Jimmy said he absolutely enjoyed working with Puff Daddy on this song. It baffled him that some people were being negative about it. He said it was a real challenge, but fun.

Where did you read Jimmy Page making that statement? Something he said 22 years ago and spoke that positive about a Rapper? Jimmy loves to play his songs he wrote and would never alter them to suit anyone, so it seems like a bigger deal for the Rapper than for Jimmy!.

@@julesrose7738 Just finished reading the book "Light & Shade. Conversations with Jimmy Page" and he indeed said great things about this experience. I wish more inter-genre music would've happened over the last 30 years or so but it wasn't to be. Rap & hard rock/metal can often be a great combination. Just listen to Anthrax & RUN DMC "Bring the Noise". Us metalheads LOVED it. I'm sure the rap fans loved it too! Now 30 or so years later I'm an older boy and absolutely appreciate and respect 1980's classic rap. Once it got into gangsta and then later on hip-hop (which is a real insult to REAL hip hop music) it got repetitive, angry & lacking in any musical value. Every song & every video (flashing Benjamins, girls twerking and looking pissed, fancy cars and the usual BS) the same crap. I'm sure some of the classic rappers feel the same way.

Agreed. Unfortunately I never saw Zeppelin live. I did get to see Page & Plant in Phoenix in the mid 90's. I believe it was called the No Quarter Tour. I keep hoping they'll get John Paul & Jason Bonham together for a tour, but it doesn't appear that is ever going to happen.

He gave out a lot of energy for the performance. He’s never been known for being a good rapper but he will always try to put on a show.

I was a young boy during this time and I give Puffy a lot of credit for putting me and many other black American youth of my generation onto the brilliance of Led Zeppelin. This is what happens when hip-hop and rock and roll are brought together. Imagine how many new fans Aerosmith got when they re-released Walk This Way with Run-DMC. You don’t have to love rap but you cannot deny that it dominates the music world just as rock did many years ago and when both are combined, magic usually happens. This song was a great moment for both genres.
You could not have put that better and it works both ways as I'm an old rock fan and these kind of collaborations open me up to hip hop and rap music.

You’re absolutely right. I was 15 when DMC came out with Walk This Way. I knew of Aerosmith but didn’t know any of their music. DMC’s version of Walk This Way turned me into a very big fan of Aerosmith.

I'm old enough to remember when RuN-DNC covered Aerosmith's 'Walk this way. There was real hate towards Rap at the time. Its the same things wth this song....

People on this thread seem to be missing the point. Puff Daddy's fans will learn about led zeppelin. After listening to the tracks he produced on bad boy I was introduced to Bowie, Sting , Marvin Gaye, God knows how many samples. In the same way Brit invasion brought back a friendly version of blues.

people can hate all they want of course. Jimmy and Sean performed this song live several times when the Godzilla movie came out, including their performance on Saturday Night Live, and it always looked like they were having so much fun. seems like an odd collaboration on paper but they clearly enjoyed working together. the song succeeds as a crossover that pays homage to Kashmir in a way that gets the attention of a different demographic; kids who might not of otherwise heard Led Zeppelin before.

Remember that Run DMC and Aerosmith had done a successful crossover and at this point in time Aerosmith were more relevant than Led Zeppelin. I’m sure Pagey had the idea that this could be fun and cool as well as re-raise the profile of Led Zep a little as their 30th anniversary remasters were starting to come out.
Yes it got me into Zepplin without knowing it. Kashmir is one of my favorite songs. I still want to hear Robert plant and puffy mixed in. That would be cool.

I don't understand how can somebody tell something bad about this song. It's a killer. Puff Daddy gave it all and Jimmy Page is as badass as it needs. This was explosive.

Well, after a couple of decades I might like it more than I have. I had mixed emotions of it at the time if I recall. I think looking back it was REALLY annoying how this song was getting more attention than Page And Plant's come back studio l.p. (and classic I might add), "Walking Into Clarksdale". Nothing particular wrong that this even came out during that project but it was odd and frustrating. Especially since Page And Plant's collaborations didn't continue much after that. So I and I think many were just extra sensitive to it to be honest which might have clouted some our judgement, eh. It's pretty different from Jimmy doing lead on Mariane Faithful's, "As Tears Go By", huh? 😅 Which is all fine, cool, and good, eh.

As a long time Zeppelin fan, I just ignored all of the criticism of this this collaboration, like water off of a duck's back.
I remember watching this on SNL. I may be a boomer but I LOVED this version!! Brilliant!

I'm a 55 year old old school rocker and love this shit man way to put the best of all time into this song man I remember when this first came out man what a killer song!!!! Never take the place of the original version but I likes it!!!!

I too am an old school rocker. I cover several Zeppelin songs in my band. Kinda known around my area as the chic who can belt out Plant and Ann Wilson. I've been performing for nearly 40 years and come from a very very long line of professional musicians. I have to say, though, one of the most important things I learned if you want to be a good musician, is, you don't have to like everything: But, you need to be able to appreciate everything. Here is an example: I can not stand to listen to about 99%of anything by Rush. I don't like their sound. However, in the progressive rock genre, I would say they are the best at what they do. And, as musicians individually, I like them a lot. People - were/are great to everyone. They are true to their band, their sound, songwriting and make us Canadians proud. That is just an example. Now as for THIS song, I like it. Energy is great, arrangement is true to the original with some very nice additions (especially love the French horn line), and the original was used in a respectful way. Both artists gave it their all. I would say, when they performed on SNL, they seemed to be enjoying themselves more and you could hear that. Just my humble 2 cents

Have to say I never rated Puffy much but he excelled himself with this song, it's not just the JP influence, I honestly had never heard him sing but he does both rap and sing in this.

Jimmy Page performed with the Black Crowes at this show as well. I had press credentials for this show and had access to the photo pit in front of the stage, backstage area and the Giants practice bubble (behind the stadium) where they had interview areas, food, drinks and backstage activities with the artists. Fun evening!

Hip Hop with live musicians can become a very powerful form of music. I have to wonder why this didn’t start a trend in the Hip Hop world.
It didn’t at the time but years later and major hip-hop acts like Jay-Z, Kanye West, Drake and countless others do it on a regular basis, which was rare in the late 90s and early 2000s.

This really is a brilliant collaboration and one hell of a performance. The whole arrangement between Jimmy's legendary perfection on guitar, the orchestral backing adding so much depth, and Puff's raw emotion is a powerful synergy the likes of which we seldom see.

Um yes, the drummer's moniker is Mario Winans, who is related to the famous and well known gospel singer's The Winans...not to be mistaken for the Waynans!!!

I remember friends of mine who were Metallica fans refused to listen to anything after black album. We used to go to a Metal/Rock bar and since it wasn't that big we all knew each other. I got the chance to play some Metallica tracks from the then-most-recent-album Death Magnetic and they were like " Hey this is good mate. What's the band?" Their jaw dropped when I said Metallica. Totally speechless.
Most people like to hating for the sake of hating. They probably think they're edgy by being pathetic haters without ever trying what they hate. I am no exception to that as I'll never try Sushi, vegan menus and Dragon Ball Super KEKL.
This is Puffs ' s real respect to Jimmy and Led and Kashmir! It was my favorite song, when the film came to cinema. Now I respect the old fellows- Aerosmith, Led. If you listen the quality of sound, it' s the best. All the old school Rock musicians are the best. I was in 2007 Aerosmith concert in Tallinn and it was awesome.

LOLOL..... let me clear this up... this is Mario "Skeeter" aka "Yellowman" Winans on drums. He started out as Diddy's drummer and one of his producers for a few of bad boy artist and then became an artist himself for a short period. But to me and many others in the gospel music world we know and love him as simply Mario Winans. And yes he's been a monster on drums drums he was a kid recording with the multi Grammy award winning gospel family and group, The Winans!

It's a very mediocre song. It's not terrible, but it's far from good.
Most people would rather not see music evolve. Or let alone the human race. And it's always started with the music of youth that really upsets the old timers.
Most people that hate the song hate it because of it sampling the legendary song kashmir. That alone will open it up to hate because kashmir is a masterpiece. While this is ok it in no way is on the same level of awesome as kashmir.

I about shot a load in my shorts when I first heard Zeppelin summer of 69 when I was 17. Damn. I was already tripping on Hendrix, Big Brother, Blue Cheer etc and then these guys came along. As far as this performance goes I could watch that drummer all day long.

It was super hated on. People felt like black people were trying to steal thier culture. Super ironic. Same thing happened with lil Nas x to a lesser extent thanks to Billy Ray Cyrus.

When Led Zeppelin recorded this Jimmy Page actually put restraints on John Bonham so that he wouldn't over play the drums. I don't think this drummer got the memo.
I’m usually not a big fan of sampling but Puff did a great job here. And he did it with Jimmy Page’s blessing.
On Kashmir Jon Bonham used a slap-back delay. To change that into a heavy double-beat sounds amazing.
