- The Australian Army’s new Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle (CRV) was put to the test during the Amphibious Task Group’s Exercise Sea Wader 2020. The vehicle completed a series of beach training scenarios, including driving over sand, vehicle recoveries, embarking and disembarking from LCM8s and Navy Light Landing Craft, and transiting to and from Royal Australian Navy ship HMAS Adelaide. Exercise Sea Wader 2020 enabled newly qualified Boxer CRV crews from the 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment to practice operating in a coastal setting and increase their amphibious capability.

@@dukedashwolfgg2283 that’s part of my concern with this platform as well as the purchase of the 400 KF-41 or AS-21. They’re basically the same vehicle except 1 is tracked. We should have got an Amphibious Assault Vehicle instead of these because at this point the Canberra’s are basically just stupidly expensive transports In their current role.
Army is currently going to raise another amphibious assault regiment so why would we not instead raise a small marine corps with 2 infrantry regiments with an armoured amphibious capability which would much better suit operations in our local area of influence.
That'd do down at preston beach. Just needs some rod holders and an awning and it'd be perfect.

I remember arcing up with the 25 on the ASLAVs and was very underwhelmed. I can’t imagine the 30 being a much better option. Perhaps a 40 or 57 woulda been better as there is a wider range of projectiles.
@@komradearti9935 Agreed, but I haven’t seen anything in the Defence white papers outlining the acquisition of AHEAD. I can only find reference to HE and HEI. Can you link a source as I’m genuinely curious if that’s what defence is planning.
I know they went 30mm mainly due to sharing munitions with naval 30mm currently in service.
@@komradearti9935 AA is a massive weakness within the ADF, I understand 40 years ago it not being a huge issue due to our geopolitical environment but with rapid advancement in drone technology AA needs to put up higher on the priority list.
Looking into the mk30-2 ABM cannon I think you may be correct in assuming the ADF will be utilising AHEAD with the boxers, I just can’t find a “confirmed” source.
Have you seen the hawkei project ? The Wishlist for that vehicle is absurd, gonna be like a yank Humvee (rolling coffin). Let’s hope it’s deployed in the role it’s meant for. Light Armoured Utility.

Guess the ASLAV's will be on the auction block as soon as the Boxer gets commissioned, that will have to do for now.
Highly unlikely that an ASLAV will be sold to public, I imagine a G2G to a less then peer neighbor... or the scrap heap if not retrievable

Can you? what is your solution? It is very easy to criticize? “One Spartan one riot” as the old saying goes... the demonstration was in regards to humanitarian missions to support the other capabilities shown last year, once the CRV vehicle comes online I am sure they will test in simulated combat landings... a 30mm stabilized platform with ABM can certainly clear the beach
I was thinking that too. landing 1 boxer at a time seems pretty useless. Thats the problem with ''off the shelf'' solutions like the attainment of Juan Carlos amphibious vessels and Boxer AFV's ...sometimes stuff just doesn't work well together.
They should probably ferry over a Thales hawkei with the boxer I guess and restructure their mechanized composition for beach landings.

That's a very difficult beach to drive on. Extreme environment.
It's not meant to be a extreme environment it is testing it's amphibious capabilities

I think it's awesome the things we can achieve today when we couldn't do that in WW2 .. at least we can deploy a full package at full strength !!
Imagine if we had this capability in WW2 , the Aussie did everyone proud , But if we supplied them with this kinda kit they would of smashed everyone ..

the thing is monstrous, double the size of any main battle tank, thing will just attract fire and so big, it will be hard to miss.
@John H lol yes buts its an armored car twice the height and width of an Abrams tank and until recently experts been saying that tank was too big for the battlefield. An armored car sacrifices armor for mobility and weight.... so do you want to be in the biggest thing on the battlefield that cant hide or be sneaky and screams shoot me im full of soldiers, knowing you cant take a hit like a a tank

Given that the CRV isnt meant to slug it out with enemy mechanised forces (that's what the Lynx is for), that's a very good trade off. Esp since you can see further from higher up ...

@@positroll7870 i cant seem to reply with a pic, but this web site ( www.contactairlandandsea.com/2017/06/21/land-400-scale-things-come/ ) has the comparison look how the last vehicle on the left towers above the only tank in the photo. That tank used to be the biggest thing on the field and then this vehicle came out. Recon are supposed to be light and fast and trade protection for ability to scoot. That boxer though is so big you can blind fire at it and hit it. In Iraq a abrams tank was hit with 37 rpg's can you imagine that boxer being even able to take 1 hit. Most battlefields these days are urban based. you dont want a vehicle full of troops being nailed in combat, bigger is not better

For such a big vehicle what is the advantage of 8 wheels over tracks? The latter will give far better mobility and what about changing one of those huge wheels? Who or what does that?
Better strategic mobility:
Self deployment without trains or huge trucks. Needs less fuel and goes much faster and further.
If a missile or mine blows off a wheel or two it can keep driving for miles. A damaged track needs to be replaced at once.
Better logistics
re fuel and spare parts.
Needs much less man hours from mechanics to keep driving.
Downside is less tactical mobility re trenches, swamps and hills.
@@positroll7870 Yes, the mine point is a good one, lose a wheel or two and keep going. But tracks can't be beat for getting a AFV where it's needed and that surely should be a crucial consideration, all a AFV's qualities are pointless if it can't do that. It's vital that infantry can get direct support when needed, vital..
@@FairladyS130 that's why most* armies ALSO get a tracked ifv. In the case of Australia that will be lynx or redback, while the Boxer serves as apc and crv.
*France prefers to go only with wheeled apcs and ifvs. See the VBCI and jaguar. Fine for fighting the local rebels in Africa.
Meanwhile the UK doesn't quite seem to know what it is doing...
@@FairladyS130 also, strategic mobility is a key factor. The best tank doesn't help you if you can't get it to the fight in time or if it gets blown up by enemy aircraft while still loaded on railcars or trailers.
Remember the saying: Amateurs study tactics. Professionals study logistics...

It doesn`t look like it handles the sand well at all. In the fresh sand it is hardly turning at all. And then they just show it following previously made tracks, probably made by the old "duck" in the background.
Probably tracks made by the Boxers that drove off prior. It's a ship to shore exercise, that would have been done repeatedly.
It maybe fine rolling onto a beach unopposed but how will fair under ATGM and drone attacks?
Look up it's protection ratings and you will be able to answer your own question. STANAG 6.
Any amphibious landing where the enemy knows you are coming is suicidal. Even the USMC is just going away from directly assaulting a beach and going for air mobility keeping as far away from shore as possible.
V22 Osprey tiltrotors and M777 artillery pieces, HIMARS mlrs, M-ATV They can drop those off from miles away. Beastly CH-53K helicopters.
Just hope our new assets aren’t too expensive 2 deploy (@ will) in actual combat ... how willing r our armed forces 2 sustain loss & replacement in reality … how will overwhelming enemy numbers “b dealt with?”
That vehicle needs some real stopping power put on the roof. Having a 12.7mm on the roof is like like having a Steyr when you really need an SLR.....
They can exchange the 'mission module' and put pretty much anything there. Boxers are used in many different roles the 12.7mm is used on the troop carriers. A infantry squad comes out and they can carry mortars, anti-tank missiles whatever infantry uses. There is even a 155mm artillery gun module version those can fire on enemy tanks straight on in an emergency. Is that enough firepower for you ?
By the way infantry love the boxer as it has lots of room and comfort. Some come equipped with toilets so you don't have to go out in partisan/taliban country to take a sh*t. Many German soldiers in WW2 never came home just from going out to take a sh*t they got lost in the snow or desert or they did not check their surroundings because they needed to go very badly and got ambushed.

They took Boxers up north into the snow and it got stuck and had to be pulled out by a tracked vehicle.
I think it was during that really big NATO exercise to intimidate Russia.
It was driven into a ditch. I dont know any vehicle that cant get stuck that way, if the driver is dumb enough (or if the ditch is covered by heavy snow).
Even a Abrams or Leo can end up needing rescue ...
It's perfect for Australian conditions. We don't really have snow. It can drive 1000km at 100kmh on a single tank of fuel !

@@positroll7870 my point is that it is as heavy as a tank but has 8 wheels, therefore much higher ground pressure. Frankly I’m surprised it made it up the beach. Also as are on vehicle it is REALLY big .
@@anthony9thompson Boxer has passed lots of mobility trials with flying colors. The idea it would get stuck in a bit of beach is actually pretty ridiculous.
Yeah, its tall. Like its competitors. Makes it better survive ieds and drive away, as shown during the Aussie trials of it. This also allows the troops to carry everything needed for prolongued ops inside the vehicles. No rucksacks dangling everywhere. Which is a requirement if you want to integrate a good APS like

Armor design is always a trade off.
@@positroll7870 yes absolutely amour design is always a trade off. The boxer has good firepower and armour. It has traded those features for reduced tactical mobility. That is it’s trade off. The Auslav which the boxer replaced weighed around 13 tons , it also had 8 wheels . The Boxer weighs around 40;tons with the same amount of wheels . Lavs get bogged in mud and beach sand ALL the time . The Boxer will be the same.
no point doing beach landings when China already has full, private and open access to multiple airports and seaports in Australia.
Most landings are for relief efforts like the latest tsunamis

Those ASLAVs used to get bogged every 30mins too, if these things are heavier my sympathies go out to the bush-chooks digging them out frequently.

How are these things going to get around anywhere in the SW Pacific? They're ideal for Nth European plain (ie Germany) or flat deserts of Mid East.
