    The reason Gordon ( or even Nicky Ryan) has nothing bad to say to Mo is because he has been good to them in the period of the pandemic and the recent ADCC. It's quite easy to track back the posts on IG to verify that. Plus Mo is giving 100% leverage to Gordon so he will not spit in the soup. But that doesn't mean Gordon is doing a favor to the sport or the community by protecting Mo from criticism, he is protecting is own leverage.
    The hero that was made to save the sport that ought to be Gordon ( according to John Danaher in an interview with Ben Askren) is really Craig in the end. He is the only one criticizing the sport at all scales. From the little Guru instructor abusing the students to the low pay and low popularity of JJ or rulesets that hinder the growth of JJ, Craig is the one actively doing something about it, behind all the clickbait gay jokes and whatnot.
    If Mo doesn't take a stand to help these athletes who compromise full time their body to make that sport popular, Craig is doing something with the "BDCC". It's hilarious but i hope it succeeds.
    Picture this : Satoshi Ishi was saying that he was paid and covered medically for being a judoka full time when he was in Japan. But if you are an JJ world champion, you can barely afford to pay for your surgery in the US.
    So really one should ask themselves : on what healthy bases are we hoping to help this sports grow?

      I fully appreciate your line of reasoning, but judo is an olympic sport that has national funding. And JAPAN?! There isn't ANYWHERE that level of institutional support for bjj. I agree it would be great if we get to that point, but as of now, bjj is a purely private sport driven by love. The consequence of this is that there is minimal money available. Craig has valid criticisms but he's focused on the here-and-now while Mo is focused on the future.

      @@aplus1080 you never get funding overnight. You get by making the sport grow and being popular & exciting. And eventually, down the line you might get funded or sponsored or whatever. But if you keep paying 10,000 bucks the winner regardless of the growth and revenue, you pretend to help and hinder the very people that make up the event. Craig didn't just criticize :
      CJI is on, you are paid $10,001 to participate, you leave with a million if you win. Tackett is participating and I can easily imagine everyone leaving out ADCC behind until Mo is forced to make serious adjustments. That's a real good move in the right direction for the future Not what Mo does

These are essentially the best professional BJJ athletes on earth and there is not that many of them and 99 percent of them get paid nothing. The argument of the reward for ADCC being down the line is stupid. This is the same thing as people saying they will pay for an artists work with exposure. The payout might be down the line, but you have bills now.
    And the comparison to the Olympics is also a bad one. Athletes competing there have huge government support and it's basically treated like a full time job. They may not be set for life, but they are taken care of during their term.

    • @aplus1080
      @aplus1080 5 місяців тому

      Down the line is not stupid. There isn't money to have 1) legitimate exposure and 2) give the athletes big paydays. There are competing costs. Gordon has said for years that the athletes need to do their part to expose themselves and Craig has been exposing himself for years now. But STILL, the money just isn't there. Craig's primary criticism of ADCC is that they chose the wrong venue and could've used that money to pay the athletes more. That's a pretty weak criticism and really does reflect the gap between short v long-term thinking.

      @@aplus1080 competitive hotdog eating pays out more money than winning ADCC worlds. Are you seriously arguing that that's more popular and there's more money in that than BJJ? Grappling is not big enough like mma. Adcc is not a league. Theres no belts being put on the line constantly. There's no championship fights all year long for different weight categories. It's one tournament. Agreed the organizers could pay the fighters more if their margins are in the green. But they won't pay anything comparable to a league sport. It's not the same as a league sport that plays anywhere from 20-150 games a year with billion dollar TV deals. Billions in sponsors. Constant exposure and marketing opportunities. Unions and cba's.
      Comparing grappling even to the ufc doesn't make sense. Very different. Dana is right about fighter pay. Either youre good enough to be here year after year or you're not. Just making the ufc roster doesn't mean you made it and should be taken care of financially no matter what. Win fights or someone else will. Fans need to connect with fighters emotionally because only a tiny percentage of fans watching mma actually understand what's happening technically(Danaher quote). There are too many martial arts being used in mma who understands all of that. Even coaches understand only the martial art they teach and not every martial art in use. Boxing coach understands combat Sambo?? Ufc needs characters or its dead. Fights alone with no drama are not appealing enough to everyday people.
      Grappling matches alone are a boring spectator sport. I'm sorry but it's true. Especially when the fighters decide to not engage until the very end. Different rules for different tourneys. Not exciting enough. Not drama filled. That 15 minutes to pass guard was so exciting and spectacular. NOT. It's too slow and technical.
      Unless Craig is planning on holding monthly tournaments that pay a 10,001 show up fee rather then holding a one off tourney proves nothing in my eyes. A couple people will get a big payday. If you're injured then kick rocks. So sorry. Not that many people will make money from it. It does nothing to increase fighter pay, all it proves is someone can hold a 1 time event with the right sponsors.

    Gordon saying that the legacy and post-adcc pay is worth more than just the payout for the event is all fine. Without all their combined effort the event is worthless, they should be paid accordingly.

    Great video. More a tangent on the argument that Craig Jones somehow "owes" ADCC, I do feel like a lot of people forget that EBI was a large reason why the original DDS crew became so popular. Gary Tonon was a frequent grappler in major BJJ competitions, but EBI being submission only, and allowing leg locks, completely upended the BJJ competitive landscape when it came to viewership. He became an overnight sensation, then Gordan became famous after he stepped in for Gary and submitted Yuri Simoes who had just won ADCC. Gordon then went on to submit Keenan Cornelius in a no timelimit match and became redhot. Though Craig did gain notority for submitting Leondro Lo, he stardom really broke out when he almost submitted Gordan Ryan with an armbar at EBI.

    I predict the demise of ADCC as grappling's most prestigious event if those in charge continue to simply exploit their athletes. ADCC is the Olympics of grappling sport not only because it is the most prestigious but also because you can't get anything other than the medal and a lot of fame. Let's be honest, the idea that all grappling sports can compete against each other is great, but since only BJJ is represented and all other grappling disciplines don't even bother to compete, I think it's easy to get the position that ADCC currently has quickly to lose and be forgotten. I believe that leagues like PGF or WNO or ONE are the Future. This isnt some Onetime Event a year, its constant entertainment.
