To combine the issue of "What are pointe shoes made of?", together with "They wear out so quickly!" - Can the materials from pointe shoes be recycled and put to other uses? I know unwanted books can be pulped into road surfacing materials and there's a company which repurposes old fire hoses into luggage. Who is devising a second lease of life for dead pointe shoes?
Nope. They are a mix of glue, cardboard, leather (for the shank) and satin sandwiched together. Add in the hours of that ballerinas put in (aka really sweaty feet) and the material breaks down quickly. Some ballet studios are fortunate to live near a textile recycling center where truly dead shoes can be stripped and the satin can possibly have a second life. Often, it’s too much work because, remember, that shoe is stitched and glued down. The glue is the stuff that is not fun.
Not really anything to do with them but art, but I guess if you took off the satin covering you could do fabric recycling. You can make art, which is what I do with my old tap shoes when they die, aka the it comes apart. You can make Keychains with only shoes tho
@@KateandBree Just out of curiosity how much use can you get from the satin if you know. In my experience, the satin becomes extremely worn out after just a few hours of rehearsal
I'm now 53 but did ballet from an early age. Hypermobile joints meant no pointe shoes for me. My career was over before it began so now I live vicariously through your videos. IThank you
I used to be a psychopath when I was dancing. 😂 I used toe pads and lambs wool and tape for the first year or 2 but it just became a pain in the butt and when I realized how much more I could feel the floor without, I just skipped it!
Aah a fellow psychopath. I felt exactly the same. After a few weeks with wool and padding, i throw all of it away and danced way better. I always needed the connection with the foor. My collegues didn't get it. And here you are, having experienced the exact same.
I just started pointe back in March and I only use toe pads and other girls from my studio use wool, tape, and the the toe covers. That would be my biggest flex lol 😂 🩰
When I was a kid (a long time ago) we called them toe shoes. I mean everyone did - teachers, dance shops - everyone. I don't know if it was a regional thing or what.
If pointe shoes had a walk... Capezio: 10/10 can confirm. I remember the "penguin walk" we all did when we first got our pointe shoes. Back then all we had available was Capezio. Because it was the 1980s in a small town with one shoe store. ;)
That's exactly what we had when I was dancing back in the 80's! We had Selvas and Capezios, too, but Capezios were expensive, and thought to be meant only for the more advanced dancers!!

It's a cool idea, but I don't think it's really possible. A dead shoe is put through the wringer, they get super worn out. I'm not sure any of the material is in the condition to be reused or refurbished. Trust me f it was possible to refurbish a pointe shoe, I would, they are expensive.
@@evilinc333 yes, dead pointe shoes are literally dead, like the cardboard inside is super broken, before they wear it,they break the cardboard so it would fit them and be comfortable to their feet, due to their weight, hours of dancing, etc. thr shoe would be really dead, and also the fabric gets super worn out because of friction from every day use, i think it is really impossible to refurbish dead pointe shoes

That is sort of how you feel when you have wide fluffy feet and go in to get fitted though. It's so sad, so inelegant, people are searching for the biggest shoe offered, and you pray.
Truly! I had US 9.5 feet, long toes, high arches, when I was taking lessons, and the only ones that fit me without absolutely murdering the sides of my feet ended up being Grishkos. Started on Capezio, of course, went to Freeds that looked beautiful but gave me hella blisters and rubbed my joints bloody even through tights (our teacher only let us wear lambs wool in class and watched us put our shoes on to make sure), and grishkos were the last before I stopped taking ballet. What an adventure, ha.
I love watching these videos. I always wanted to learn ballet. But, I waited to long to learn, and I grew too tall. I live vicariously through these vids.
I've often wondered why nobody has come up with a pointe shoe that lasts. Or a pointe shoe made in parts where only one needs to be replaced that often.
I know where the "concrete" answer comes from! Its the "How it's made" episode on poibte shoes. Exept it not the concrete but contact cement used for the box to glue it together. I knew that concrete mention sounded familiar.
