Annie was called "Mint" because of her love of peppermint and I think she was 13. Lancer became Yellow Dancer to hide from the Invid while helping to build morale among the villages through "her" singing. The Invid show up because their Flower of Life was stolen from them by the Robotech Masters and Zor. The Invid were the victims according to the 1986 graphic novel. This entire intergalactic battle that we call Robotech, is the result of the Robotech Masters stealing a powerful flower from the Invid, converting it into a powerful fuel-source and having Zor store it inside a ship (SDF-1) and sending it to a place he'd hope the Masters nor the Invid would ever find again... Earth. Ideally, the Invid should be home on planet Optera enjoying their Flower of Life in peace. I'll admit, I never read the Jack Mckenny novels - only the graphic novel - so I might have missed some things in my comment. But I still love this chapter of Robotech.

If you haven't already, I strongly recommend tracking down some used copies of the novels on amazon or elsewhere.. They were well written, I think, especially Macross. Lots of plot holes and questions are filled in nicely, from engineering feats to the soap opera of various characters. There is an extra level of drama to everything. Nothing is glossed over. Example: in Force of Arms, the writer describes Exedore's utter shame and sorrow as he stands with Gloval, watching the Earth being annhilated. As a young teen back then, it wrecked me as I read it, despite having already watched the show and knowing the full story.

Saw the show at 10yrs old. Read the novels at 13. As you said.
After 12 books covering there 3 anime series, the next 5 novels (The Sentinels) covers human and Zentradi heros headed to Masters-Invid corner of the universe to try and fight the Invid on their turf. Warp engine time disturbance has them missing the Invid Regis headed in the other direction. An Invid Regent rules and they've subjugated many local systems. Human & Zentradi faction hook up with various alien species to help liberate their home worlds eventually defeating the Regent. Humans then send forces back to Sol system to liberate Earth. End of New Gen has the original heros from Macross coming in as the Invid Regis leaves Earth taking them into some other realm/plane of existence/dimension/section of the universe. Book 18 continues from here with characters from all series in a rather bizarre direction. I forget how it went, but the very end was like, huh? But it was fun when I was 13-14.
3 more novels were made to milk things/fill in some other time periods in the overall storyline.
Books 19, 20, & 21 I remember the least. One story was an adaptation of a comic story of rebelling mirconized Zentradi who lived in South America that found it too difficult to adapt to peace time living. Remember, Zentradi were genetically created in a lab to know only war. (As a metaphor it might be, were raised to know only war). Or, maybe the comic was an adaptation of that book. I forget.
      I loved the New Gen.
I like the original anime stories by themselves, as well. Especially Mospeada.

Something worth noting there is an actual connection between Genesis Climber Mospeada and Super Dimension Fortress Macross. And Michael picks up on it without realizing it. It's the bloody Alpha and Beta Fighters. (the Legioss and the Tread in the original). See just as Genesis Climber Mospeada was starting to air, the Macross Merchandising Juggernaut suddenly lit off (after the show had already been cancelled). Everybody wanted the Valkyrie toys and model kits. Mospeada's showrunners had only planned to use the fighters in the first episode. It was supposed to be entirely a motorcycle based show. But suddenly the Marketing department demanded that they have to bring back the fighters. Then add more in different colors etc. They wanted a toyline. This drove the guys making the show nuts. Because having the cast drag spacefighters all across the landscape was an absurd pain in the ass. The guys making the show knew having Rook and Rand just jump in space fighters was idiotic. They didn't have a choice. It wasn't their idea.

As much as I love Robotech, this has been one of the funniest retrospectives on the show I have seen. Kudos to RetroBlasting for continuing despite some rather vocal resistance by other fans of the show. I will keep on loving the show, but revisiting it will now provide me a laugh or two whenever I come across a point RetroBlasting brought up during the reviews.

Episode #8, Johnathan's Elegy, (Robotech ep Eulogy) is one of my favorites. It's so dark, the false war hero, selling out his fellow soldiers for a devil's deal, the Invid won't attack the city and allow the people limited fuel, as long as the stream of sacrificial soldiers keeps coming. But that ending..., where our heroes seem to win the day and go off to the next advenutre, only to see the Invid surround the city and obliterate it in retaliation of Johnathan/Wolf's double cross. Man that's a dark ending.

The 3rd series has many more human emotion moments. The episode with the old soldiers or Commander Wolf were very adult for kids watching when compared to GI Joe or Transformers. The Annies birthday part was also very sad. When they took time to explore the world like the episode in Denver was also very fun to see them explore a frozen city in time.

Thank you for watching this so I don't have to. I'm far more of a Macross fan than I am of Robotech, but if it wasn't for the original series I likely wouldn't have discovered it. Even the continued Macross Saga in Japan has faltered in its most recent efforts (Macross Delta) with the last good series (and perhaps the best series) being Macross Frontier. Well worth watching.
I'm so looking forward to seeing you tackle the murky waters of Robotech/Macross licencing with Harmony Gold, Big West and all the other players. It's been a mess for decades and there's no end in site.
Also, thanks for the vocabulary word. lilliputian.

I love Robotech but absolutely hate Harmony Gold. They are like an advertising agency that thinks they get a cut of anything made after just because they helped make a thing somewhat popular in a region. And note I said somewhat. Compared to Transformers or He Man or Gi Joe Robotech was barely a blip on the radar of most of us 80s kids. It was just a few die hards like me who loved it.

When I was a child and really into Robotech, it was cancelled in my market after the Masters chapter. I never got to see the New Generation installment in my youth. I would see the New Generation toys in stores and my only glimpse were the scenes in the opening. I always wondered and wanted to know what happened in the final chapter of Robotech? I even thought it never even existed, sorta like the Voltron II//Albegas series to go with the toy. In my late teens, Toonami ran Robotech and I thought I was finally going to get to see the New Generation series. When Masters ended, they re-ran Macross and ditched showing NG! WTF!? Finally, in the early 00's, ADV began releasing the DVD boxed sets which I was pre-ordering and picking up from Suncoast video. I couldn't wait but I wasn't going to get my hands on it until the 6th set was released. When the first volume of NG finally arrived, I waited to watch it until the final set was released. Upon first viewing, I binge-watched and I wasn't disappointed as I really enjoyed it. I was just so excited that after 20+ years I finally got to feast my eyes on what I felt was forbidden to me. I totally agree with your review and I also feel that it slogs somewhere in the middle, but the bad stuff gets balanced with the good (also loved the random Miami Connection bad ADR comparison). Now, I am really excited to see your review on the action figures. Last year, I finally completed the entire figure line (including a sealed Lunk figure), so it will be interesting to see what your opinion will be. They aren't the best figures ever produced and I know you're not going to hold back, but they hold a special place in my heart. Plus, it's been a while that you've done a figure line review (which I have been missing). Don't get me wrong, I love the channel but lately its been full of podcasts, unboxings, restorations, Star Wars rants (yeah, I can see the new trilogy blows), etc. I enjoy all of that stuff but the toy line reviews dominate. I can't wait and keep up the great work!

  • @RogueTwo
    @RogueTwo 4 роки тому +34

Well reviewed. I personally cut Scott a lot of slack because of how utterly, and perhaps unsalvageablly damaged he is. Scott has seen not just his finance, but everyone that he knew and loved horribly killed within minutes of arriving at Earth. He is completely broken by it, and the only thing that keeps him going is hyper-focusing on his mission and a desire for vengeance on the Invid. So he buries his emotions and comes off as stiff and repressed. But he's too much of a mess to maintain it and lashes out like an angry unlikable jerk whenever things don't work out right. It's sad really. At the end of the series, he heads back out into space alone because he's afraid of letting himself get too close to his new friends. He's running away and calling it a new mission.
All of the New Generations characters are pretty damaged, really. Rook and Lunk in particular. But living and surviving in a world like this, I suppose how could you not be? And that at least, how flawed all of these characters are, does help set it apart a bit. As for the Invid, to be honest, initially, I loved them. After Macross and Southern Cross gave us inexplicably human aliens without satisfactorily (IMHO) explaining how and why that is, it was nice to get truly alien aliens... At least until they of course chose to make themselves human, and of course were then seduced by "suddenly experiencing human feeling and emotions." After that the Invid stop being unique and become as clinched as the Masters and just as boring.

I don't know, honestly I like the idea of the Invid being a 3rd nation state drawn in by the Masters and the Humans over Protoculture and the flower of life.
It shows that there are massive solar-political dealings across the cosmos and wars in distant star systems over resources.
The idea of have the Invid be the 3rd attempt by the Masters in a "We'll release our most powerful soldiers yet!" would make Robotech feel less like Star Wars crossed with Star Trek and more like Thundercat's or "You'll pay for this Captain Planet" Saturday morning stock villains.

Some crazy stuff you didn't address: Scott punching an old man in the face, Rand peeping on naked Marlene, Rook, and underage Annie, Lunk blithely blowing up perfectly preserved Denver just to wipe out a couple Invid who would have left anyway, and Annie abandoning her marriage to Magruder. I liked your review a lot and actually agree with you on most issues. But Scott was and still is my hero. This whole series remains my favorite during the 80’s racing home to catch the episodes until we finally bought a vcr.
I have the whole series now and I am watching it with my son.

Excellent review of this saga filled with a complex storyline and dynamic characters. I have been a huge fan of Robotech and enjoy both the Japanese and US versions equally. I can only imagine a review covering the toyline would be like coming up next. I dig the new intro as well.

The third saga is my favorite among the three. I think it’ll make a good Hollywood-type, 2-hour movie. They should hire Keane to play songs that Yellow Dancer sings.

I dislike anime in general. That being said the few I saw as a kid: Star Blazers, Robotech and Battle of the Planets (and recently watched Dougram) are the only ones I like. Tried 4 or 5 others serries and I can't do it....

Well, there is more than a reason because nobody in Japan remembers Southern Cross and Mospeada while Macross is still a celebrated franchise.

    • @RichFreeman

Yeah, as I understand it the only reason they had the other two shows in there was the requirements of TV syndication at the time. A show with so few episodes wouldn't have been accepted. Of course most shows of the era didn't tell a continuous story so that was easier to do for other shows.

    • @Gridseeker
      @Gridseeker 4 роки тому

Indeed. At least Mospeada has some DVD and Blu ray releases along with other merchandise as transformable figures of both airplanes and motorbikes, but Southern Cross is the anime that practically nobody saw in Japan. Only some laserdiscs and a DVD release which are OOP since a long time ago and a few model kits by Arii and that´s all.

Episode 21, Dusty Aires, they make you sympathize with him, Rook falls in love with him, and he gets vaporized saving her. You just didn't get episodes like those in anything else in 80's cartoons in the U.S.

Great review of one of my favorite stories of my youth. Unfortunately I remember a lot of this played out of order when I was a kid. It was just a cartoon. Then I discovered the books. I read the snot out of them. Then I finally got a chance to watch it all in order. Macross will always be the best but I really enjoyed this series. It's where I gained my love for motorcycles.

I agree with you in most of your opinions and appreciate your breakdown. Macross is the gem and the rest were necessary diversions. Carl Macek did a good job under adversity, and the writers did the best they could too. I still love the whole saga, warts and all!

Coming fro Germany we had nothing of this back then ... but, I remember a Toy Katalog which had his Blue Jet Mech in there! I looked cool but had just the note, Transforming Robot. Just putting something in there during the Transformers hype. But I only ever saw this image and no where else in a store. ... also, My family was often in France for the Sommer and I remember that there was this bike toy and yes it was also from this series! It was in french and didn't know what it was about? In general France, Italy, Spain also had tons of Animes airing back then and the toys going along. Germany was more a backwater town when it came to TV shows. ... Years later now seeing this I am in awe at last knowing what I saw back then which was so random to me as a kid. Thank you / Vielen Dank!

This was enjoyable to see and hear. It's one of those deals where I'm glad you watched it so I didn't have to. I think it was back in 2016 when I tried watching the original Mospeada. I don't remember exactly how far I got, definitely past the part where they introduced the green-haired girl. I had a similar reaction. I lost interest somewhere in the middle. I have no issue with problem-of-the-week shows -- many great American TV shows are that format -- but something about the episode structure of Mospeada seemed so haphazard. Some of the episodes were quite good and interesting, but the story progression seemed so random at times. The gender-bending character wasn't as interesting to me in practice as the idea may have seemed when they came up with it. The whole concept seemed like a way to kill time and get some pop music into the show to perhaps adhere to a certain formula. While I enjoyed a number of the episodes and some of the characters, the show was also frustrating, so I gave up on it in the middle. Luckily for me, I switched my attention to Dairugger, which I thought was tremendous and restored some faith in old anime of the time.
I can imagine how much went into this project, with each show having two versions to go over, along with taking notes and noticing details, along with all the technical work. You definitely noticed a lot of things I would not have caught. It was good to hear the critiques of all three parts. I never saw any of Robotech for some reason until Cartoon Network started showing it in the late 1990s. I had already heard that it was very good, so I was excited for it. And I loved the Macross portion of it, but fell off during the second part. This was good for me to find out how they handled adapting Southern Cross and Mospeada. Unfortunately, it seems like both of those were seriously flawed even in their original Japanese forms. Anyway, the Robotech retrospective and critique was very enjoyable(I loved the "why is she still in the military?" from part two), and thank you for the hard work.

I felt the same way back in the day when I watched this in the initial run that this show was not as good as Macross but it was a massive breath of fresh air after sitting through the underwhelming slog of Southern Cross. I definitely remember the start of the series where Scott comes to earth, the team comes together, and the first few adventures before losing some interest as it was getting repetitive. I came back roughly before Marlene was introduced and finished the series. I did find the ending of this series to be very satisfying compared to the previous two. Macross wasn't a bad ending, more of a bittersweet finale while Southern Cross was downright an apocalyptic downer.
I really would like to watch the original Genesis Climber Mospeada as I honestly don't think I can sit through Robotech again. That's not a knock on Robotech, it's more to do with my sensibilities with voice acting that have changed.
If you revisit this world again I personally recommend Macross: Do You Remember Love.

Oh wow! I really had forgotten a lot of the details in this last portion the trilogy. Although, this portion of the Robotech series, was always depressing. The earth being in shambles and all the other oddities. Lancer Dancer was pretty weird to ten year old me, and I definitely missed that Rook was had by that biker gang. I always liked Scott though, reminded me of Cyclops character from the X men. The Cyclones are an awesome component. Also this was much better than the Masters portion of the series. I would watch them all in order, every time they aired, and then re aired the series. I think they ran the gamut of all thre portions at least two or three years in a row in the after school time slot in my area (upstate NY). Of present times weren’t so depressing I think this would spur me to watch the run all the way through once more. Hell, we had a kid that brought the Macross saga DVD collection with him to Iraq and we watched it between patrols in the fall of our deployment (I was there in OIF 1, so things began to settle down after initial invasion, and we stayed in one spot for a few months and actually had electricity for 8 to 10 hours a day if we had gotten fuel for our generators).

Wow when I watched robotech as a kid I never realized the biker gang that cornered Rook in that flashback might have had their way with her. For some reason I just never stopped to think about what was implied. I might look for unofficial supporting media to explore that further to better understand the character and her past.

I was in like 4th or 5th grade when this part of the series was on and when the Sera stuff happened, they used the song "Sara" by Starship in the show. lol I fell in love with that song because as a 10 yr old or whatever, that was some deep heavy heartbreak Lancer was experiencing! Of course, when you watch it now, the song is replaced by something else because the license ran out long ago.

    • @ryangunwitch-black

Of course, the internet makes me feel insane because there is no mention of the song in conjunction with the show but I know it happened. It was the outro for the episode when she dips out on Lancer. Then I heard it on the radio like the next week.
