The Blues Shuffle is the first bass line I learned, and the first one I teach my students. It can be played easily in any key and sounds good at fast, medium and slow tempos, making it one of the most versatile left hand patterns around! A MUST for any aspiring blues or boogie pianist.
I have also heard this left hand called the "chop" recently, although I am not sure where that started. Growing up we always called it the blues shuffle and I have never met another musician who called it the chop. (Just FYI)
I demonstrate how to play this left hand in the keys of C, F, G, E, A, B, Eb, Bb (0:08)
And then show how it will sound in the context of a song (2:06)

An oldie but a goody. One of the first left hand patterns I learnt, Always sounds great!
As always, I love listening to you. Reminds me of a time long ago. It makes my heart smile. 💗
Perhaps the most universal left hand in blues in my opinion. A bass pattern that will stick with you a lifetime and it usually always sound good whenever applicable. Also creates a basic element for learning more advanced bass patterns or variations.
Yep you nailed it!
That’s awesome.. left hand part is a piece of cake.. now teach me the jazzy right hand part Lol 🎹🎶
EXCELLENT!
Hey man... your videos are awesome.
Thank you Sandeco!
A must have bass line. With this you have the fundamentals to play any boogie woogie and blues left hand.
This was so helpful! Thank you very much!
Thank you Stefan!
This is the left hand pattern I play whenever a bass player joins for the jam. It does sound great. And the song at 2:06 reminded me of "When It Rains, It Really Pours", which was recorded by Elvis Presley. Great video! Greetings from Brazil.
Spot on! Thanks Robson
Hmm. It's making think long and hard about another piano. Love your music.
Nice , love the right hand there too
Thanks!
Do you have a lesson or transcription of the right hand melody? Or even similar ones?
@@jeffcornwell3679 thanks Jeff, no I do not.. sorry! It’s kind of based around the c major blues scale which I have 3 videos on called “lick #7”
@@thearthurmigliazza Thanks. I'll look those videos up.
Excellent! I'm up to lick 4 in the book so an incentive to keep moving to get up to page 66 :)
👍 Hey, this is 1st video I’m seeing from u. Love to see a teaching video of that whole thing. Left & right. Having trouble with what should be played same time. Maybe I’m thinking about it too much idk …
Thank you Cindy! Welcome. Sounds like you’ve got a little catching up to do 😊. Check out the “beginners portal” at schoolofboogie.com and go through that course. Then this will make a lot more sense 😊
I just bought this music. There’s no numbers. All music has numbers.
Michele I’m sorry but I don’t understand what you mean (in any of your 3 sentences). Please explain if you can.
Well....well....well....just found you...SUBSCRIBED OF COURSE.......just wanted to let you know...that....God made you with....SOUL.....and 10... pretty dang... good.... dancing fingers...!!!!....boy...oh...boy...that rhythm and music and vibrato and glorious expression.....inside of....YOU....is...ah....STUNNING....STUNNING....just like your child..!!!!
Thank you Liz!!
I think I may have to steal what you played at the end 😁😁😁
Have at it! 😁
@@thearthurmigliazza definitely 😁 it’s on my list for tomorrow 😁
It is so cool to hear this. I recently bought the book. I read that chapter and played that pattern. But I haven’t gotten any farther than that yet 😀
I need to find an easy song that uses that left hand pattern so I can practice it in context.
Thanks Rick! Each lick chapter has a transcription of how to put the lick with this left hand (found in part 1 of each lick). I would learn how to play the first 3 licks with that left hand first before learning a song. Then learn Chicken Shack as the first song. It also uses this left hand.
Gràcies!!
Thank you Arthur
Can you explain the right hand in a next vidéo ?
Thanks Christian, haha if I had known this would be so popular I would have demonstrated. I can show you the basics of it if you ask me when I’m live on Sunday at 1pm EST.
Thank you Arthur, i have the feeling that any demonstration from you is not immune to being popular.
See you soon and Thank you for you pedagogy and your kindness.
@@christianfouasse5540 Haha thank you Christian! Nice to hear this positive feedback :-)
A sheet music transcription of what I played at the end if you're interested

@@thearthurmigliazza Hey Arthur, the link doesn't work anymore 🙁
@@gio_gi that's crazy... let's try it again: ua-cam.com/video/bgNbVK2NPUY/v-deo.html
I literally YT searched "blues shuffle in C right hand part Arthur migliazza" and it came up. So if the link doesn't work try that approach and see if it works.
It's on the "blues boogie and classical" channel

Is it OK to use your Thumb for the V and VI instead of using Second Finger and Thumb ?
If you are starting out and don’t already know it, then I highly recommend this fingering. If you are already comfortable with the thumb covering both then no need to change it.
I actually find it hard to play the two baseline notes (1st & 5th, 1st & 6th) at the same time when swapping between index and thumb. One note hits before the other and I struggle to have both at the same time. Have you got any tips on how to achieve this?
Yes, just good old fashioned practice concentrating on getting them both to come down at the same time. No one can do it at first (play two notes simultaneously). Maybe some people practiced when they were young and don’t remember but it takes practice. Do it every day (literally) for 20 min and let me know in a week if you are still having trouble.
Slow motion.
And relax the shoulder.
I’ve been having a similar issue as well and I think I’ve made a habit of it without noticing. The two 5ths are not an issue but with the 6ths I tend to hit the 6th note twice, rather than playing simultaneously with the tonic note (in this case the C). I know I’m doing it and I can prevent but as soon as a bring 2 hands together my left hand naturally does it. I think it’s because my pinky is weaker so it’s difficult to keep it for a solid 4 beats. I’m worried I’ve trained by fingers to do the wrong thing! I think I’m going to need to slow down and practice again.
