    i3 would be a nice replacement for Frankenstein - at the very least you would be able to drive 150km without worrying about finding a Chademo charger. A degradation test would be good because it would also be some guidance for Mini Cooper S E owners as both cars share the same running gear but Mini is conventional steel body and I3 is Carbon Fibre “space frame” type construction. Also both cars have instruction from BMW to always let the BMS handle the charging and to go to 100% every time………

    I think your videos with older cars (like the Geilo test, but also zero mile and degradation) will be very important in the future when the market for used EVs will be growing. Right now, the choice is quite limited in 5-9yo cars category, leaf 1, TMS, Ioniq, Zoe, i3 and triplets, and that is pretty much all but in 1-2 years a lot of other mass-market cars will enter the group TM3, Niro, Kona, Leaf 2, MEB cars (mostly ID-3) etc. And those test will be important for people from for example Western Europe (e.g. Poland) where people buy mostly used cars from Germany, France, and Norway (most Leafs 1 on Polish roads actually comes from Norway :) )

    • @freddydad1

      Agree, i think that testing new cars will become irrelevant, the biggest market will become used, as these cars filter down how much impact will degradation have?

      @broderwow 7 місяців тому +4

      @@freddydad1 I do not know if it will be the biggest, I think testing new cars is still important but the aftermarket will grow very fast in the next few years and since the most knowledge about degradation comes from extreme cases of taxi drivers or... leaf 1 people think that 8-10yo cars will be useless...
      Yet another think will be manufacturer approach to used batteries i.e. if they will be buying them back to regenerate them and put in lower tier cars to lower the cost.... we will see :)

      Older Leafs suffer because they are CHAdeMO and they are getting rarer as networks like Ionity and Tesla don't bother with them. As the older chargers get replaced-it may be harder to find chargers while on the move.

    Hi Björn, it would be very interesting to do a degradation test on this i3. I own an i3s from the same year (2019) with 50k kilometers on the clock. It does not show any signs of degradation yet, but it would be great to have an idea on how well the battery is holding up. Keep up the great work - I love your channel, man!

      I have a more ancient one.. 2016, 176,000km. Mine is the REX version (33kWh) but I'm guessing it doesn't make that much difference. I drive it well over 90% electric.
      I'm planning to do a degradation test on it myself and it would be really nice to have this comparison.

    • @pilotandthecity8527
      @pilotandthecity8527 7 місяців тому +1

      @@bjornnyland slightly negative about the car in this initial response. And I think it's even not right in this case. The battery has a big buffer. By doing this, you'll never stretch the battery to the max (concerning upper and lower buffer). It's not about hiding, it's about taking care of a battery in a smart way. My humble opinion on this ;)

    • @clausvandenbrink7955
      @clausvandenbrink7955 3 місяці тому

      I suspect most batteries from same period of build are pretty similar in degradation when the 20-80% buffers are the same size. But of course buffers aren't the same which can make a difference. Still think many modern ev's are capable to do over 200.000 km.

    Dont laugh about the skinny but efficient and economical tires. Nowdays fat low profiles is a stupid and expensive fashion.

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc 7 місяців тому +3

      Yep, exactly right. On top of that, modern big diameter rims are totally unecessary and a net drawback to most drivers as well. This car should have had 14" or 15" inch rims on top of the skinny tires if it wasnt for looks.

    • @SteveLoughran
      @SteveLoughran 7 місяців тому +1

      Low profile tyres make a very expensive noise when you park badly-my new car went back to classic tyre profile, even though "crossover" still means oversized wheels taking more trunk space

    • @SteveLoughran
      @SteveLoughran 7 місяців тому +3

      Fat tyres do have better acceleration, cornering friction and braking- but they do acquaplane more easily if you let the tread wear....

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc 7 місяців тому +1

      @@SteveLoughran You are quite right, but the difference in those areas where they have an advantage is so small as to be dwarfed by lots of other factors, and certainly isnt very interesting and couldnt even be identified by the average motorist on an average road.

    • @SteveLoughran
      @SteveLoughran 7 місяців тому

      @@GoldenCroc I'd say the tendency to plane is more significant, but it's no new -my wife's Ml II Golf GTi liked to do that and I've managed to scare myself once too on a Belgian autoroute. But tread depth is the dominant factor: check up on tyre depth before the rainy season begins and make sure all is well. Apparently Teslas have a bit of a problem there -either due to people accelerating aggressively or just because of the weight of the vehicles when braking. Which, if true, means the EVs which use battery size to give the range their customers think they need (hello Audi SQS etron Q8) are going to be even worse. We shall see

    I had the 33 Kwh i3 and after 4 years and 143,000 Kms it still showed 29.5 Kwh available the same as when I got it at 9 months old and 9,000 Kms. Very impressive.
    It would be interesting to know the battery degradation on the 44 Kwh.
    My id3 82 Kwh had 73.6 Usable Kwh when new now it has 71.5 Kwh or roughly 2% degradation after 2 years and 67,000 Kms but I take that with a pinch of salt as the id3 rarely sees close to a full charge discharge cycle and the BMS probably isn't fully calibrated, last night was the first time it reached 10% in the 2 years I own it, I ran it low to test fast charging on 3.2 software and saw max 87 Kw after about 10 mins plugged in, it started at 75 Kw possible it warmed the battery though I didn't monitor that in the beginning. I did see that battery temp at the end was around 32 deg C, this was plugged in from 10-42% got 22 Kwh in 17 mins, not fantastic.

    I have one of these (2016, 33kWh REX, 176,000km).
    My suggestion for an extra test is how the skinny tyres perform on a skid pan - or a Moose Test. (My gut feel from having driven mine for a couple of years is that its Moose Test would be pretty poor - especially in the wet.)

      1. It doesn't have radar so ACC will very often fail in low sun or when leaving tunnels.
      2. Running heater while charging will overheat the battery.
      3. Skinny tires makes the car unstable already at only 120 km/h.
      4. Trunk space us a joke compared to many other cars in same size. Reason for it is that below the trunk, there's a placeholder for rex engine even in BEV models.
      5. Suicide doors are very impractical if you only need to open the rear door.
      6. Car is quite overpriced compared to what you get.
      7. Frunk is not dust or water sealed.
      But other than that, the car is nice.

      @@bjornnyland Suicide doors also means massive A pillars and blind spots which is a bummer in a city car. @@bjornnyland thanks for
      The answer. Don't be surprised: I bought an i3S back after driving an id4 for 2 years. Point 3 is solved with the i3S, point 4 is better with the Wokeby trunk extension, and they have also the solution for your nr7 point. I love the car and , probably you won't understand, I even cancelled the order for a Tesla M3 after driving it again for some while. It's one of a kind. You love it, or hate it. I can't explain, it's against many reasonable expectations, but I prefer this car above many others. I'll keep driving it. ( and at least and for sure, the ergonomics are better than the Boeing 737 I'm flying. ;) . Even the automation is at a higher level. It's probably all about the expectations. At a last point. Parking a car at an airport is a nightmare. Normally they won't get nicer there. This one will stay free from many scratches and bumps because of the carbon reinforced plastics used as panels. Your point of the suicide doors I don't share. With small kids they are very practical. It's easy to get the kids seat in, and they are in save inside as in a 2/3 doors car. I never heard an issue about 2 doors cars. You can always find negative points, but also focus on the bright side. For instance material use and eco footprint of this car. It's massive smaller than an average Tesla ;)

      @@elliots4370 the regen is adjustable with the "gas/electric" pedal. It works perfectly. The "a" pillars are not bigger as usual. It's possible to skip the "b" pillars, because they used a carbon fibre chassis. It's much stronger than a conventional steel chassis and very light at the same time.

    On hamstering and beeping: I believe any car should give a warning when the car in operation state ("ignition on", "drive mode"), and you open a door. The risk is that the car drives away whilst a person might get in to or out of the car. The solution: switch off the car. The beeping will be gone then.

      @@o00scorpion00o They all used Samsung sdi prismatic cells, 6000 cycles to 20% degradation, 30 year pack life. They do not show a pack degradation by age chart.
      At 143,000 km:
      1st Gen 21.40 kWh with 110km range would be: 143,000 odometer / 110km range = 1300 cycles = 5% degradation
      2nd Gen 33.77 kWh with 166km range would be: 143,000 odometer / 166km range = 861 cycles = 2% to 3% degradation
      At 6000 cycles to 20% degradation the mileage would be:
      1st Gen 110km x 6000 = 660,000 km for the 21.40 kWh pack
      2nd Gen 166km x 6000 = 996,000 km for the 33.77 kWh pack

      The 1st gen didn't fair so well though just like the first gen Leaf. They were different cells.

      I was looking around and apparently the 2019 28kwh has BlueLink in the US. Although it's not that necessary if you're camping in the car for 5 minute charging stops like Bjorn. Stupidly enough, it wasn't added for Canada, where 1st Gen Korean EVs have a cult following. The lowest trim of the classic has heated REAR seats, rear HVAC vents and blindspot warning included, all of which they removed from the base 2020 model! weird cost cutting for a 35k CAD sub-300km commuter. Hopefully the degredation tests can at least give me confidence in a high-mileage battery.

    I call this BMW I3 car the EV hater. Anyone in a BMW showroom looking at this EV would think this is not the FUTURE. I think BMW made this odd useless car to sell more ICE cars. There is so much wrong with the design and engineering if just makes me laugh. All the development money spent for this???? Tesla for the win
