Nonbinary Transition: How Many Genders Are There?

- How many genders are there? Conservatives are always asking the left how many genders there are because they don’t know! That’s because only I know how many genders there are. And if you watch this video about nonbinary transition, the discourse around it, the difficulties and complexities of it, and the ways it works, I just might answer your question and tell you how many genders there are. This is not a transition timeline. I took sporadic videos throughout my first year, and then just kind of stopped doing that. I did the math after I filmed and it’s been about 1 year, 7 months since I started T, and social transition is, let's be honest, eternally ongoing for nonbinary people.
0:00 - Intro/How Many Genders Are There? Are Nonbinary people trans?
3:34 - How Gendering Works
16:04 - Social Transition
18:51 - long tangent about the smoke monster from Lost

27:26 - Medical Transition
34:47 - Surgical Transition
43:48 - My chaotic transition
53:08 - conclusion/recap/final thoughts
Much of this video is tongue in cheek except the actual informational/factual parts, I hope that helps people who may be confused by my tone.
My source is all the research I did when I was looking into this and I have no idea what any of that was so here’s some information from Planned Parenthood and The Gender Dysphoria Bible:
www.plannedparenthood.org/get...
genderdysphoria.fyi/en - Розваги
Whenever someone asks me what a woman is, I answer with "a person that covers her drink when you enter the room."
Seems to satisfy them as I rarely get follow-up questions 🤷
That's a pretty good answer!
I don’t believe that’s the reaction you get
@@Tegridy555 Well what can I tell you...
hahaha leiwand
I tried T, and WOW it caused some of the worst depression of my life! (I made 2 videos about it back in 2014 and 2017 if you wanna hear about it.) For me, surgical transition was top surgery and hysterectomy. Way back in the day, people used to ask me if I'm transitioning to male, to be a man. Nope, I've transitioned to altersex, to live my best Gendervoid life. I don't tell people much about my transition irl, because I'd have to explain what "altersex" and "Gendervoid" mean, and I don't wanna give Nonbinary 101 & 102 lectures.
Yeah I really don't enjoy having those kinds of conversations
This is just a form of radical body modification.
@@saoirse2963 “just” is anything ever just one thing?
Sounds like just a bunch of atoms and forces to me. 😅
I'm so happy I found your videos. I'm ACMAB (assigned cowardly male at birth) and for over a year now I've been feeling a lot of distress at how I'm perceived as male and the expectations that that entails. I don't strongly identify with gender at all, but I feel like it's something I have to do to avoid being ridiculed or excluded by my peers at uni. I occasionally have bisexual thoughts but I'm very hesitant to call myself a bisexual in front of anybody else because it's only been a short time since I even found the confidence to approach a man and I've never even had sex with one, which kind of makes me feel like I couldn't justify that label in front of others? I really relate to that feeling of being a "fencesitter" by not sorting myself into the existing binaries and right now I'm not planning to live very long, but we'll see haha. Anyways, great video, I think you're doing amazing work 💚
The cool thing is, you can call yourself bisexual if you want, the people trying to gatekeep who "gets to be bisexual" aren't bisexuals. Same with nonbinary people. We're not generally the ones policing who calls themselves nonbinary.
Does your uni have a club for queer people or like a GSA? Or maybe the town has a pride center? There are all kinds of resources available.
If your town/uni doesn't have them, considering just surviving university then moving to one of the more leftist/liberal cities in your region. The queer community in real life isn't nearly as weird and exclusionary as the chronically online queer community is. The people you'll interact with online who police people's identities don't reflect actual real-life queer spaces, where being "I don't know, I'm just Trash" is perfectly acceptable. Most real-life queer spaces are chock full of bisexuals, since we're the largest demographic in the queer community.
@@Trash-Garbage-Trash Oh, well it's good to hear that the real-life community isn't as quick to judge as the folks online haha. Sorry if I alarmed you, it's just that I mostly found out this stuff about myself since last fall and during the last academic year I didn't really have time to explore it much or to work through my insecurities, but I'm lucky to live in a pretty liberal city and I'd like to make an effort this summer to get in touch with the local community :) I'll also look into whether my uni has dedicated spaces or events, that sounds like a great idea! I'm lucky that my close friends are mostly chill, but it would be nice to find some people to talk to IRL who feel the same haha. Anyways, thank you for responding, I really appreciate your work ^^

This is a nice bday present... I needed this... you are nailing it. Now, that said, I just realized something, something I have always held, but it has just now gelled, AND I am writing it down! Whenever I have gotten "into it"with another Human Being, I ended up walking away from the confrontation, and thought (and sometimes I even said this to the other Person) that, It's All So Fucking Complicated, And Life Is Too Short For All This BS Trying To Jam Everything Into Boxes, So Let's Just Stop It, And Have A Fucking Good Time. That Is The Important Thing Here.
Yes! Absolutely agree, we should stop being weird about stuff and just try to have a nice time and do good things while we're here
I hope you are taking steps to take care of yourself! Your work is amazing and you’ve been pumping out a lot of it in a relatively short period of time. Stay well and keep hydrated
Thank you! Yeah I might not be able to keep up this schedule for too long!

I’m still figuring out my gender identity. I’m sure I’m gay because I like guys and have regular physical relations with them, but I feel very feminine. Anyway, it’s so nice to have discussions about this 😊 Liking your videos! ❤❤
Thank you!
I can confirm clouds are peak masculine identity. Yawgmoth the Death Cloud is sigma male performance

I'm still in the first 20 minutes of this video, and can tell I'm in for a great time. You mentioned heuristics and showed Cookie Monster. I'll look for cameras in my home later.
I'm glad you're enjoying it!
I’ve been eyeballing the abdominal phalloplasty pretty hard. My main concern (aside from the price of course) is maintaining my original equipment so I don’t lose “sensation”
and
Allegedly you can’t get the surgery past 35… and I’m a little past that at this point
I've heard that but I'm not sure if it's a set in stone rule or not.
@@Trash-Garbage-Trash if it was set in stone, I'd be shit outta luck. I just turned 47!
I just had a friend in her 60s finally get her bottom surgery a couple months ago. She's still in recovery, but says it's going fine. I don't know if there's something special about abdominal phalloplasty or not, but I would bet you're fine
All surgical risk goes up as you age, but I've never heard anything about not being able to get phallo past 35. Getting older just makes your body heal worse, increasing chance for complications. Simple as.
Oh you can do no burial! And no v-nectomy. Not sure which "original equipment" you mean here but both are absolutely possible.
6:10 I thought you said "2 bosses" here (as opposed to '2 boxes') and well, it makes sense either way lol
hey i havnt seen all of ur videos yet but i've seen a couple of the first ones and i just wanted to say u've gotten SO GOOD!
Thank you! I hope they just keep getting better!
this video is a masterpiece, thank you
omg, thank you!
There's also that annoying capacity everyone has to PROJECT all kinds of their own BS onto others. All those "haters" can be shown to be doing this, most of the time. No one is safe. Be aware. Act accordingly.
Great video essay, very much enjoyed!
For me I'd answer "how many genders are there" with just 1.
I don't believe in having discrete categories in the first place, more of a multidimensional kaleidoscope (had to google how to spell that word).
Having borders between gender categories only serves to create more division between us.
Labels are great, but they should only be used as a descriptive (not prescriptive) present-tense communication tool to help articulate the subjective.
Part of gender liberation is to avoid putting people into boxes that they didn't subscribe to, e.g. man / woman.
Note, I'm saying this as a soft-launching vaguely trans-femme or bigender "coward" that's still stuck in the ejector cannon.
I kind of like that interpretation! You may win a jar of gumballs someday!
In my native language, there is no he/she, just one pronoun for everyone and when i grew up i didn't actually realise how much society was differentiating between men and women. Yeah, i wish society was actually like that. Recently i've realised that i'm non-binary according to society's gender standards, but i didn't feel a sense of disconnect in my childhood because i basically assumed everyone was non-binary. It sucks to realise how strong society's genders are and to develop gender dysphoria bc of that. It would be nice to have some non-heteronormative friends or rl environments where things could feel normal again.
@@DesimereThat's very interesting, and I wish English was like your native language.
I hardcore relate to the idea of assuming everyone is like me. Growing up, I also never got why there was any separation between boys/girls (and as an diagnosed Autistic I was an outsider to both groups).
I also felt the same way, not just with gender but with sexuality / romanticism too (I now identify as "strongly aroace spectrum").
Never really understood what crushes were. My mind just sort of assumed that crushes were just people who look pretty and I wanted to hang out with.... But I never really understood what the "big deal" was.
Didn't really understand the sexual stuff either, just chalked it up to "boys being silly".
I sort of just assumed that sex was just something people who are already in relationships did like any other hobby. But didn't really occur to me that sexual desire was a motivator for such relationships to form in the first place. Again like I was just like "what's the big deal".
@@JonathanJimbo for me, i think it was the fact that my mom relied on me for emotional support. So i became the kind of person who is very focused on the other person and their emotions. So in group settings i get exhausted really quickly and that made me an outsider at school, but not at an after-school hobby thing where the class sizes were max 5 people. That was quite manageable and i didn't stand out. I just ended up seeing all people as individuals with their individual vibes, but i never learned to catch group vibes and sentiments.
I have somehow ended up knowing a lot of autistic people, including my boyfriend, and several of them think i'm autistic too. So i do wonder sometimes, but since i'm pretty good at that "mind reading" of neurotypical people based on body language and vibes, then it's a bit sus. I've heard that it's possible for autistic people to be better at that than most neurotypicals, but then how would it even be possible to know for sure, since i already have adhd and that can cause "weirdness" too :D
I'm the dad of an genderfluid enby and I found your video interesting and entertaining.
Thank you! I love seeing supportive parents!
Feel free to steal my t shirt idea. Hello, my fellow dimorphic mammals.

Whenever someone asks me how many genders there are my answer is either: "2* (with an asterisk)" or "just over 8.1 billion"
@@roseplate279 definitely closer to 8.1 billion than 2
several things to say:
1. Who considers social transition easy??????? It's like the hardest part. Even for a binary trans woman (me), it basically amounts to having the most humiliating conversation possible over and over again. Just because people (presumably) know what a woman is, doesn't mean that they don't feel empowered to ask insane and inappropriate questions about all sort of private aspects of my life. Ugh.
2. I dress normally
3. I am leaving this comment in the hopes that the algorithm will show me MORE content like this
Yeah I agree, social is the hardest part! But some people have a perception that social transition is easier or like, the lesser version of transition. It makes no sense to me.
Thank you for commenting! I hope you get more of the kind of content you want!
Okay, I need to point out, because it's an incredibly common misconception: the bigenital/Salmacian surgery options are so, so often wrongly labeled as "non-binary phallo" and the like. It speaks to the ignorance of the largely cis medical community on trans issues generally that it's labeled as "nonbinary" no matter what.
I'm a binary trans man, and getting Salmacian phallo. Which is literally simpler than the "typical" phallo with vaginectomy, UL, etc. btw.
Oh, also you can absolutely get two penises. It's not literally adding two penises ON, but look into no burial type phallo. You'd have the phalloplasty, and the micropenis sized growth that's already there from T...not buried (don't think I can really get too graphic about it).
Yeah I know a lot of trans men get vagina-sparing phallo and metoidio, but I wasn't aware I could actually get two penises! Fascinating!
there's only one gender, and it's NERF OR NOTHING
@@SpikeyBagel 🤣
@@SpikeyBagel that's two genders actually. Nerf. And Nothing. Two of the genders!
Hey hello Im really early, but feeling weird about gender and working retail has led me to using gendered terms about only the most masculine or feminine charactes i see.
I understand it can be off to do so, but living in rural America provides certain ideas. I personally feel very off without feminine features. Ive been growing out my hair for four years and im still confused. This year was my first pride event. Do you have a discord to join? If you dont i would suggest one if you have the time.
Oh, um, I don't even know how to go about making a discord for this channel, I can look into that. There are a lot of online resources about transition and there are likely more resources and queer people in your area than you think! Or you can save up and move somewhere better. It's really hard growing up queer in rural areas but there are resources available, look into it! Planned Parenthood is a good resources, though there aren't as many of those around as there used to be.
25:34 I know exactly what you're talking about. Good ol' guess how many stuffs in the stuff container.
I'm glad someone knew what I was talking about!
asking "how many genders are there" is kinda like asking "how many colors are there"
People can only name less than like 20 colors, and can barely recognize colors within similar range (i.e. most people can't tell the difference between fuchsia and magenta). Don't expect people to recognize and remember your super-duper specific so-called gender, because they won't. By the way, colors are things we can perceived with our sight, we can't perceived "genders" with any of our senses.
Ooh very true! You might win one of the jars of stuff!
The thing about "remembering your super-duper specific so-called gender" is that people in real life aren't generally rude assholes about things that don't affect them. Then again, I live in Appalachia and maybe Appalachians are built different.
I also think people do often perceive people's genders even before they come out and transition. Trans women are often subject to violence before they come out for their perceived femininity. Trans men are often excluded from "female spaces" and treated as outsiders before they ever transition (though these get worse during transition). And nonbinary people frequently feel and are treated as gender outsiders even before coming out. People perceive differences. This is a very common experience.
I think the reply I was replying to got deleted, this was meant for someone else, not rarebeeph

@@Trash-Garbage-Trash do you have a actual arguments or you prefer to look crazy with your last comment?
Intersex people exist. They make up 1-2% of the global population. There are SO many ways someone's body can be intersex, from all the different chromosome combinations to hormones not being at the "normal" levels during puberty and adulthood or even just the genitals not being within a certain standard set by doctors, who then will perform unnecessary surgeries to "make" them fit into one box or the other.
There are not two sexes, and that's biological fact.
Baby carriers and seed producers.
i assume that according to your definition the determining characteristic between the two classifications is the number of y chromosomes, and most people can't be sure what their sex or gender is because they haven't taken a dna test? So these are Schrödinger's characteristics, existing in a non-binary superposition until tested.
