It would have been better if you would have kept the joystick completely virginaly intact. Then it could be used on normal home computers. With an adapter cable from the seven pin Video Genie connection to a contra plug with nine connections, all classical joysticks could be used on the Video Genie, and still all of those joystick could be used on other computers. By the way, the moulded plug you cut off from it's rightful cable is very hard to come by. If you would have like to dedicate one special joystick for this Video Genie, then you could have saved the cable and replace it with an ordinary seven wire cable.
