Seriously tho, I wouldnt want to name my son Oliver when I already know theres going to be 3 others his same age. We had two tylers growing up in my school who had both the same first name, same middle name AND same innitial starting their last name so for years in school neither of those boys were called by either of their given names and exclusively called by their last.

My parents wanted to call me Sören had I been a boy, and I've never liked that name, personally, so I was always happy to be a girl.

It’s always a lifetime consideration when naming a child, but for those interested in statistics or worried about how the name will be received in ten, twenty years, a list like this is very fascinating. The somewhat click-baiting title of ‘names to avoid’ is really more of joke than it is her actual opinion- as she says at the beginning of the video, one of the names on this list is her child’s name. It’s just a fascinating bit of fun.

I think one of the fun/interesting things about more “traditional” names going out of style is that in five or ten years, naming your child something super traditional like Robert, Mary, Peter, or Anne will seem like a bold and edgy choice. I wouldn’t be surprised if within the decade there’s a swing back in popularity for more old-school traditional names that our parents had. Because if you named your daughter Mary right now, she’d almost certainly be the only one in her class.

I'm gutted because all the names that I have loved over the years long before they became fashionable, all suddenly became fashionable and I feel like they have been tainted in a way. I agree with the comment that when they are overused you start to hear them differently, especially when you see them on kids that are the image you have of the name, it spoils it. How many teachers find that they cannot use a name because a child in their school has it, especially when that child is the one that all the teachers dread getting in their class

Yes, same for the Christian communities. Biblical names that have remained very popular in christian families (Elijah, Isaiah, Noah etc.) are very mainstream these days. Some cultures are offended when others use their religious/spiritual names when they are not affiliated with the community... Christians & Jews appear to be at peace with non-religious folks using names from their holy books.

I think it is just because people are getting tired of them, honestly. My children have DOZENS of friends named Caleb, Jackson, Hunter, Ethan, Logan etc. I know Jacob wasn't on the list but I know at least 15 Jacobs and Emilys. It's as though during that era people felt they had to choose from a very small pool of names, Michaela, Mikayla (etc) and Mackenzie being amongst them. I know dozens. I think that has led to the recent "unique" names, like Tinsley. IMHO, these will not age well. My daughter is
at the age now where all her acquaintances are beginning to have children. She is also a preschool teacher. Here are the trends we are seeing: Luna, Harley and Harley Quinn, Eleven, Magnolia, Violet, Aurelia, and all the "ley" names.
I asked my other daughter who teaches at the college level for contrast. She said she has a lot of Lauren, Cameron, Audrey, Aubrey, Gabrielle, Samantha, Amanda, Julia, Juliana, Eric, Noah students.

I’m definitely the type to knock a baby name off of my list once it’s on the top 1000 for girls and top 800 for boys or if i’ve heard of more than one person using it. Madison (-11) (because every other new mother's named Madison lol)
    Grace (-9)
    Riley (-8)
    Lily (-10)
Aubrey (-20) (maybe cause the doc "Audrey and Daisy" came out in 2016? Though Daisy jumped 20 points from 2016-17 so idk)
    Lillian (-9)
    Addison (-18)
    Boys-
    Jacob (-6)
    Michael (-6)
    Matthew (-8)
    David (-8)
    Gabriel (-12)
    Jayden (-8)
    Anthony (-8)

It's important to keep in mind that going down in the charts may only mean that different names are overtaking them in popularity, not that people find them outdated yet. Of course, as people mentioned, people are always looking for unique and different names so the top names will always change, but that doesn't mean the names that were previously the top are now unpopular, just not quite as popular. It seems that all of the names you mentioned are still super high in the charts!

I really enjoyed this list, SJ!! I think I’m one of a few people who DESPISE popular names- if a name is in the top 1,000 then I don’t want to use it (I’m not planning on having kids until I’m in my 30s and I’m currently in my mid-20s), but I guess I’m weird that way! I’m from the Deep South (Birmingham, AL) in the States and it’s really traditional here to name a daughter after the mother or the son after the father- it’s also REALLY traditional here to use the mom’s maiden name or a family surname as a first name for a girl (or a boy) and sometimes it can also be common to name a daughter after her dad (I know- super weird, but the girl names James, Murray, Sullivan, Collins, etc are names that came out of this!) So I guess some of those name choices might be why I love super duper unique names!!! Hugs! Been watching your lists since 2017!!
