If you are using smaller spindles and want to make a bigger skein would you join the singles or join after plying? Also what if your spindle can't hold the two rolls of yarn combined ?

Do all spindles need a notch? I was sold a spindle without a freaking notch in the side for the yarn to tuck so I can spin a little more vigorously!
