  • On the quest for the perfect sound mangling module, the elusive Miso Cornflakes caught my eye. I can't help myself, but am always curious about granular synthesis modules, and I guess the harmonize and diffuse knobs added to the intrigue in this case.
There was also something about the design that spoke to me, so when I saw it on sale at Perfect Circuit, I just couldn't resist. I was visiting family in Mexico, and the attempted purchase actually blocked my credit card. Nevertheless, I persevered and had it waiting for me when I got back from my trip.
So I have only played with it without RTFM, which is the way you SHOULD interact with most modules because yes.
So the first thing that is crystal clear is the sound quality (pun intended). Very impressed by that. The other thing is that the knobs feel very much in control of the sound. That is not to say that that is not the case with all modules, but compared, say to Mutable Instruments BEADS, it somehow feels more precise. In all fairness, once you get used to BEADS it is quite easy to dial in specific settings...
But hold on a minute, what is this??? No wet / dry control ?!?!?! This is right now incomprehensible to me, and I never even thought to verify whether or not you could do this. I guess so much for my not RTFM....
So basically you cannot have your granular sampling active but only letting through the dry signal, and what is worse, you cannot set the volume level of the grains within the module itself.... unless I am missing something or there has been a firmware update...
So for this patch, I basically had to duplicate the left and right channel, and send a Cornflakes free signal to the Intellijel QUAD VCA, and then send another copy through MISO Cornflakes and back to the UQD VCA to use it as a mixer fro my wet dry levels... yes, this works but it takes a lot of extra patching for something that you would think would be a basic function of the module itself. But instead of being pissed off, you should use limitations as creative constraints. So I am going to try that out for a while and maybe I will see the logic that the module designer saw... other than that, it is a pretty cool module...
As to how it compares to BEADS, well, BEADS does way more, for sure, but the feel is very different, and I guess CORNFLAKES is more of a sampler, but all of this is slippery limits of concepts.
What I will say, is that I am very happy with how this track turned out. Need to work with this module more.
I have to say, even though I am kind of doing the same thing on the Endless Processor, it still remains an inspiration machine. Great module.
