I'm unsure if VPNs send purely encrypted data that "just goes from this server to point B" or if they can log where the request is coming from (i.e. if they log "Google -> VPN -> Your home" or just "Google -> VPN" and then in another packet "VPN -> Your home". If all they can read is the second case, which is how sockets work and probably how they work, then they will just have a hell of a time doing it with one VPN, and two (if very populated) would be hell on earth...

Because your ISP can see you're connected to Tor. There was a kid who got caught for sending his university a bomb threat while he was connected to Tor. His campus went through the internet logs of the campus internet and found the culprit since he was the only one connected to a tor node when the threats were sent. The alternative to a VPN is using a Tor bridge, which is simply a Tor entry known that is not publicly known to be an entry node. However, the issue with this is that all bridges are eventually exposed to be Tor bridges and replaced with new ones. So you can still be caught, just later. Someone with good opsec will be connected to a VPN 24/7 and then connect to Tor through the VPN. The reason for having the VPN on 24/7 is because you're going to be a suspect if let's say you connect to a VPN and then do something illegal 5 minutes later and then 1 minute later, you disconnect from the VPN.
the best solution is hand made VPNs, make your own, host it on your own with a provider that's trustworthy. It's not as hard as it sounds, costs about the same and is much safer if you're trying to avoid being tracked completely. Although don't use that for illegal activities anyways bc you could still theoretically be tracked and it's just not worth the risk

ehh, you could use a botnet (kinda hard to operate but you could pay for the service, big risk, probably not a the best idea unless you NEED that extra layer that can possibly make it worse for you) or just use completely randomly chosen safe and trusted cloud proxies (switch the proxy you use every time you do something new by having a shit ton of random proxies on the cloud but that's just more possible vulnerabilities that someone can exploit, this could help for a very short term but not a good idea in the long term use) but both options add more vulnerabilities and can be hard to maintain (unless you use someone else's work, which just brings you back to square one). It can be a help, but doesn't mean it will because with proxies in their very nature you still have to trust someone/something with a lot, or it's just so costly to run safe private proxies that you're probably better off with just using Tor normally.

The whole point of VPNs is to have a single choke point so you can't be narrowed down. If you're the only one using a VPN, it's not a strong VPN. If someone commits a crime and they look at the IP address and then check who's connected to that IP address and see that there's only one person, good luck. There needs to be a lot of people connected to that same VPN. Even if there are 10 people, you can still be narrowed down through other stuff through the crime you committed. They would see that the other 9 people had no motive to do the crime or they don't know English, or whatever (you get the point). The merit of using a less known VPN is if you don't want your ISP to know you're using a VPN. This is beneficial if you live in a dictatorship that bans VPN. In that case, you can connect to your own VPS and then chain it with another big VPN to mask the fact that you're using a VPN. That said, a committed government can still figure out you're using a VPN or at least strongly suspect it even if you do this, but it's far better protection that using an obvious big VPN whose server IPs can easily be logged by the government.
And how exactly are people supposed to "check who's connected to that IP address"? People running a site can see the ip of someone who sent the request, sure, but it doesnt give them instant access to every log of every connection the computer has ever made, nor does it allow any access to the computer at all. It's simply so the site can send back the requested information to the right computer. Now, whether or not your vps provider will shut down and investigate that remote server when asked to by the feds is another thing, but you'd just need to trust they won't or get one you do trust that's running somewhere completely separate from your govt.
@@Anonymous4045 Your ISP can see which of their clients was connected to the IP that caused the attack. ISPs tend to be oligopolies, so the government just has to acquire the data from a few ISPs before knowing everybody from that country who was connected to that IP. Additionally, the government can also analyse the IP and know that it doesn't belong to a big VPN company before making the request to the ISPs to give the data. If you're a serious threat, there may even be intergovernmental cooperation to try to find you. Using a big VPNs provides herd immunity unless you're a clown who connects to the VPN two minutes after you do something illegal and disconnect 30 seconds afterward, in which case you're still screwed. You can also trust more that big VPNs don't keep logs as many have been subpoenaed and/or audited. Your VPS or small VPN provider may not be as trustworthy. The best practice is to use a big VPN+Tor and to be connected to the VPN long before and after anything you don't want to be traced back to.

As for govts communicating with isps, yes, they can do and have done that, however, so have all the other big vpn companies that I know of lol. It all comes down to two things: do you trust your isp, and do you trust the person running the server you're sending the requests to. Tor is different in that you can use a bridge (so a first node that doesn't appear to be a tor server) to hide from your isp, and you don't really need to trust anyone at all if you just use .onion services. If you need to use an exit node, you just need to trust that whatever exit node it is isn't ran with bad intent. Now if you use a big vpn + tor, that's a huge red flag to the vpn co. and they could monitor you more closely for activities that aren't using tor. You said people should connect to a vpn long before they do stuff they don't want traced to them, but ironically that's about the worst thing you can do lol. You're telling your vpn provider "Hey, this is my ip address, email address, credit card, and phone number. I connect to tor, and I also visit (x, y, and z) a lot" They can use all that info to help de-anonymize you. That's also not even considering if your tor connection falters, or you accidentally go to a darknet site without using tor. The ultimate solution for connecting to the internet without it being traced to you is, of course, tails, whonix, or a similar OS and using .onion services exclusively. Then your anonymity really isn't in danger of being revealed unless you yourself give it away. If you just want privacy from things like ad companies, find an isp and a vps provider that you trust and set up a vpn of your own, as seen in this vid

There's no substantial evidence to show that the major players are lying about their policies. Many have gone above and beyond to hide in favourable jurisdictions like Panama and BV Islands with lax policies. Many use advanced technologies like RAMDisk servers and have Warrant Canaries to show they haven't received any secret warrants, gag orders, etc. These VPNs would go bankrupt if they got caught lying, so there's literally no reason to lie. They don't have to legally keep logs, so they wouldn't for no reason when it could cost them their whole business. On the other hand, VPS and ISPs will happily comply with law enforcement, many without even needing to be subpoenaed since they don't wanna deal with any legal costs. Yes, VPN companies have logs that you are their customer and that you paid for them, but that's another advantage of big VPNs: they have so many customers. If the government finds out someone from a big VPN did something illegal and asks for all customer records, they need to go through 10+ million users. For a small VPN, they need to go through way less people. Herd immunity for big VPNs. Tor bridges don't work as well as you think. Eventually, all Tor bridges are identified as Tor nodes and replaced with new bridges. If you used a Tor bridge, you might not be caught right away, but the node will be identified and you can be caught later on if they cross reference your past data with newly identified Tor Bridges and find a match. Tails is actually not secure either because Tails doesn't use persistent guard nodes by default. This means that every time you open a session, you connect to a different entry node instead of remaining connected to the same entry node (guard node) for months. Tails not having this is a major security flaw. Whonix does use persistent guard nodes, but is also a VM OS, so you are at risk if your computer if your main OS has any software that allows someone to spy on it, so make sure that's not the case. Either way, none of these can solve the correlation attack problem. People can correlate what you're doing based on the packets you send. Even without decrypting the packets you send, someone can analyse the timings of the packets to guess what you're doing. Watching a video looks different from browsing the internet for news, for example. Using a VPN instead of Tor makes you safer because the first people who'll be analysed this way are direct Tor users. Think about it. If the government sees that an illegal activity was traced back to a Tor exit node, who do you think they will look at first? All the people connected to a Tor node at the time or someone connected to a VPN? You can add some noise to your internet usage too over the VPN/Tor to make it harder to do an automated correlation attack and identify you.

Your better off just using tor, or making your own vpn, I make my own vpn it's super cheap to rent a vps, I setup my own and it's been much better than any of the other vpns I've used, mullvad is good too especially since they have Netflix support, but generally making your own vpn is way more trustable than some random overseas company, though most data centers keep some sort of logs and there's no getting around that so keep in mind.
Why would you use your own VPN? Firstly, as long as it's not in your household it's basically the same as using a VPN provider, secondly, you can be identified by your payment information by the server host
@@Cookiekeks : Depends what the VPN is for. If it's to hide a backtrace from some possible hackers, then you just need the contact info & payment info to not be tracked back to you personally. If it's to hide point-of-origin from e.g. an online video site, then renting a server to use for your own VPN can work for as long as noone sues for account info. If you're trying to hide activity from your national government, then your best bet may be to find some poorly policed spot with public wifi, splice some appropriate hardware into the bathroom lights above a common drop ceiling, and use TOR to hide the VPN.

If you're using monero, it shouldn't be. Coinpayments don't require you to create an account, unless you want to get a refund, make a claim or some other stuff that require an account. It's convenient for sellers because they have a instant crypto conversion feature, so merchants can avoid volatility with stablecoins, or just have it convert btc and other cryptos into Monero. That being said, I think this feature requires KYC, so they probably have KYC implemented for themselves on that coinpayments.

tor+vpn sounds less secure than tor by itself. Because you have to log into the vpn. And even if you use a throwaway email or a token, that still ties together all the activity you do while using that account/token.

Because your ISP can see you're connected to Tor. There was a kid who got caught for sending his university a bomb threat while he was connected to Tor. His campus went through the internet logs of the campus internet and found the culprit since he was the only one connected to a tor node when the threats were sent. The alternative to a VPN is using a Tor bridge, which is simply a Tor entry known that is not publicly known to be an entry node. However, the issue with this is that all bridges are eventually exposed to be Tor bridges and replaced with new ones. So you can still be caught, just later. Someone with good opsec will be connected to a VPN 24/7 and then connect to Tor through the VPN. The reason for having the VPN on 24/7 is because you're going to be a suspect if let's say you connect to a VPN and then do something illegal 5 minutes later and then 1 minute later, you disconnect from the VPN.
the best solution is hand made VPNs, make your own, host it on your own with a provider that's trustworthy. It's not as hard as it sounds, costs about the same and is much safer if you're trying to avoid being tracked completely.
Although don't use that for illegal activities anyways bc you could still theoretically be tracked and it's just not worth the risk

ehh, you could use a botnet (kinda hard to operate but you could pay for the service, big risk, probably not a the best idea unless you NEED that extra layer that can possibly make it worse for you) or just use completely randomly chosen safe and trusted cloud proxies (switch the proxy you use every time you do something new by having a shit ton of random proxies on the cloud but that's just more possible vulnerabilities that someone can exploit, this could help for a very short term but not a good idea in the long term use) but both options add more vulnerabilities and can be hard to maintain (unless you use someone else's work, which just brings you back to square one). It can be a help, but doesn't mean it will because with proxies in their very nature you still have to trust someone/something with a lot, or it's just so costly to run safe private proxies that you're probably better off with just using Tor normally.

The whole point of VPNs is to have a single choke point so you can't be narrowed down. If you're the only one using a VPN, it's not a strong VPN. If someone commits a crime and they look at the IP address and then check who's connected to that IP address and see that there's only one person, good luck. There needs to be a lot of people connected to that same VPN. Even if there are 10 people, you can still be narrowed down through other stuff through the crime you committed. They would see that the other 9 people had no motive to do the crime or they don't know English, or whatever (you get the point). The merit of using a less known VPN is if you don't want your ISP to know you're using a VPN. This is beneficial if you live in a dictatorship that bans VPN. In that case, you can connect to your own VPS and then chain it with another big VPN to mask the fact that you're using a VPN. That said, a committed government can still figure out you're using a VPN or at least strongly suspect it even if you do this, but it's far better protection that using an obvious big VPN whose server IPs can easily be logged by the government.
And how exactly are people supposed to "check who's connected to that IP address"? People running a site can see the ip of someone who sent the request, sure, but it doesnt give them instant access to every log of every connection the computer has ever made, nor does it allow any access to the computer at all. It's simply so the site can send back the requested information to the right computer. Now, whether or not your vps provider will shut down and investigate that remote server when asked to by the feds is another thing, but you'd just need to trust they won't or get one you do trust that's running somewhere completely separate from your govt.
@@Anonymous4045 Your ISP can see which of their clients was connected to the IP that caused the attack. ISPs tend to be oligopolies, so the government just has to acquire the data from a few ISPs before knowing everybody from that country who was connected to that IP. Additionally, the government can also analyse the IP and know that it doesn't belong to a big VPN company before making the request to the ISPs to give the data. If you're a serious threat, there may even be intergovernmental cooperation to try to find you. Using a big VPNs provides herd immunity unless you're a clown who connects to the VPN two minutes after you do something illegal and disconnect 30 seconds afterward, in which case you're still screwed. You can also trust more that big VPNs don't keep logs as many have been subpoenaed and/or audited. Your VPS or small VPN provider may not be as trustworthy. The best practice is to use a big VPN+Tor and to be connected to the VPN long before and after anything you don't want to be traced back to.

As for govts communicating with isps, yes, they can do and have done that, however, so have all the other big vpn companies that I know of lol. It all comes down to two things: do you trust your isp, and do you trust the person running the server you're sending the requests to. Tor is different in that you can use a bridge (so a first node that doesn't appear to be a tor server) to hide from your isp, and you don't really need to trust anyone at all if you just use .onion services. If you need to use an exit node, you just need to trust that whatever exit node it is isn't ran with bad intent. Now if you use a big vpn + tor, that's a huge red flag to the vpn co. and they could monitor you more closely for activities that aren't using tor. You said people should connect to a vpn long before they do stuff they don't want traced to them, but ironically that's about the worst thing you can do lol. You're telling your vpn provider "Hey, this is my ip address, email address, credit card, and phone number. I connect to tor, and I also visit (x, y, and z) a lot" They can use all that info to help de-anonymize you. That's also not even considering if your tor connection falters, or you accidentally go to a darknet site without using tor.
The ultimate solution for connecting to the internet without it being traced to you is, of course, tails, whonix, or a similar OS and using .onion services exclusively. Then your anonymity really isn't in danger of being revealed unless you yourself give it away. If you just want privacy from things like ad companies, find an isp and a vps provider that you trust and set up a vpn of your own, as seen in this vid

There's no substantial evidence to show that the major players are lying about their policies. Many have gone above and beyond to hide in favourable jurisdictions like Panama and BV Islands with lax policies. Many use advanced technologies like RAMDisk servers and have Warrant Canaries to show they haven't received any secret warrants, gag orders, etc. These VPNs would go bankrupt if they got caught lying, so there's literally no reason to lie. They don't have to legally keep logs, so they wouldn't for no reason when it could cost them their whole business.
On the other hand, VPS and ISPs will happily comply with law enforcement, many without even needing to be subpoenaed since they don't wanna deal with any legal costs. Yes, VPN companies have logs that you are their customer and that you paid for them, but that's another advantage of big VPNs: they have so many customers. If the government finds out someone from a big VPN did something illegal and asks for all customer records, they need to go through 10+ million users. For a small VPN, they need to go through way less people. Herd immunity for big VPNs.
Tor bridges don't work as well as you think. Eventually, all Tor bridges are identified as Tor nodes and replaced with new bridges. If you used a Tor bridge, you might not be caught right away, but the node will be identified and you can be caught later on if they cross reference your past data with newly identified Tor Bridges and find a match. Tails is actually not secure either because Tails doesn't use persistent guard nodes by default. This means that every time you open a session, you connect to a different entry node instead of remaining connected to the same entry node (guard node) for months. Tails not having this is a major security flaw. Whonix does use persistent guard nodes, but is also a VM OS, so you are at risk if your computer if your main OS has any software that allows someone to spy on it, so make sure that's not the case.
Either way, none of these can solve the correlation attack problem. People can correlate what you're doing based on the packets you send. Even without decrypting the packets you send, someone can analyse the timings of the packets to guess what you're doing. Watching a video looks different from browsing the internet for news, for example. Using a VPN instead of Tor makes you safer because the first people who'll be analysed this way are direct Tor users. Think about it. If the government sees that an illegal activity was traced back to a Tor exit node, who do you think they will look at first? All the people connected to a Tor node at the time or someone connected to a VPN? You can add some noise to your internet usage too over the VPN/Tor to make it harder to do an automated correlation attack and identify you.

Your better off just using tor, or making your own vpn, I make my own vpn it's super cheap to rent a vps, I setup my own and it's been much better than any of the other vpns I've used, mullvad is good too especially since they have Netflix support, but generally making your own vpn is way more trustable than some random overseas company, though most data centers keep some sort of logs and there's no getting around that so keep in mind.
Why would you use your own VPN? Firstly, as long as it's not in your household it's basically the same as using a VPN provider, secondly, you can be identified by your payment information by the server host
@@Cookiekeks : Depends what the VPN is for. If it's to hide a backtrace from some possible hackers, then you just need the contact info & payment info to not be tracked back to you personally. If it's to hide point-of-origin from e.g. an online video site, then renting a server to use for your own VPN can work for as long as noone sues for account info. If you're trying to hide activity from your national government, then your best bet may be to find some poorly policed spot with public wifi, splice some appropriate hardware into the bathroom lights above a common drop ceiling, and use TOR to hide the VPN.

If you're using monero, it shouldn't be.
Coinpayments don't require you to create an account, unless you want to get a refund, make a claim or some other stuff that require an account.
It's convenient for sellers because they have a instant crypto conversion feature, so merchants can avoid volatility with stablecoins, or just have it convert btc and other cryptos into Monero.
That being said, I think this feature requires KYC, so they probably have KYC implemented for themselves on that coinpayments.
