Abstract:
The Indian tradition of public debate goes back to the Vedic times. It involved different schools of thought, covered several areas such as philosophy, jurisprudence and medicine, and developed a distinct discipline of Vadshastra. This lecture traces the history of the tradition and analyzes the different forms of debate and their impact on India's intellectual life.
Bhikhu Parekh is Emeritus Professor of Political Philosophy at the Universities of Westminster and Hull and was earlier Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics. He is the author of nearly a dozen widely acclaimed books in political philosophy including Rethinking Multiculturalism and Gandhi. He has received many academic and public honours including Sir Isaiah Berlin Prize for Lifetime Contribution to Political Philosophy, BBC's Special Lifetime Achievement Award, Padma Bhushan and over a dozen honorary doctorates.
D.L. Sheth is Honorary Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies.
