20m Twins - Phased Vertical Setup & Operation

  • I had a small daytime window to once again setup 20m phased 1/4 wave verticals in my garden. These are spaced 1/8th wavelength apart (2.5m)
    The phase/feed lines are 157 degrees
    The Delay line is 39 degrees
    This system is based on a design from the ON4UN Low Band DXing book. I still need to purchase this book myself.

    Perfect. Thank you for the detailed explanation of the antenna parts, then the nice shack and then a great real-world demo, then a wonderful wrap-up. All with frank discussion that didn’t just gloss over the unpredictability and need for patience. Just perfect!

      Your welcome. if your going to do this, plan for months of optimisation and on air testing. Look up KG2RG, Justin got his working a treat.

    Thanks Colin, really interesting. Looking forward to the Portable Moxon videos, I have been thinking about the same.

    Hello Colin, in my opinion the simplest way to have a phased vertical array is to use a half square antenna antenna (+3db) that if you double it you can have a Bob Tail Curtain.
    for even more gain. Feeding the half wave with a 1:49 balun on one hand you can also have multiband operation

      Agreed but you can swich it which is nice. Have the seen my later video which talks about a half square. If not check it out.

      Another good video pal,interested to know how you’ve made those boxes and clamped them to the poles?Cheers

      I will hopefully be setting these up soon again.

    No apologies needed, radio waves don't necessarily behave at the time you want them too. Multi path behaves strangely and I would think the front to back takes effect when a greater distance is involved. I'd be interested in adopting a couple of raised tuned radials as to whether they aid directivity. Well done Colin this is another masterful vid produced from the heart - 73 Mike

    When your near a CW signal Colin just hit the Auto Tune button below the LED to the left of the main dial. It will zap the VFO right to that CW signal

      I did do that off video. Need to change sidetone as I just prefer it lower in pitch.

    I've been thinking about a similar system to experiment with. This one looks really well put together. Have you considered adding to more poles for more direction?

      Thanks, it is and willl handle high power no problem. Yes I've thought about a 3 or 4 element but yet to see a design for one. Different phasing and delay lines will be required.

    Great video. Thanks for doing it. Is it possible to phase 2 dual band antennas. I would like 40 and 20.

    • @MM0OPXFieldRadio
      @MM0OPXFieldRadio  2 роки тому

      Possibly. But maybe not in the sense you think. You still need 2 complete phasing systems. You could have 2 fan verticals each with 20m and 40m elements. The 40m would be 1/8th spacing which makes the 20m 1/4 wave spacing. I think the tuning would be an absolute pig but do think it's worth trying. I may make a video talking about the possibility if this.

    Is the length of the coax from the radio to your delay critical? What length is yours and doesn't make a difference in the way this antenna operates

    • @MM0OPXFieldRadio
      @MM0OPXFieldRadio  2 роки тому

      The coax from the box to the radio is irrelevant. What's critical is the delay line and the phasing line lengths.
