This is the best tutorial that I have seen for redoing a deck. Thank you for all of your hard work and effort in putting this together.
Great video Scott, I've used this product and others like it. I'm a contractor in Northern Virginia and have pressure washed and stained dozens of decks. Nothing lasts forever, especially staining, you get maybe two years depending on sun exposure. Your video explains this process better than anything I have seen. The preparation, as you state on your video is paramount, read the instructions! Brushing the space between the deck boards, nails and cracks makes the difference for good results. Once that is done you can get a nice even layer on top. Make sure you have a lot of cheap brushes, it's worth the extra couple dollars.

Agreed, Clean and prep is everything. Currently on 3 years of the paint. Just a few places need a re-do due to high traffic and huge exposure to water and snow that pounds on it. Normally our paint doesn't last a year.
I'll put my two cents, I've placed the deck over in my old home deck. I live in New England with all types of weather. I had at at least three years with all seasons 90+ summers, frigid cold temperatures, snow and rain in between. I have kids and seasonally held cook outs and pretty decent traffic. I say all of this and can confirm that it has held up pretty well. As he noted in the video it's all about the prepping and following the directions. It's also important to apply two generous coats where where and go between each board to ensure saturation. I disagree with the brush I used the rollers for first and second coat worked well. There has been some wear but it wasn't bad and for what it was worth I touched up where ever I could. I was happy with the end result. I since then sold the home and will need to do the same process with a new deck. This summer.
Hello Jadie, I am going back and forth about whether I want to use this deck over or not. Did you put the deck over on your railings as well or did you use something different for the railings?

Thank You for making these instructions clear. So many make negative statements about these types of products and almost every time its because of not following instructions and lack of prep.
Even the timing and planning around the weather is so important. It is very difficult to get anything to adhere for a long period of time to wood that has moisture changes in it.
But it can be done if the instructions are followed and the prep is done.
I applied one single coat only to my deck last summer (2015), with the intention of applying a second coat shortly after - alas, I never got around to the 2nd coat. 1 year later, this summer (2016), 95% of my deck still looks very good. I do have several small spots (~

@@stupedcraig The product absolutely did NOT hold up in the uncovered parts. It's been all gone for probably 2 years now. About half of my deck is covered, though, and that half has held up well and still looks nice.

Scott THANK YOU. We spent THOUSANDS of dollars hiring contracts to our deck only to have them RUIN it. We followed your video and redid everything ourselves and it really saved us. THANK YOU! Hand painting was the way to go after the roll over. I cannot believe what it did to close up the cracks.

Maybe in warm climates, but where we get snow and freezing temps, probably not so good. My brother used it on his deck, followed the instructions and the following year it was peeling off. Also, my neighbor used it as well and same results on the top and even the face of the deck.
Does this guy work for Behr? I'm pretty sure he had to rebuild his entire deck within 1-3 years after applying the mud that is DeckOver.
That’s what it’s for isn’t it? Getting a couple of more years out of an old deck? You wouldn’t put it on a new deck.

Here’s the thing. Because you followed the manufacturer’s guidelines to a T, it wouldn’t be your fault if the deck went sideways.

Wouldn't power washing, letting it dry, sanding, then coating be a more solid idea? Scrubbing seems like a lot more work than you need if you have the time for the deck to dry after power washing?
You can use a pressure washer, you just have to wait at least 3 days after so the wood can dry out. I am not sure why that is a problem since you have to leave the other chemical cleaners for a day or two as well.
Pressure washing raises the grain of the wood. On the advice of the paint centre of our local hardware store, we pressure washed a few year old deck and let it dry out for days, and then coated with 2 coats of Benjamin Moore solid stain. Just a a year later, half of the stain was peeled off of the deck.
We complained to the store, and a Benjamin Moore representative came to our home to evaluate. The representative stated that we should never have been told to pressure wash the deck prior to staining because it raises the grain and hinders adhesion. The blessing was that Benjamin Moore replaced all of our stain, even though it likely wasn't their product that failed. We are talking 8 gallons of stain, so my husband and I were very happy that the expensive stain would at least be covered.
To properly prep our deck for the new stain, I sanded the entire deck with a hand sander. We have A LOT of decks (4 in total), so it took some time, but the result was a much more stable surface to which the stain could adhere. We moved a couple of years later, and the solid stain was still in very good condition. Also, the representative stated that if your deck is gray and weathered, the deck is full of small, feather-like wood particles. Stain or paint won't adhere well to it. If you have ever stained a weathered, gray deck, pick up a piece of stain that peeled off of it, and look at the back. You will see the gray fibres on it. You either need to sand it off or wash it with a particular cleaner (can't recall now what it is called). We opted to sand to be sure the deck was properly prepared for stain. Can't say how well it held up after a couple of years, as we moved away and no longer own the home. Hope this helps someone. :-)

Painting flat wood surfaces is not recommended, I tried it and it did not even last thru the winter. it peeled off endlessly. Problem now how to remove? I had a choice, pressure wash forever and try and clean it and then be back with the same problem.or pry boards up and flip them to unused side. Well I flipped them and pressure washed the back side and it cleaned up beautifully, just have slight dark spots where boards were on joists. I had originally used galvanized nails, used deck screws this time. I now have a 30 year old deck that looks like new except for the dark spots. I am trying to get those now.
10:42 forearm saver- get a new garden sprayer container (some ppl use these for camp showering for example) and then you won't have to continuously use your hand to spray it.

Why didn't you use a roller to apply a thick coat and and brush out? It must have taken all day to dip that little brush and only get 3 inches of coverage. Thanks for the video!

THANK YOU for telling people not to use a pressure washer to prep your deck for refinishing. So many men feel the need to use one, find excuses to use it. I've been telling people for years, you're pushing the water/moisture deep into the wood when you do this. And you can damage the wood (even siding).
this dude doesnt know shit. Yes, use a pressure washer just dont blast it on full power. 3200psi and while moving. Dont just hold in one spot and chew up the wood.

i have this on my deck and i also agree with the brush.. the roller just doesn't get into the cracks as good as a brush

From experience, no matter what you use, such products may last up to 2 years. On horizontal surfaces, especially up north, the expansion & contraction of wood & Deckover - like products will begin to peel and flake. I reapply every 2 years and spot fix annually. This amount of work seems equivalent to proper yearly maintenance of new decks.
If only previous homeowners maintained these decks from the start, eh?
Behr deckover decreases the lifespan of any exterior wood exposed to the elements. I am a home inspector and I have seen this stuff rot decks rapidly. The thick coating traps moisture in the wood causing wood to rot rapidly. They have been in a law suit. I highly recommend reconsidering this product.
Yes, I would like to know how long it lasted before it started peeling like crazy. I bet one year maybe less. Behr has a terrible product. I wish I never used it. It did look nice at first. Many other people that have used this product say the same thing.

i use this too i like it .i thin the first coat to make it absorb better .and use a brush on a pole .also only do 5 boards at a time without stopping to prevent lapping marks .tip put drop of water on wood if it absorbs water it is dry enough to paint .oil primer is much better for bare wood as primer

Great video but would be excellent to know how it looks now.
I had an awful experience with this stuff. I used the thickest variety they had at the time. It started drying from brushing out of the bucket. It filled the cracks between the boards. My deck formed puddles when it rained and the paint was shot after two years. I sanded the shit out of it too. Even in between the boards. Should have cut between the boards with a buzz saw. Its probably a good product but go with the thinner on than you think you need. I'm going to stick with sealers.
After a year of an ohio winter and direct summer this garbage was peeling off looked great at first
Used Behr Deck-over a year ago. followed instructions on label and tips from home depot. Did not use power washer. Scrubbed the whole deck by hand using Behr products. Made sure it was not done in the sun and no rain in the forecast. Brushed on entire deck. Did small sections only 3 or 4 boards wide. Looked good for a while. Waited a month for second coat. Didn't last a year. cracks, pealing and not filling small gaps . Went back to home depot. They said to strip entire deck and use an 80 grit sandpaper after stripping. This would give the paint something to stick to. Allot of time elbow grease and money and it looks terrible. Behr said they would replace the paint and send cleaning product. But I had to do the work. Any suggestions on how to clean the deck off. Feel like I did allot of work for nothing. From what I have searched and reviewed, it seems to be hit and miss on if it works. Maybe its the type of wood. I don't know. It's almost looks and feels like I would be sanding thin rubber.
The problem with painting any deck is that the paint traps the moisture in. Moisture is naturally going to come out of the ground and go into the boards from the bottom. As soon as the hot sun beats down on the deck, it forces that moisture upwards. This is what causes it to chip, crack, split. So if your deck is elevated off the ground ( mine is a 2nd story deck), I would think it would absorb less ground moisture.
I have yet to try fully painting the bottom too, to see if it makes it chip,peal, etc less, this might be something you want to experiment with, before stripping it and starting over. ( it is possible that it isn’t bonding well to your deck, but it may also be absorbing too much moisture)
At the end of the day, any paint and sealing product will have this issue with moisture and heat from the sun
I'm in the same boat. I wonder if Scott who shot this video has an update. Mine peeled off the year after. It's been three years and I was so discouraged that I have just let it go. Plus, like you, I now have an even bigger, back-breaking job having to strip and then sand??? Crazy! I will take the paint back to Home Depot and put up a stink, but I will NOT use a behr product on it again. I'm going to go back to a stain and let the cracks be cracks! This was such a colossal waste of time!

@Air Strike Technologies If you applied this on new wood, then there's your problem. It's said to let new wood weather a few months or even more before sealing, staining or painting. Sorry about your luck.
I’m very serious about not painting wood. If you don’t want the beauty of wood use a different product. But as far as I’m concerned, wood gets stain and waterproofing and NOT paint! Why would anyone ever ruin perfectly good wood by covering it up with a paint type product?!? Would anyone ever paint wood flooring inside a home? So why do it outside?
@@devitomichael Hi - the reason I tried this is to try and extend the life of my over the hill deck. I agree with you about the look of wood, but there comes a time when it is no longer so beautiful. Turned into a diaster though, peeled in a lot of places, totally stuck on in others.
I am curious if you have any peeling from the product to date? How long ago did you apply deck over? My deck is peeling so can I add another coat of deck over after power washing the loose particles of wood that have peeled off or do I need to purchase new wood?
420fergie we did use a similar product ( restore ) was beautiful covered all our cracks and plus. But It didn’t last. In order to stay as beautiful according to my husband it needs to be redone every year.
I did 2 decks using this product. Looked great for a year. Two years later most of it bubbled and chipped off. I now need to completely strip 2 large decks. I heard that I was supposed to use a primer first so it may be my own fault.
I’ve never heard or seen primer for decks. Where would you find such a thing?

This deck had never been stained or painted before. Wonder how this would work on a deck that has previously been stained/painted. Nevertheless, still an interesting videol.

Hi, could you please tell us which colour you are using on this deck.. we need exactly this colour.we bought wedgewood sc107 from Home Depot. But that’s very bad experience,and we still didn’t have our painted deck.we’ve already got many sample colours, as can’t get exactly colour..
PLEASE do not use DeckOver!! I've been doing deck restoration for over 20 years, and this product will cause nothing but damage and headaches.
Try Cabot Deck Correct, especially if you live in cold climate. Mine turned out great!

I've painted all my many, many rails a glossy black...now to tackle the HUGE floor of my deck (and stairs) Already did the cleaning, now just have to pull up a few overly-cruddy boards then get painting! I have seen SO MANY reviews of rubber like peeling and flaking, but at this point, ANYTHING will be better! Just need to salvage my beautiful deck and simple staining is NOT an option. How is yours holding up? Any updates on the staying quality?
I tried this stuff is thick, after using it, I like it it's like I used a bed liner paint on the surface non-slip tuff

Awesome video, I've been searching for a break down of a consumer showing the process from start to finish. This was very informative. I'm at the first step of stripping the old paint off it's tuff. Makes you want to use a power washer to help get that stubborn paint off, but I'll take your advice and use a garden hose

it won't last. I did this three years ago and had to do it again but my deck let's water stay on the deck. I also live in Ohio where there is a lot of water.

I used it on my beautiful deck about 3 summers ago....and guess what? Half of it is peeling off!!! So I think this is a crap product!!! It took 3 people 3 days to do this deck and it looked wonderful but now I'm not sure what measures I'm going to have to use to take it off!
Probably because your wood wasn't completely dry. Forget what "they" say. Wood needs a good 3-7 days do dry out before painting it.
I know that......I read ALL of the instructions!!! And it was dry.
I had the same issues! It peeled off in a few months and yes, I followed the instructions carefully...now Ive heard of many people with the same experience! DO NOT BUY THIS EXPENSIVE PRODUCT!!!
However Deckover works very well on metal garage doors and other metal doors!

Hi can we use this on a brand new deck? My deck has 2 layers. First was done last year and I didn’t paint it yet. This year I just finish the second lower section. Now, can I use that product or it’s just over kill?

Great video. I was looking at this product to do my deck over. I stained for 2 years in a role and it didn't hold up. I am in Eastern Canada. Going to buy this product for sure to cover my wooden decks.
omg dont! This stuff is garbage. ESPECIALLY in states that have snowy winters. Rep told me it shouldn't even be sold in northern regions where we have snow.
On the pamphlet it said for prep to use the Deck Over cleaner. Why did you use this one?
This stuff cracks and allows water to get up under it . Rotting the wood. Did two decks both ruined on three yrs. Do not use it.

my holds up 5 years. 1 use the SOLID STAIN. 2. two coats. 3 powerwash. 4 pressure treated wood
This stuff is garbage. There are class action lawsuits against them. Mine has started to chip. I had to literally strip my deck with a sander.
How does it look now? I read/watched some terrible reviews about it chipping after only one year.
Did you notice a color change, darker, after applying the second coat? I put one coat on so far and it looks much lighter than in the can. Thanks, Mark

Thanks for this - I had a big fail trying this before and the product came off in patches in my test area - but now am willing to try again because of your video - I still have a giant container of this.... and my bad - I didn't read the instructions at all, didn't prep, and didn't wait, and freaked out when footprints and scuffs happened so easily so I stopped - and didn't do my decks. My bad. I have a few questions....How many containers of the prep cleaner did you use? You also showed a container of sealer - did you apply that over the Deckover? What about footprints and scuffs after it dries??
Can I use Deckover to repaint my already painted deck?..do I have to sand or can it just be repainted over a different color?..If so, still have to use cleaner first?..tks...
Don't use it , the product is garbage! . The only good use for it is to hide a deck that's in bad shape before you sell your house .

Is the surface slippery when wet? Stained my deck last year and my dogs tore it up pretty good. Looking for something more durable

It’s not going to be bullet proof. If you have a newer/nice looking deck, I would just use normal stains. I did not want to replace my deck as it was huge, so this was a great product to bring it back to life where stains would not.

Do not use behr rollover..it cracks water gets underneath it..stays and rots the wood..I am having to replace my entire deck horizontal surfaces..I followed the instructions to a tee.

OMG it must have taken you FOREVER to do that giant deck, spraying with a small spray bottle, scrubbing a little at a time, using a small brush. It looks great but I'm curious ...did you have help???? I was thinking of redoing my deck but I'm just a 65 year old small woman. I think it's too much from what I'm seeing. How long did it take you????

+David Wachtendonk I used a Behr deck stain, it's from the same colour pallets as the deck over so it matches well. The deck over would be really difficult to use vertically because it is so "stretchy or rubbery" and it has a long drying time so it would drop off before drying

Great but set the protruding nails below the surface.
I had to replace all of my deck wood myself because the people who sold me the house and slathered this terrible product all over it. Behr Deck over will collect moisture will cause the boards to rot will look ugly within a few years and all that wood then has to be replaced because there is no way to sand or otherwise get that garbage off the deck. if I had had lovely wood like you had I would sand any of the rough spots and put a nice coating of deck stain. I won't give the brand that I use because I'm not advertising for them.

I no longer own that house so I can’t do any updates. But it was on for 3 years with minor touch ups every summer (before I sold the house)
@@beyondextreme5246 You need to remove this video because not only do you not know what you are doing, it is VERY obvious to someone in the profession, but it is very misleading. If people go on your word, they are going to have a hell of a mess and a lot of time and money wasted and a deck that's ruined forever.
