We have a small bed of Mystic Spires Salvia that's near the neighborhood sidewalk. Early spring last year it was filled with native and honey bees, along with the smaller butterflies. By mid-May, the bumblebees showed up and didn't leave until well past Halloween. In early December, we had Monarch butterflies in the Mystics, and it was an amazing sight. People walking past the house were taking videos of the Monarchs. Many of them, including the children, had never seen them that close. Because of that, I have been extending our main bed next to the house this year to include some more Mystics, a dwarf butterfly bush (looking for a 2nd variety), and some Agastache. I've become bee and butterfly obsessed after last year's display.

I love the Mystic Spires. Mine were always busy with all sorts of pollinators last year and they are beautiful to look at too. I added a second one into my California Zone 8b/9a garden this year.🥰

Your garden is finally making sense.
I can see how you are allowing space for plants to grow to their best potential.
And having seasonal interest all year round.
I love how it is looking from all the different angles.
Im learning alot from every video now.
It would be lovely for you to draw a diagram of your different garden spaces with the plants you have now, and what type of soil and sun direction, so we can get some idea of what we can do in your garden rooms.
Loving these latest videos and learning a heck, Jo.

Ooooo! I love that black chair!!! Reminds me of summer evenings sitting in the backyard at my grandparents house, my parents and grandparents talking and visiting, my sister, brother and myself chasing lightening bugs. (fireflies) Mamaw and Papaw had those chairs, and a metal glider. Staying a week at a time with them on summer vacation, helping Mamaw shell peas into a metal bowl on that glider. 💕🌸💜 That tap they had way out near the garden with a metal ladle that hung there on a nail and you could just get yourself a little ladle full of ice cold well water. There was a sand track for my brothers gocart. You could get really hot in the North Carolina sun on a go cart! Maybe THAT explains my obsession with always having a variety of garden furniture!! There was a porch swing on the front porch, and rocking chairs. With the intoxicating scent of boxwoods and sweet bubby bush. I remember a Monster butterfly bush she had. And she made fresh biscuits and cornbread every day. The birds and squirrels got their breakfast from her hand in the mornings of the leftovers. Wow! That’s a lot from a simple black metal chair. ☺️

Working today to get bedding plants in the ground ahead of the promised rain tomorrow. Weeding out seedlings of unwanted (smilax, honeysuckle, Virginia creeper etc) plants then I will mulch. Knocking out little pockets of garden areas that were neglected in last summer’s heat and humidity. So far this has been a glorious spring.

    Such a pretty, pretty garden.
This is a silly comment but; the branch sticking out on the porch side of the Sugar Cookie Viburnum (right side, as I look at it) -- makes my pruning fingers itch. There must have been a horticulturally-sound reason you kept it on there, right?

The deciduous Azaleas are a little slow to get going and do require good siting but nothing sweeter. Blessed with a stand of the straight species, such a pretty pink and fragrant! Had the Wisteria and Ivy not encroached, they're would be many more. There's also Sweetshrub. Natives deserve more attention IMO, they're supposed to be here. We're about at the same 4 year mark, I'd better get busy!

I’ve planted English lavender from seed back in Jan and have potted them up to 4” pots. I’m trying to get them rooted well enough to pot into my garden. I live in zone 8A central Texas in the limestone hills northwest of Austin by Lake Buchanan. I’ve got salvias and celosias from seed to plant out as well. It gets incredibly hot and dry here in the summer so I’m hoping these will survive and bloom with minimal watering as water is at a premium in our area.

I have a number of different deciduous azalea cultivars in my garden. Great idea of re-gifting plants! I've done this with some of my houseplants in a neighborhood "free faire" that we have every year. I am also slowly realizing about the notion of "real estate" in one's yard, and making the best use of it. I had the same thing happen, that you had with your Japanese maple, with my 'Yuletide' camellia sasanqua, in that it looks like a deer took a big bite out of a side of it, or maybe it was rutting season and a buck got it's antlers stuck in it!

I found some plastic limb spacers (Stark Bros) to train and redirect the young flexible tree limbs that cross and rub. Do you ever use those? If I have to remove limbs, I will. But if I can train them away from each other and keep both limbs that's even better. What are your thoughts on that? Am I wasting my time with the spacers? Also, my landscaper has proposed 3 Azaleas for an upcoming project. We're in high deer pressure area and deer love azaleas. Perhaps he's recommending the new evergreen reblooming varieties, but I've read reports that say those are no safer from the deer than the older varieties. What are your thoughts on that? Thanks so much!! Your yard is coming together so nicely!
