For all of you who have lived in California, and particularly in Northern California, this recording may be familiar. A public radio station, KPFA in Berkeley, with repeaters all over California, had a classical music show every Sunday morning hosted by Mary Berg. It ran from 4am to 8am. This duet was the theme song as long as I heard the show, I sometimes recorded it, and I heard it for years on line after I left California. Thank You Air Force. My family visited the Cathedral in Worms were Bach wrote a lot of his music. It was the middle of the afternoon on a week day and the organist was practicing. We quietly walked in and sat down. Our toddler son was even quiet. The sun was streaming through the stained glass, and the sound was incredible. It left an indelible impression that is reactivated every time I hear Bach, and this piece in particular.

To add to what Richard said, BWV 1-200 represents the sacred cantatas Bach wrote that still survive. I don’t know many of them including this one, but this was a great choice (I just now listened to the whole cantata). I need to get out of the Bach cantata rabbit hole now as I am working on a deadline for my work tomorrow, but I queued a few of them up for my daily commute this week:) Thank you, Richard. You always bring very enjoyable selections to the table!

You are welcome Brian. I always look forward to your requests. They inevitably open doors to music I don't know. This is one of the great things about "our channel"!

Vielen Dank! Thanks for this. I love JSB’s Cantate. The low strings should be Viole da Gamba, which have frets. Bring on the Baroque! I recommend anything by Purcell, especially those in English, like “Come Ye Sons of Art” written to celebrate the birthday of Queen Mary II.

BWV stands for Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis (BWV; lit. 'Bach works catalogue). It is a compilation of all known Bach works, It was first published in 1950, edited by Wolfgang Schmieder. The numbers are NOT chronological, but grouped by the type of the piece, I.E. all the cantatas are grouped together.

Some history of this piece and cantatas in general. It is a duet that is part of a cantata. Bach was required at one point in his career to compose 1 a week! Typically, they run about 15 to 25 minutes. They were written for small orchestra and choir. There would typically be a choral opening, then any of several different forms, this duet is an example, and then end with a chorale. I'm writing this from memory so feel free to correct me.

Great pick. Bach summarized everything that came before him and set the “rules “ for everything to follow in tonal western (occidental) music. And the original be-bopper. Check out the story of the 6 part ricercar he created extemporaneously for King Frederick of Prussia.

    Bach Rocked!
i went to high school with a keyboardist who was a member of the Bach Society for a few years. his favorite instrument was the clavinet, but he also played harpsichord and piano. it was a joy to hear him play.
before he passed away he went into the studio and recorded Bach's Goldberg Variations.
if anyone is interested, here it is: John Hartford Plays JS Bach's Goldberg Variations
    RIP: 1954 - 2011

my favorite piece that he did was Handel's Water Music, regrettably he never recorded it to my knowledge.

If you love Bach, then I can highly recommend the Netherlands Bach Society UA-cam channel. Nothing but the music of Bach, all played on period instruments.
