Thank you so, SO, much for this. I've been looking all over the internet but I couldn't find a way to turn the Peaking Level on until I find your video. Now I can enjoy my Voightlander 40f1.4!
Thanks Jay. Appreciate the video tutorial. I got my NEX 6 more than a week ago and I am thinking of purchasing an adapter for my Canon L-series lenses. The tutorial helped a lot.
@ Michael Bell, Not sure why I can't reply to all the comments directly, but this is for you. The New Nex-7 replacement will be shipping in April, so if you need a camera for February, I would recommend the Nex-6. If you want much faster focus, but a much heaver larger camera, the A65 will do the job. The A65 is not near as good as the Nex-6 in High ISO abilities, so that is worth considering depending on your needs. Faster focus, more digital noise at higher ISO's. 24mp resolution is really nice though when the lighting is good. The Nex-6 is a much smaller package with pretty much the same if not better image quality do to the low light performance. The resolution is much less at 16mop though. You may want more resolution, not sure. The Nex-6 replacement looks like it will go for $1100-1200 US. I hope that helps! Jay
Thanks for the settings update!! I've had a few of the NEX-5N's and had no issue with the adapters but I just bought the NEX-6L today and almost returned it, that is... Until I just saw this tutorial!! Thanks alot for the info
Hi Normand and yes, you can use the Canon L Lenses on the Sony's w/ Metabones, but they do not work near as good as far as autofocus goes for both photos and for video when compared to the native Sony lenses. The AF works pretty good, don’t get me wrong, but you lose features like Eye-AF and the tracking abilities in video for example. Otherwise, for a APS-C telephoto you can go for the killer Sony E 70-350mm G OSS Lens (bhpho.to/2QWZwgm) I recently reviewed here (ua-cam.com/video/keQjVb3zH6s/v-deo.html), and grab the Sony A6500 which is currently $400 OFF (bhpho.to/2uns8BS)… Also, the Sony A7R III (bhpho.to/2P0XI1C) is an incredible camera with next level image quality for sure and for a full frame telephoto, I would recommend the FE 70-300mm G OSS Lens (bhpho.to/2veu9Rl) would be a good option for the value, but a higher quality option would be the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM Lens (bhpho.to/2IX3BP7) or FE 100-400mm GM OSS Lens (bhpho.to/2wgOfgX)...
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks for your honest opinion. I'm equipped with a 5D mark3 with good lens and an a6000 with some zeiss lens like 18-70mm F4. I want to upgrade but not sure which way to go.
Because it does. It's just the laws of physics and engineering optics. The older lenses your thinking of were not for digital, but more importantly had a much larger flange distance to sensor, So you need the relativity large adapters to space them out in order to use them. It is a size issue yes. The lens element needs to be close to keep the lens small, but that is where the challenge is. Moving it further away will solve the problem, but the lens will be twice the much larger as a result.
Hi Jay, forgot to say after watching and reading your reviews of the 18-200 (both old and new) and 55-210mm I went with the 55-210mm so can't wait to get it in a few days.
Sorry to hear that, but they had to change the mount at some point. Better now than later I say. To bad they didn't make the switch with the Nex-7!! By now we would have more flash units for sure. The HVL-F43AM does have TTL and it should work on the Nex-6 for sure with the correct adapter. Hopefully a new more reasonable flash will come out. Until then the Metz is a great alternative!!! Jay
Hello, No you will not be able to conrtol the aperture with a passive adapter. You may be able to use the LA-EA1 lens adapter though with that lens?? Is it an Alpha mount??
I brought a cheap adapter off ebay for £10 and the lens are the old OM (50 F1.8 & 35 F2.8) ones, I guess 70's/80's, they are really well made and very small which I love. I will take some photos with both and the kit and email them over to you to compare. Maybe I am expecting more!!
I just got the Nex 6 and the am axpecting the 24mm Zeiss prime as my own xmas present and everyday walkaround lens. but definitely want to look into trying some of the stuff you showed in your video with 3rd party lenses and adaptor. thank you for the great tutorial. :)
Great tutorial. Thank you. The set-up does look "ridiculous" but if it works... Two questions: - Is there one for Nikon lenses? - What do you think of the Sony adapter LAEA2? I tried it in a store but don't like the "shelf" at the bottom of the adapter. It interferes with my grip.
Thanks. I already have a full size DSLR but I find it too cumbersome to carry around. That's why I am considering a NEX-6. I wish they made the shelf on the LAEA2 a little more narrow, so it can still function as a stand, without getting in the way of your grip.
Thank you so much for this video! I recently purchased a Sigma 70-300mm and could not figure out how to get the camera to shoot the picture even after having release w/o lense enabled. I can finally take some good macro shots!
Go with a cheap RainbowImaging adapter like I got!! They work great and are only 25 bucks. The higher quality adapters are better made, but not necessary for a passive adapter in my opinion. Jay
Awesome!! Yes there are adapters for your Zeiss lenses!! Check out the description area of this video. I just added a link to an article that will point you in the right direction ;) Jay
I did when I first switched to Sony yes. I use my Nex-6 now ;) Still have the Canon for occasional pro work and I don't hide this fact. What is the problem with having multiple camera systems?
Excellent vid. Have been considering getting into photography for a while and may get the NEX-6 for my first DSLR. Since my point and shoot stopped working I'd been eyeing up a mid range Nixon/Canon but for the sake of £150 ish I'm more likely to carry this little Sony.
Hi Jay. Would you recommend a good macro lens (100mm +) and a suitable adapter for my Nex-6 camera? Do you have to reset the setup each time switching adapter?
How can you change the aperture then? Also, is there any cheap adapter for Sony NEX to mount Sony Alpha lenses that you can change the aperture with? Great video by the way!
Hi Jay, thanks for the reply, I have a few Canon EF lens just waiting for the Metabones adapter with AF to arrive so I can use them properly. I have brought a couple of old OM 50MM F1.8 and 35MM F2.8 off ebay cheap and loving them, the size is great and very sharp but I haven't noticed much difference in the image quality over the kit lens.
Do you have any experience using flash with legacy Canon lenses? Can you do TTL with Sony flashes or would it all be manual with the legacy Canon lenses?
I just changed "release w/o lens to enable, and things are fine. Now not being a camera pro I'm wondering if not doing the rest that you suggest will adversely affect the quality. I've written all you have said down but it is a lot to change for a quick shot with a different lens, mine being a Rokkor 50 mm. 1.4. Any thoughts?
I wouldn't change anything unless you feel comfortable. I was just showing you how to take advantage of the focus peaking features etc.. Thanks for the comments Bruce Ramsay
I can't thank you enough for this video.I have a Sony Nex 6 and some of my dads 70's lens which I hope to try and use but had no idea how to set up in the menu.I'm waiting for a £15 adaptor to arrive and will try a Carl Zeiss 50 mm lens.Looks like these adaptors vary from inexpensive to alot more expensive depending on what they can do and which lens they are compatible with. Do I have to change back all the settings when I go back to using the Sony lens? Thanks
Hi Paul and I'm glad the video has helped you and thanks for the comments/ question! No, you shouldn't have to change any settings back. The shoot without lens is really the only one that matters. On the newer cameras that is enabled by default, so just leave it on I would say... The focus assisting features like focus peaking you could turn off when not using manual focus of course... It's a lot of fun attaching those old school lenses to a modern day camera, let me tell ya!
Thanks.I now have a few adaptors and another one on order.Yes,my 50 mm vintage lens take good shots if one likes DOF and Bokeh background.Good for close ups.Takes a bit of time to get focused and the shot composed in ones eye but worth the effort. It would be a bit slow if one only has a short time to capture their shot before the subject moves thou.Apparently the longer focusing vintage zoom lens are not so good? Have you tried any thing with these older zoom lens in manual mode?
I have an nex 3 with a lens adapter. At the bottom is a flashing "MM"", meterin mode. Is there anyway to manually sadjust this or turn it off. Something i missed in the instructions?
Thank you for the tutorial Jay. I just got the camera myself, and beginning to understand how to work with it. I have an old Minolta Maxxum zoom xi 100-300mm lens. What adapter can I use for my NEX-6. Will the camera be able to set the aperture? The lens itself does not have a mechanical adjustment for aperture.
Hi, I hope you can answer my question, I have a Canon with EF-S mount lens, it is F/1.4, If I buy the cheapest Fotodiox adapter for canon EF-S lenses, can I shoot with my NEX at f/1.4? Thanks
Yes saocir the Nex-6 will work at with the cheap lens adapter and your f/1.4 lens. The max shutter speed of the Nex-6 is 1/4000sec, so that might give you some issues in bright light, but other than that smooth sailing!
hi, thanks for the reply, I'm sure going to buy one now, I also came up with this adapter browsing the fotodiox website, it suppose to have all the automated functions, are you planning to review this one? I have been looking for a review online but couldn't find anything. Here is the link www.fotodioxpro.com/lens-mount-adapters/mirrorless-dslr/sony-nex-e-mount-lens-adapters/pro-lens-mount-adapter-canon-eos-ef-ef-s-mount-lens-to-sony-alpha-nex-e-mount-camera-automatic.html thanks.
mark shirley It gets Multiplied by the sensor crop factor unless it's a full frame camera. So for the Nex-6 or A6000 we would have 50mm X 1.5x = 75mm.Jay
Jay, i was looking at the 2 Sony adapters - I like the size of the smaller one but it was not so good in auto focus compared to the larger one - it was just fast - I tried an Alpha lens and a Tamron lens for Sony - what is the main diff between the two - like the smaller size. Is there an adapter for Nikon that has electronics - or auto focus's -
Jay, i'm using a sony nex6 with a novoflex adapter. I've made the changes you listed but how do I control exposure? I have a Nikon 500mm fixed f8. can I assign the f stop? my D800 lets me set that, but I can't find a way to do it on the sony. what mode is best to shoot in with the adapter? thanks so much.
Hi, great video. This is really helpful. I also like your enthusiasm- it is inspiring for those of us just getting into photography! Just a quick Q, which external mic would you recommend for the nex6 given there is no mic jack? Appreciate your help. Thanks.
Would it be insane for me to compare the NEX6 vs the t4i? I'm wanting a quality camera for under $1000. I'll be doing mostly video, but also taking pictures obviously. It'll be about a 60/40 split. Thanks for your input.
Hi Jay. What lens would you recommend to replace the SELP1650? I mean something with approx the same focal range and price. A few more questions. If I use anything other than the SELP1650, will it have to be manual focus only? And will the anti-shake and twilight hand-held functions work with the alternative lenses? Can the NEX-6 do TTL flash? Thanks for answering!
Hi! This is such a great video! I have the Sony nex 5r and I was wondering which lense and adapter you would recommend for video making on UA-cam! I make short beauty/ lifestyle videos and I was wondering which lenses you recommend. I am really new to the camera vocabulary and so it's kinda hard for me to understand all of the terminology used. Anyways, I really like how videos have a blurry background and focuses on a subject. It would really help me a lot if you could give me a list of lenses and adapters that are the best for filming! Thank you so much!!!
I need some help please. Just bought a Sony A3000 (E mount) without lenses. I own auto focus Sigma lenses from 1995 that work great. Use them on my, get this 1991 Canon EOS Rebel S. What adapter do I buy so the AF Sigma lenses work on the new Sony A3000? Please help.
Victor Kharchenko The Metabones Electronic IV Lens adapter might work, but I honestly don't know if the older sigma lenses are supported. That is the correct adapter though: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1054790-REG/metabones_mb_ef_e_bm4_canon_ef_lens_to.html/BI/7257/KBID/7777/DFF/d10-v21-t1-x531036
Hey need some advice with adapters and lenses, want some extra reach for my nex6 I have the 18-200mm, but would like better moon and wildlife shots, I'm looking to get a Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 USM lens for this, will this be too big? And what adapter ? Also is manual focus going to be too hard at 300mm? Cheers
Interesting. At least for prime lenses, why didn't sony allow for manually setting the Aperture value of the lens. It is such an obvious and easy thing to do. At least you will have that info in the exif data. I assume all the exif data is available (except aperture) on the NEX-6.
Hi, can you please recommand any 50 or 55 mm prime lens from other manufacturer i can use with an adapter and don't exceed 60 dollars or so ? Is using old SLR lenses such as minolta's will do fine ? How about the image quality ? Big thanks
Hi Jay, great video. Just a quick question, I have an SLT A57 which I am thinking of putting on a Sony NEX 6 (hoping to buy). You mentioned in your video that you have to manually focus. Does this mean that once you add another lens to the NEX 6 that he can't be used in auto mode?? I love auto.....thanks Shelley :)
Hey Jay, got a question about adapters: is there any adapters from A-mount to E-mount that makes lenses wider by 0.7 (for example like metabones speedbooster) but keeps an AF? Because speedbooster doesn't support AF and LE-EA doesn't make lenses wider :(
Hi Please recommend me and lens adapter for NEX 6L to Canon EOS series lenses, there are so many different manufacturers on ebay but I would like your advise
Hi Jay. Hiw are you? I have a sony nex6.. i bought a promaster aspericical af 28-210mm lens. I'm try to find a mount to connect the lens to my camera. I bought a sony emount to a nikon lens and it doesn't work. Can you please help suggest a mount that would work for my camera. Thank you for your time and help. Sherry
mark shirley I would need to know the exact mount type, then "that to Sony E-Mount" would be the search: www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=as_li_qf_sp_sr_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&index=aps&keywords=nikon%20to%20sony%20e-mount&linkCode=as2&tag=jhvitu-20&linkId=XDSHX4AZX2VWVCIQ
I don't understand why everybody says that a closer flange-to-sensor distance makes the optical design harder (not a rhetorical question, I actually don't understand). Shouldn't this only open up the design space by allowing closer placement of the final lens element if needed? It doesn't necessitate a closer distance. Is it just a size issue (i.e. placing the final element far from the sensor makes for an awkwardly long lens)?
You can't change the aperture with canon lenses on the nex and don't have image stabilization neither in the lens cause you loose that automation or in the body, because the nex hasn't got that. So why would you get an expansive canon f2 lens for the nex? By the way I still love my little nex camera.
+Chgo Guy Yes, you will need an hot shoe flash in order to get high enough over the lens. You can also bounce off the ceiling with the hot shoe flashes and that will really make the photos look 10x better when flash is involved. A great affordable option is the HVL-F20M: amzn.to/1MTZITh I hope that helps, Jay
thank you, that's what i thought... to have the flash higher... some of these external flashes are a not cheap... :( my photographer friends also suggested Yongnuo. thoughts? :)
Those are one of the best and what I also recommend to folks and personally own.. Hoya and Tiffen make decent filters that are much more affordable, but you do get what you pay for. Remember you are putting glass in front of your lens effectively adding another layer the sensor must see thru...
Hi Jay, love your videos; very informative. I saw on the alphalabs forum that you've used the minolta beer can lens with a lens mount - which mount do you use? I've just discovered a pile of old minolta AF lenses in my attic - and I'm pretty excited to try them. It looks like I can use the LA-EA1 with them, but I don't wanna spend £100+ and find out that I can't!
Yes, but not that many due to the distance between the lens mount and the sensor. The Nex style cameras have a very small distance (18mm) between the sensor and lens mount which allows for many adapters! Every manufacture uses a different sensor to lens mount distance. Sony went with 18mm for maximum adaptability versatility ;) Nischith Es
+Chalitha Samarasekara No, not with passive adapters like I was using in this video. Only with the electronic lens adapters will you have AF and non Sony lenses. The Metabones for the Canon EF lenses is what I use these days: amzn.to/1L1ArUl
By Nixon I meant Nikon obviously. The logic I suppose is that a touch screen and GPS are only consumer features but it still surprises me Sony doesnt put them on a NEX 6/7.
Thank you so, SO, much for this. I've been looking all over the internet but I couldn't find a way to turn the Peaking Level on until I find your video. Now I can enjoy my Voightlander 40f1.4!

Yes, Pal is the Europe standard for video and uses different frame rates than the USA ;)

I have been looking for a review online but couldn't find anything. Here is the link www.fotodioxpro.com/lens-mount-adapters/mirrorless-dslr/sony-nex-e-mount-lens-adapters/pro-lens-mount-adapter-canon-eos-ef-ef-s-mount-lens-to-sony-alpha-nex-e-mount-camera-automatic.html
thanks.
That looks like a great deal saocir I have not used it, so can't vouch for the quality or performance though.
Jay I'm trying to find this online but what happens to the focal length of a 50mm 'fx' lens.
mark shirley It gets Multiplied by the sensor crop factor unless it's a full frame camera. So for the Nex-6 or A6000 we would have 50mm X 1.5x = 75mm.Jay
again thanks - just looking on my google+ account I didn't realise I'd asked so many questions - cheers
They won't work with ttl. You can fire them remotely with a trigger transmitter and receiver though most likely.
If you are going to take long time shooting i would choose t4i, but the image quality is better on the nex 6 :)
Jay, i was looking at the 2 Sony adapters - I like the size of the smaller one but it was not so good in auto focus compared to the larger one - it was just fast - I tried an Alpha lens and a Tamron lens for Sony - what is the main diff between the two - like the smaller size.
Is there an adapter for Nikon that has electronics - or auto focus's -
What setting do you need to change when using manual focus lenses when the message says "no lens mounted"? Thanks
Look for the Shutter release without lens attached setting ;)
Sure can!!
I would highly recommend considering the Nex-6 ;)
Jay
+ForeverChristinee The power zoom kit lens is great for video.
I think the 23mm f/1.8 with the LA-EA2 adapter would be faster. Not by that much though ;)
I need some help please. Just bought a Sony A3000 (E mount) without lenses. I own auto focus Sigma lenses from 1995 that work great. Use them on my, get this 1991 Canon EOS Rebel S. What adapter do I buy so the AF Sigma lenses work on the new Sony A3000? Please help.
Victor Kharchenko The Metabones Electronic IV Lens adapter might work, but I honestly don't know if the older sigma lenses are supported. That is the correct adapter though: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1054790-REG/metabones_mb_ef_e_bm4_canon_ef_lens_to.html/BI/7257/KBID/7777/DFF/d10-v21-t1-x531036
***** Thank you very much for such a fast response.
When you use manual focus+manual aperture lenses, do you need to set the shutterspeed manually? Or does it change automatically?
If your using aperture priority mode the shutter speed will change automatically Matthijs Mackaay
Yes!
You very welcome Alf!!
Super. Thanks
Hi Jay, I have a Sony A57, is their a lens adapter for my canon lenses? 70-200 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 50 1.8
and will my Sigma 50 1.4 work?
Hey Jay, got a question about adapters: is there any adapters from A-mount to E-mount that makes lenses wider by 0.7 (for example like metabones speedbooster) but keeps an AF? Because speedbooster doesn't support AF and LE-EA doesn't make lenses wider :(
Hi Please recommend me and lens adapter for NEX 6L to Canon EOS series lenses, there are so many different manufacturers on ebay but I would like your advise
Where can I buy the lens adapters at?
Sherry
What brand is the promaster lens made for? It seam like the adapter you got should work if it's for a nikon
Thanks Jay - I want to use my full frame lenses from Nikon 700 on a Sony NEX 5n what lens adapter would you recommend.
mark shirley I would need to know the exact mount type, then "that to Sony E-Mount" would be the search: www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=as_li_qf_sp_sr_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&index=aps&keywords=nikon%20to%20sony%20e-mount&linkCode=as2&tag=jhvitu-20&linkId=XDSHX4AZX2VWVCIQ
Thanks - much appreciated :-)
They have the letter 'D' on the lens and are Nikon autofocus lens's I use on my D700
can you use this adapter on a sony nex f3?
Hi Jay, thanks for the quick reply, would like to see that when you can. Cheers Lee
ok but when i use a flash a shadow on lower left appears (with 18-105mm lens); how do I avoid that? external flash you'd recommend?
+Chgo Guy Yes, you will need an hot shoe flash in order to get high enough over the lens. You can also bounce off the ceiling with the hot shoe flashes and that will really make the photos look 10x better when flash is involved. A great affordable option is the HVL-F20M: amzn.to/1MTZITh
I hope that helps,
Jay
thank you, that's what i thought... to have the flash higher... some of these external flashes are a not cheap... :( my photographer friends also suggested Yongnuo. thoughts? :)
I would not get an aftermarket no name unit personally, but I have heard great things about Metz...
thank you again, my friend also suggested B+W filters any suggestion on more affordable filters? :)
Those are one of the best and what I also recommend to folks and personally own.. Hoya and Tiffen make decent filters that are much more affordable, but you do get what you pay for. Remember you are putting glass in front of your lens effectively adding another layer the sensor must see thru...
how do you change the aperture for the canon ef lenses ?
You can't unless you have an electronic lens adapter like this one: bhpho.to/2ftOH4K
Yes they do ;)
Zoom H1 and then if you want use the Rode Videomic Pro with it and you will get superb audio. Look for the set up on youtube.
Very useful video... :) Thanks ;)
Yeah, 5-series feature only I guess. I never use it myself.
Jay
Hi Jay, love your videos; very informative. I saw on the alphalabs forum that you've used the minolta beer can lens with a lens mount - which mount do you use? I've just discovered a pile of old minolta AF lenses in my attic - and I'm pretty excited to try them. It looks like I can use the LA-EA1 with them, but I don't wanna spend £100+ and find out that I can't!
What is the crop factor with a nikon lens to a sony nex body?
+ILoveCheese The crop factor doesn't change, it is sensor related so it will still be 1.5 crop
is there lens adapters for a65..???
Yes, but not that many due to the distance between the lens mount and the sensor. The Nex style cameras have a very small distance (18mm) between the sensor and lens mount which allows for many adapters! Every manufacture uses a different sensor to lens mount distance. Sony went with 18mm for maximum adaptability versatility ;) Nischith Es
Cant I use Autofocus mode in sony camera when i using the lense adapter
+Chalitha Samarasekara No, not with passive adapters like I was using in this video. Only with the electronic lens adapters will you have AF and non Sony lenses. The Metabones for the Canon EF lenses is what I use these days: amzn.to/1L1ArUl
thank you sir..
Nex-6!!
Thank you.
can I do the same with my sony alpha a3000
Yes you can mrxXxkink
By Nixon I meant Nikon obviously. The logic I suppose is that a touch screen and GPS are only consumer features but it still surprises me Sony doesnt put them on a NEX 6/7.
