in the world, you seem to have that glint in your eye again.
A grand hike and waffle, so many interesting things to see, the quarries, copper mines and great views. Some really good path ways, not forgetting having a witch snapping at your heels... Respect to the airmen that lost their lives. Thank you Glenn.
Dear Mr BC, your videos are definitely’High End’, your waffle is informative, an asset to your videos and funny 😁 I so look forward to sitting with my cuppa & walking along with you in the beautiful Lake District. Really enjoyed your Madeira walks too. I solo walk a lot in the lakes and you have inspired me to try some of the more challenging hikes. 😊
Hi mate. Currently about 16C here in Durham. Hoping to start my walking season over there shortly. Enjoyed your Madeira series with the lovely Dina but the Lakes is just, well, it's the LAKES !😁 I hope that 'witch' isn't watching this video, she'd be gutted !!
I am watching this seven days later. June 02, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and it is 26C. Amazing vistas, I enjoyed tagging along. Thank you - Ontario Canada
Sorry to say I've missed a fair tew adventures lately but I'm glad I came back to this rippah of a video, so happy to hear the wafflage and take in the views with you 😊 Cheers from Western Australia 🦘 🇦🇺 🤘
Keep waffling... I don't look at it like that I find the channel very knowledgeable the map route is class. I did this route with a wild camp thrown in in winter. Keep it up (waffling away)👏👏👏
Waffle on! Can't cope without the wafflage! An essential part I'd say.. Great video this, definitely one to watch again and again as it is chock full of goodies! Never knew about the mini Matterhorn! Strangely enough I was just today in a UA-cam Matterhorn rabbithole 😂👍👍👍
That music! That voice! Those views! Welcome home Glenn. As nice as Madiera was, there is no place like the lake district. We have a little sunshine here in Northumberland ( that's the forgotten land between Leeds and Scotland!,) Glad you're back on home turf. Finn would make it extra special. Waffle on. ❤
What a great video, which we watched while staying at Brantwood House, Coniston. Tried a short section of this walk from the car park, then headed to The Ship for a beer! The landlord said “Hi” and has bookmarked your video. We really enjoy your videos and our short visit to the lakes. Thank you! :)
Morning! Started watching your awesome content a couple of months ago and inspired me to sort my belly out and get out there. Last week organised to walk to Golden Valley pilgrimage walk in Herefordshire - walking for 6 days and stopping in historic churches. Not as far as you ya machine but for me anyway, your videos inspired. And yes there's village pubs close to each stop.
I absolutely love this one! It’s so good and I love your waffle 😂 Spectacular Glen 💜 amazing work. I did think of a new t shirt for you……. ‘I’m going to stop moaning’ 😂😂😂
I am a member of the WAFFLING club LOL. It is who you are and how you share your world with all of us! I live in Rhode Island USA. Today it hit 95 degrees 38% humidity.. not what we should be experiencing in May. You make me want a Mars bar!! Thanks for sharing! Love from the USA!
Really good informative video again Glen. Also, nothing better than sitting on a rock, on top of a hill, having your bait, taking in the scenery, the peace & tranquility. Brilliant. Newcastle upon Tyne, (27th May) warm with a shower. 😊
Wonder if anybody else has seen the witch? See you have had other strange encounters on the fells. We once met an elderly gentleman with a german accent wearing dungerees, wellies and an ancient rucksack at the foot of Blease Fell. He asked us "is this the way to Blencathra?" and set off in front of us. He then disappeared from view and we never spotted him again, bright sunny day but he seemed to completely disappear 😮
Waffle Edge...that's what sets this channel apart, in a good way. I recall reading Richard Adams' book The Plague Dogs, much of which was set around this part if The Lakes. The original book used Mr Wainwright's illustrations. A good read!
That red haired witch story has some credibility. During the 15th century red haired women were persecuted. Did you see some type of forgotten entity? Thank you for making these vlogs. I love that you always add the gpx files so I get to follow in your footsteps/escapades.
Loved this route and it’s definitely going to be one of my next walks up there. Also the Witch story was brilliant, although it does sound like it was a creepy experience. P.S please continue with as much waffle as possible this household is a big fan of the waffleidge 😂
Glenn, I never hesitate to give all your videos a like! Your content is always great. Thanks for taking this 67 year old with you on your adventures. Have loved and walked in the lakes since the 70's! Stayed at Brathay hall on an outward bound for my company. Have fallen in love with the lakes since that may venture in 1975. Getting a bit old for it now but try to motor uo to the lakes whenever I can. Thankyou!
Re. the Halifax, 50 years ago I was an Air Cadet and during a weeks walking in the Lakes we did get up near the crash site. The officer/instructor with us said that the Halifax was largely intact (albeit burned out) and that the crash was reported several times until eventually, to stop it being reported again, a Crab Air team bimbled up the mountain, cut it up and threw it down Broad Slack. BTW, the waffle is fine.
Another very enjoyable Video Glenn. I’m getting quite used to your “waffle “ which brings your videos to life, though you do yourself a disservice describing your pleasant chatter as such. So pleased to see you avoided using words like “ absolutely “ stunning “ and “fabulous” over much if at all..( my personal finger nails on blackboard experience..🤣🤣
Thanx 4 this craggie. I followed your route yesterday (skipped Grey Friar) in 8½ hours (wee legs) . That last ascent was a killer! Amazing part of the Lakes. Loved it! (Brown cow)
Enjoy the waffle, it’s great info. Planning my walk there in the spring of 2025. I’m from the Peak District BTW and try to get out at least 3 to 4 times a week as whilst a bit smaller scale it is very similar. Love the channel and always love seeing Fin doggie.
Honestly love the waffle I’ve even started saying things like ‘hey herdy’ and ‘mars bar’ and ‘tarnlet’ 😂 from South Shields been about 13 degrees here with showers off and on all day, when will this summer start 😂
Today it is about 15 degrees Sunday Evening whilst watching your stunning rambling video. Don't change anything, love you the way you are. Best regards Dan and Nicky xx
I am one of those who live the other side of the world.. during the day bright sunshine with 12c at night got to -4last night, we are by the coast ... It's very much colder up the Tekapo and Mount Cook area... Keep the films coming 😊
Wet n miserable 12° Cornwall checking in. Great to see you back in the Lakes after your Madeira escapades Glenn. Always a good day to watch your high-end, waffle-filled docu-vids! I've added my sub to your Rawwalks, of course. "Breasty Hause" is a crackin' name for a Bordello!! 🤪😆
Hi Glenn 💙 welcome home 🏡 loved madeira fantastic vlogs! 💕💙 but welcome home! Honestly Glenn I adore your so called waffle I’m 💯 for it! I nearly fell off my chair laughing when you said you have the other channel for people that don’t like waffle. That you’ve cut the waffle out and said but you obviously couldn’t cut your breathing out! Hahaha 🤣 I laughed and broke ribs your humour! Dry humour is brilliant 🤩 your waffle is informative! So educational and soooo much fun for us in the waffle club so please no more apologies we love it 🥰 💙 fabulous vlog today (as always) they lift my heart every time 💙 thank you 😊
My partner and I are spending next week based in Ambleside. We will be checking out your photography in the two restaurants there plus trying out a few of your walks, not sure which ones yet. After six months of illness your videos have kept me going. The Lake District is my favourite place, which I try to visit each year. Your videos make you feel like you are there all year round. Thank you for all your effort and for putting them out there.
Hi Glenn - Did this walk today; (Sat the 1st of June), absolutely loved it. Been walking in the LD for many years, but have never done the Greenburn round before. What a revelation !! One of the best walks I have ever done, I genuinely can't believe that I have left it out until now. It's a stone-cold classic, with epic climbs and stunning views all the way around. Genuine thanks for the 'heads-up' on this one mate. Hope to bump into you on'th fells sometime, so I can shake your hand. Many thanks for all the content.
I love your videos and your "waffle". Could listen to you talking, especially so passionately, for hours. Also you are funny which also helps. Honestly they bring me such peace and mental calmness
Glenn waffle all you like amazing vlog, what a walk that must be would loved to have walked that in my day, but not a problem still did it, walked every inch of the way with you. Keep up the good work definitely going to get view of the Pikes amazing and see if the Witch is there 👍
I think this looks like the best place I've seen so far in the walking the lakes series particularly the first half of the walk. Amazing. Not been there before but its definitely on the list now.
Another great video. We recently had a lovely ‘wedding anniversary’ walk, with a picnic lunch right next to “Witch’s Bridge”….and now I don’t think I’ll ever go near the place again! 😂
I had to pause the video and play it back from 35:40 because you said Swirl How and I immediately thought brown cow and then I thought did he actually say that very quietly? Yep, you did. Tickled me.
Hiya Glen, yes I'm still here, loving it too, we are currently in the camper vayn in hawes, north Yorkshire. Its currently 13 degrees here , the sun's out and we just saw thee troughing thi Mars bar😂. Now I've trawled all over those fells and never knew there was a mini matterhorn?? Every day's a school day. 😀
Thanks Mr Crag! We are heading up on Thurs so we've not got this one on the list for our travels this hols! One day we may see you out in t'fells, i'm keeping hoping 🤞🏻 and do NOT apologise for the wafflage, I can't believe anyone would want to watch without it? Surely that's the best bit no?! 🤷🏻♀
It’s currently 33°C here in Dubai. Definitely not walking conditions for another 6 months or so. Certainly no where as stunning as the Lakes here in the UAE.
Another part of the Lakes i'm looking forward to explore later in the year, Wouldn't be the same without the waffle, 15% here in Suffolk. Thanks Glen another great vlog.
.....Good Afternoon, the black and white photograph of Finn @27:30 is probably the finest that you have taken of her in the Lakes, is this photograph available to purchase ?, thanks Michael.....
14 degrees here in Norfolk with heavy showers. Aww, I'm so glad the video tonight is in the faithful Lake District. Brilliant waffle we can learn so much from this. 😊
Hi Glenn, that is the crash site and most of the aircraft was OK and was cut up and thrown down the gully, due to continual sightings and reports from other aircraft, the undercarriage was put on the memorial crash site.
Hi Glenn, I live in carlisle cumbria bit watching this video from Rhyl in North Wales. Love the waffle as usual. Wouldn't be you without it. Great video aswel, and a fantastic route.
Hiya Glenn...Another stunning walk with plenty of great waffle😂 WE are still cracking on with your season 1 routes and are back up Wednesday for the Sheffield pike route 😀 now that we got our breath back from getting up Dollywagon a few weeks back...Thanks again for all you do making these videos 👍🏻😁👍🏻
Cracking walk, Glenn, got to be one if my favourites. Great video btw. I'm from Sunderland, flipping only 12 degrees today, 9th June (soz, I'm late catching the video), ridiculous for the middle of June!

We have never tried that start on Wetherlam, one of our favourite fells. Fantastic.
You have freaked me out with the witch story, but now I'm intrigued to who she was and what the heck she was doing, and where is she now 🤔 😮😂
Another great video.
