Hey Cappy. I got my first sailboat like two years ago and it took two years to fix and rig her; she is just like a Sunfish: a $125, 1967 Sears Fleetwind ,12’ or so in length. Anyways, the sailing principles are there. Three failed launches/sails and then bam: totally got it. Can’t wait to get a bigger sailboat or yacht coming June 2024 or so. Your channel rocks, man: inspiring and intresting. P.S.: Sorry to hear your lady ran off: although I haven’t been married at age 34, I’ve had many ladies impatient run off and disappear. No fun.

When I bought my 1970 Alberg, I was giddy. I saw her for sale sign from the road 300 yards away and it hit me like a tone of bricks. That’s my boat. That’s my boat. Then the hull number was the same as my telephone number. Weird I thought. Now I just have to get more sailing experience. I like many of the improvements you’ve made on your boat. I am going back to the start of your journey James, and yes mate immediately I get your understanding re wanting an older boat just like enjoying old cars. Having grown up in the 60s-80s I get that. My two classic Italian cars are from ‘69. Up until some years ago all my cars were from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Re boats to me it’s no different, the boat I race on was built in ‘74 and is a classic 30ft IOR boat. While i don’t own it yet, I suspect it is inevitable I will soonish as the owner is elderly and is keen for me to do so. It has a lot of offshore and cruising history and having maintained the boat for the past couple of years I have bonded with it. I know she is strong and well equipped. Ok, now back to the current time and your adventures in the Pacific. 😁👍 Fair winds brother.

Yeah sometimes when I am filming I feel like it should be listed under "SlowTV" but I love watching that kind of stuff. I could seriously watch someone fiberglass an entire engine bay without sound for hours hahaha
Congrats! I had a very similar boat (Pearson Vanguard) that was literally a twin of the Alberg 30. I got rid of it after my kids were born due to no time to sail or work on it. But I plan to retire in a few years (still young) and want to get another classic plastic eventually.
Vanguards are so great ! I was mostly looking for a Triton when I came across this A30. Theres another beautiful boat waiting for you when you are ready !
Oh the excitement of a new boat and a classic to boot! I agree about fin keel boats, I prefer boats that will sit on their own ass even if that entails beaching legs! A relatively shallow long keel is next best to a bilger or a lifting keel! Fin keelers are simply a non starter for serious explorers as far as I am concerned! Well wear! SkipRay.
Oh the foreshadowing at 2:33 I've been watching your more recent videos and popped back to this, well ill just say that as much as I find you impressive, there is that spark in all humans, there is no need to live in a prison of the mind, and I hope to buy my first boat next month, a spirit 28, I'm just apprehensive about the 1.55m keel. Any thoughts?
Hi James, I have watched a lot of vids to do with buying fixer uppers and I think you have a very interesting project here. Speaking as someone who has been working on a very small restoration myself, I can see what lies ahead of you and feel sure you will enjoy it and end up with a very nice boat. Over here in the UK I think a bilge keel craft would be a good option, but for the oceans around the US and beyond you have made the right choice. Those fin keels and rudders just look too delicate. I look forward to following your progress. Keep on keeping on.
I dig all the double keel boats in the UK, I bet they are rather slow but handy when the tides pull way out! We have a holiday weekend coming up and I am looking forward to getting into some more projects on my A30!
Have you seen secondchancesailing channel? they have found out how useful a double keel is on a few occasions. There are a lot of drying harbours here, so very suitable. Look forward to the updates.
What a coincidence. I bought hull #517, also dark blue hull built in 1972 in May of 2017 for a similar amount. Mine has a tempermental Atomic 4 in it which I hope to replace soon. She sure is fun to sail, though. I look forward to future video's. Phil

Yeah you should switch out that A4 with a Yanmar Diesel engine. There are videos coming of me pulling my old 2gm20 and then replacing it with a 2gm20f... A dirty job but very rewarding in the end ! Curious what you think about a full keep with a swing keel built into it. Looking at a Luders 28 Offshore that has this setup Amazing videos as always !
I met a sailor in Bermuda who had just arrived from North Carolina as crew on a Tartan 34 with a bronze centerboard and he said the centerboard sounded like it was going to rip out of the boat most of the ocean passage and they boat wasn't able to sail on until after it was being repaired. I personally wouldnt want to sail a centerboard boat across oceans, unless it was from a company like KM Yachts and was a new build, but thats just me.
Sailor James, One might say a steal of a deal but it was at least & indeed, a fair deal, in that you got the basic vessel and it appeared sound. And with the work you put into her it will respond quickly. As I've noted on mine, #614 '77, there were a lot of hands in the pot for many years and quite a few previous skippers made their decisions and left their mark. I hope my efforts, like yours, will produce a more coherent flow above and below decks. The seller was quite overjoyed to be done with her and from the condition of the hull below water, did little with this classic Alberg. But each skipper has their ups and downs, and at least he was fair to you. Am following your process with interest. We can share ideas I'm sure.

There are very few modifications done to her over the years but i did pull out hundreds of feet of 1980's lamp cord which the entire vessel was wired with. Amazing. That's what I played for my cascade 29. But it was in operational condition so I lucked out there. But it has many things you didn't want. A bolt on keel and spade rudder which I knew wasn't good but for the price I couldn't refuse.
A reply to my own posting. My cascade 29 has a 4 cylinder 15 HP westerbeke diesel that runs good. However they quit making them in 1979. The boats a 74.

I started with a similar bargain boat (Najade900 1968) two years ago. A year later I sold it for a Mallard Etendard Ketch (also 1968). I'm on to my third boat, an Etap 30i from 1997, which I absolutely adore.
Great buy.. I'd rip engine out and install an outboard in a well at the stern. There's a guy who did a complete refit after travelling the world in his 30.. It's on UA-cam somewhere, I'll try find the link for you

Really excellent watching you explain things. You love sailing life -- QUESTION -- Some sailboats that I see have the rudder sort of hanging off the back of the boat. Example, this GGR race has Rustlers and Saga 36 and they have this strange looking rudder that comes all the way up the back of the boat. Your one is under water on the skeg.. What do you think of the Saga/rustler type rudders? Are they prone to damage or are they better?
In some ways transom slung rudders are good because you can have such a big rudder but you are right, they can get damaged more easily than one that is attached to the keel
@@SailorJames ..kinda thought that may be the case. The GGR, which I am soft of addicted to watching, only allows older boats under 36 and some seem to have that rudder for some reason. Weird. Would you ever consider racing around the world with your Alberg?
You can see the expression on the new owners face. One of happiness to finally own a sailboat. Just curious about buying sailboat- does it have a title and registration like a car? And the transfer of ownership is same as a car purchase? How is the process work?
James- An Alberg 30 has popped up in my neighborhood for next to nothing! I had sworn I wouldn't own a boat with an inboard( may seem crazy) atom voyages has a seg. on making an outboard in the aft lazorette. Which has me considering it!
Its my first season on my privateer 26 , had your same thought process, get ready find a giant list of to does. My only suggestion, is tackle each project one or two at a time. Right now Im stuck on a mooring can, fixing my ignition and steering cables. Best of luck! Also where you sailing out of ?

my bilge has a constant presence of nuisance water due to the inevitable prop shaft drip drip drip, but thats just part of having a boat with an inboard motor. My top three boats were Pearson Triton (27), Alberg 30, Tartan 34
I just found your channel and will start watching. I have a couple of thoughts for you. I have a Cape Dory 33, same designer. The boats are very close. You have a solid boat there. The French Canadian that designed the Cape Horn self steering wind vane sailed his Alberg around the world, twice, I think, and around the horn, not through the canal. I would recommend checking out if there is an Alberg owners association website. I will bet you can get a ton of advice and info there. If not, check out the Cape Dory owners Association website and board. I would also check out The Far Reach voyages. John Stone completely gutted a CD36, and rebuilt Far Reach over 4 years. The boat is not really a CD36 anymore, but he did a fantastic job, and I will bet there is useful information for you there. He got rid of his inboard diesel and has an outboard on his port quarter. He saved a ton of weight and gained a lot of storage and access aft. I bought my boat with a fairly recent repower, but I would consider that if I ever had a major rebuild on my yanmar.
Cape Dory's are amazing boats, I was looking seriously at and for Cape Dory 25D's for a while. Yeah Me and Yves Gelinas have corresponded several times and he sent me all the measurements to turn my rig into a double spreader. Since the first video much as been done on my boat, I have replaced the old Yanmar 2gm20 with a beautiful 2gm20f and done endless amounts of other projects. I have a big sailing trip planned for Christmas break and can't wait for several days on the water. Thanks for watching and commenting and I hope the end of this year finds you well!

i have a Alberg 30 also. bought her 3 years ago. hull number 570. i absolutely love that boat. the one problem i had was with weather helm. nearly drove me nuts. turns out the mainsail was just too old and baggy. i did not have the money at the time for a new mainsail but had a brand new sail from my former boat, a Oday 27. the luff was the same length but the foot was 3.5 feet shorter. i put in on anyway and holy fuck....no weather helm, no more early reefing, same speed in low wind condition. it was hard to understand why but i will surely not go back to that massive original sail. i live in Big Pine Key florida and we where ground zero for irma's landfall. everything around here is destroyed. i had her tied up in a narrow canal to some mangroves. the first six hours before we went into the eye the wind (gusts up to 178 mph) pushed her into the mangroves and started to roll her over he mangroves. at times the top of the mast touched the ground. after six hours the mangroves where totally crushed and gone but the lines did not fail. when it was all over on monday morning i checked out the damage: 3 bend stanchions, mahogany top rail shaved of in some spots and a few scratches in the gel coat. those Albergs can not be destroyed. I now love her even more with her scars, lol.
Whoa that is really interesting about the weather helm! I know big bottom girls can be fighters but this is a really good thing to hear from someone who has first hand experience of fighting your boat before and after. I wonder if it had anything to do with the smaller sail also creating something of a lower aspect ratio (even though it didn't go higher) or if it was like you said a result of the main being to old and stretched out. My mainsail is the original so I am sure she has a more relaxed shape than she did in 1965. Are there photos of your Alberg 30 online anywhere? I would love to see it! How terrific about Irma I am so glad to hear she weathered the storm, so many yachts didn't, seems like the mangroves acted like a large fender and have a lot more give than a dock thats for sure. Glad she didn't suffer too much damage, and our scars are declarations of capability! Fair Winds!
So far I have only had it out on a purchase shakedown sail, we (some buddies and I) are flying over next weekend for a 1 week shakedown and upgrade (radar, AIS and lifeboat etc) so we can hopefully sail it back to NZ. It is currently moored at the ex owners place in Newport Qld Australia. Cats can be crazy fast but don't point so high up wind.
It was a combination of The oil embargo in Iran and boat builders realizing fiberglass would last almost forever so they started coring boats and make the fiberglass very thin.

Congrats! I had a very similar boat (Pearson Vanguard) that was literally a twin of the Alberg 30. I got rid of it after my kids were born due to no time to sail or work on it. But I plan to retire in a few years (still young) and want to get another classic plastic eventually.
Vanguards are so great ! I was mostly looking for a Triton when I came across this A30. Theres another beautiful boat waiting for you when you are ready !

Oh the excitement of a new boat and a classic to boot! I agree about fin keel boats, I prefer boats that will sit on their own ass even if that entails beaching legs! A relatively shallow long keel is next best to a bilger or a lifting keel! Fin keelers are simply a non starter for serious explorers as far as I am concerned! Well wear! SkipRay.
Oh the foreshadowing at 2:33 I've been watching your more recent videos and popped back to this, well ill just say that as much as I find you impressive, there is that spark in all humans, there is no need to live in a prison of the mind, and I hope to buy my first boat next month, a spirit 28, I'm just apprehensive about the 1.55m keel. Any thoughts?

Hi James, I have watched a lot of vids to do with buying fixer uppers and I think you have a very interesting project here. Speaking as someone who has been working on a very small restoration myself, I can see what lies ahead of you and feel sure you will enjoy it and end up with a very nice boat. Over here in the UK I think a bilge keel craft would be a good option, but for the oceans around the US and beyond you have made the right choice. Those fin keels and rudders just look too delicate. I look forward to following your progress. Keep on keeping on.
I dig all the double keel boats in the UK, I bet they are rather slow but handy when the tides pull way out! We have a holiday weekend coming up and I am looking forward to getting into some more projects on my A30!
Have you seen secondchancesailing channel? they have found out how useful a double keel is on a few occasions. There are a lot of drying harbours here, so very suitable. Look forward to the updates.
What a coincidence. I bought hull #517, also dark blue hull built in 1972 in May of 2017 for a similar amount. Mine has a tempermental Atomic 4 in it which I hope to replace soon. She sure is fun to sail, though. I look forward to future video's. Phil

Yeah you should switch out that A4 with a Yanmar Diesel engine. There are videos coming of me pulling my old 2gm20 and then replacing it with a 2gm20f... A dirty job but very rewarding in the end ! I met a sailor in Bermuda who had just arrived from North Carolina as crew on a Tartan 34 with a bronze centerboard and he said the centerboard sounded like it was going to rip out of the boat most of the ocean passage and they boat wasn't able to sail on until after it was being repaired. I personally wouldnt want to sail a centerboard boat across oceans, unless it was from a company like KM Yachts and was a new build, but thats just me.
Sailor James, One might say a steal of a deal but it was at least & indeed, a fair deal, in that you got the basic vessel and it appeared sound. And with the work you put into her it will respond quickly. As I've noted on mine, #614 '77, there were a lot of hands in the pot for many years and quite a few previous skippers made their decisions and left their mark. I hope my efforts, like yours, will produce a more coherent flow above and below decks. The seller was quite overjoyed to be done with her and from the condition of the hull below water, did little with this classic Alberg. But each skipper has their ups and downs, and at least he was fair to you. Am following your process with interest. We can share ideas I'm sure.

There are very few modifications done to her over the years but i did pull out hundreds of feet of 1980's lamp cord which the entire vessel was wired with. Amazing. That's what I played for my cascade 29. But it was in operational condition so I lucked out there. But it has many things you didn't want. A bolt on keel and spade rudder which I knew wasn't good but for the price I couldn't refuse.
A reply to my own posting. My cascade 29 has a 4 cylinder 15 HP westerbeke diesel that runs good. However they quit making them in 1979. The boats a 74.

I started with a similar bargain boat (Najade900 1968) two years ago. A year later I sold it for a Mallard Etendard Ketch (also 1968). I'm on to my third boat, an Etap 30i from 1997, which I absolutely adore.

Great buy.. I'd rip engine out and install an outboard in a well at the stern. There's a guy who did a complete refit after travelling the world in his 30.. It's on UA-cam somewhere, I'll try find the link for you

Really excellent watching you explain things. You love sailing life -- QUESTION -- Some sailboats that I see have the rudder sort of hanging off the back of the boat. Example, this GGR race has Rustlers and Saga 36 and they have this strange looking rudder that comes all the way up the back of the boat. Your one is under water on the skeg.. What do you think of the Saga/rustler type rudders? Are they prone to damage or are they better?
In some ways transom slung rudders are good because you can have such a big rudder but you are right, they can get damaged more easily than one that is attached to the keel
@@SailorJames ..kinda thought that may be the case. The GGR, which I am soft of addicted to watching, only allows older boats under 36 and some seem to have that rudder for some reason. Weird. Would you ever consider racing around the world with your Alberg?

You can see the expression on the new owners face. One of happiness to finally own a sailboat. Just curious about buying sailboat- does it have a title and registration like a car? And the transfer of ownership is same as a car purchase? How is the process work?
James- An Alberg 30 has popped up in my neighborhood for next to nothing! I had sworn I wouldn't own a boat with an inboard( may seem crazy) atom voyages has a seg. on making an outboard in the aft lazorette. Which has me considering it!

That boat is so sweet. I'm sure you have fun cleaning her up. I noticed the bilge was completely dry. I"ve looked at many boats, many with inches of water. They always used the line that it rained last night. What were the top three boats on your list?
my bilge has a constant presence of nuisance water due to the inevitable prop shaft drip drip drip, but thats just part of having a boat with an inboard motor. My top three boats were Pearson Triton (27), Alberg 30, Tartan 34
I just found your channel and will start watching. I have a couple of thoughts for you. I have a Cape Dory 33, same designer. The boats are very close. You have a solid boat there. The French Canadian that designed the Cape Horn self steering wind vane sailed his Alberg around the world, twice, I think, and around the horn, not through the canal.
I would recommend checking out if there is an Alberg owners association website. I will bet you can get a ton of advice and info there. If not, check out the Cape Dory owners Association website and board.
I would also check out The Far Reach voyages. John Stone completely gutted a CD36, and rebuilt Far Reach over 4 years. The boat is not really a CD36 anymore, but he did a fantastic job, and I will bet there is useful information for you there. He got rid of his inboard diesel and has an outboard on his port quarter. He saved a ton of weight and gained a lot of storage and access aft. I bought my boat with a fairly recent repower, but I would consider that if I ever had a major rebuild on my yanmar.
Cape Dory's are amazing boats, I was looking seriously at and for Cape Dory 25D's for a while. Yeah Me and Yves Gelinas have corresponded several times and he sent me all the measurements to turn my rig into a double spreader. Since the first video much as been done on my boat, I have replaced the old Yanmar 2gm20 with a beautiful 2gm20f and done endless amounts of other projects. I have a big sailing trip planned for Christmas break and can't wait for several days on the water. Thanks for watching and commenting and I hope the end of this year finds you well!

i have a Alberg 30 also. bought her 3 years ago. hull number 570. i absolutely love that boat. the one problem i had was with weather helm. nearly drove me nuts. turns out the mainsail was just too old and baggy. i did not have the money at the time for a new mainsail but had a brand new sail from my former boat, a Oday 27. the luff was the same length but the foot was 3.5 feet shorter. i put in on anyway and holy fuck....no weather helm, no more early reefing, same speed in low wind condition. it was hard to understand why but i will surely not go back to that massive original sail. i live in Big Pine Key florida and we where ground zero for irma's landfall. everything around here is destroyed. i had her tied up in a narrow canal to some mangroves. the first six hours before we went into the eye the wind (gusts up to 178 mph) pushed her into the mangroves and started to roll her over he mangroves. at times the top of the mast touched the ground. after six hours the mangroves where totally crushed and gone but the lines did not fail. when it was all over on monday morning i checked out the damage: 3 bend stanchions, mahogany top rail shaved of in some spots and a few scratches in the gel coat. those Albergs can not be destroyed. I now love her even more with her scars, lol.
Whoa that is really interesting about the weather helm! I know big bottom girls can be fighters but this is a really good thing to hear from someone who has first hand experience of fighting your boat before and after. I wonder if it had anything to do with the smaller sail also creating something of a lower aspect ratio (even though it didn't go higher) or if it was like you said a result of the main being to old and stretched out. My mainsail is the original so I am sure she has a more relaxed shape than she did in 1965. Are there photos of your Alberg 30 online anywhere? I would love to see it! How terrific about Irma I am so glad to hear she weathered the storm, so many yachts didn't, seems like the mangroves acted like a large fender and have a lot more give than a dock thats for sure. Glad she didn't suffer too much damage, and our scars are declarations of capability! Fair Winds!

Its in Oz at the mo but hope to sail to NZ in November
So far I have only had it out on a purchase shakedown sail, we (some buddies and I) are flying over next weekend for a 1 week shakedown and upgrade (radar, AIS and lifeboat etc) so we can hopefully sail it back to NZ. It is currently moored at the ex owners place in Newport Qld Australia.
Cats can be crazy fast but don't point so high up wind.
Excellent sailboat -- QUESTION -- What happened to boat building after 1972 that turned you off so much?
It was a combination of The oil embargo in Iran and boat builders realizing fiberglass would last almost forever so they started coring boats and make the fiberglass very thin.
