I'm being honest. I'm really tired of gear (channels). In my opinion, it's not about having all that special gear, but about having a great sound with what you have. I love your channel anyway, so don't worry! ;) What I wanted to tell you in the first place, is, that you really found your own sound. Not talking about gear, but your phrasing and note choices. You often do something, that many try to "avoid" for some reason. Myself included. But that's nonsense! And that is playing notes more than once in a row. Melodies can benefit from playing the same note again! And that's what you do very well! I like your playing! It's really getting better and better over the years (yes, I've been subscribed to you for years! ;)). Viele Grüße aus Aachen! Markus
That was a great demo, thanks! I'm using the IR-X as my two-channel amp and cab sim in the FX loop of my HX Stomp board. The gain versatility of the IR-X is so great that I sold the majority of my overdrives and am relying mostly on IR-X or the on-board ODs of the HX Stomp.
The ir-x works great into the front of the jcm800 clone, normal channel, low gain. Stacking preamps always did wonders on my side. Sounds very natural.
I think it’s a great product. I have a tube amp but live in a studio apartment, so I usually practiced through a Roland JC-22 with headphones, so a product like this would be ideal since it’s a preamp that I can use into the effects loop. Thanks for the demo Kris, you’re an amazing musician and really know how to show us the best of a product.
Thanks a lot man! I really like this one because it feels like using a traditional amp. In your situation I‘d just put modulation and time based pedals in the IR-X‘s loop and use the headphones out. No need for anything else, you get the IR cab simulation through that output too. Super simple and boy it sounds great.
First run through with the IRX and I put an SD1 in front of it into the return of my 5150…I was pretty blown away. I know running the send is supposed to kill the IR but it does still seem to change voicing when you click through the 3 IRs? Looking forward to adding some modulation to see where that takes it. I’ve used the TONEX pedal to get some Friedman captures and while nice…they do not stack up to this unit upon first impressions.
Yes, totally. You can also disable the IRs on the unit itself. Long press the left footswitch. 👍 It’s still recommended to use the FX send for amps though, since the output is a TRS jack (balanced plug).
Nope, these are traditional single coils, no noise gate, nothing. I never have more noise, no matter where I am and what kind of rig I’m playing. That’s why I don’t understand why some are so worried about it. If you’re not super close to your amp (or a computer monitor) you should be fine. I mean electrical installation plays a role too, but I never had issues with that here in Europe.
Good review Kris. I have a Two Notes Revolt guitar preamp. This Friedman IR-X looks very similar. I use the Revolt after an analog pedal board >>> Fryette Power Station >>> real cabs I own. I'd use this Friedman IR-X the same way and probly never use its IRs. On the Revolt you can footswitch thru 3 channels going from Fenderish clean to Marshall OD to High Gain lead voices. Looks like you can only switch 2 channels on this IR-X yes?? Also ask the Q does IR-X sound significantly better on its base channels than Revolt. Forgetting about IRs that I'd never use - thx :)
I'd really like to know if this can be played through an FRFR speaker cab. I've watched a few reviews on it, but no one touches on that option. Can anyone confirm that for me please ?
@@vkgraphics yes of course, it’s made for that. I’m using my studio monitors here and FRFR cabs are basicaly the same thing, only specifically made for guitar amp modelers. So yeah, no problemo. 👍
@@KrisBarocsi Hi Kris. Thank you for your reply. I have watched a good few videos on the IR-X, but no one seems to make it clear, or even mention the use of an FRFR cabinet. Not sure why, given so many people now use one.
Geräuschpegel bei high gain ist so wie bei den großen Friedman Amps: schon was da, aber nicht so schlimm, wie z.B. beim Peavey 6505 und Co. Ich hab kein gate benutzt. Ciao!
Can you tell me how this compares to the Fender Tone Master Pro? Does this sound and feel more like a real tube amp? Is the difference between the two significant?
Can hear some harsh clipping in the background of the unit when there is aggressive picking. Seems to be the issue with all these preamp pedals and gets really annoying personally. The same happens with the UA Dream '65 and just about every other preamp I've tried. I think this demo has sold me on sticking to tube amplifiers or amp modellers for good. Great video though!
I would use this with my Seymour Duncan Powerstage, in a Marshal 4x12, line out to FOH where available. A couple of pedals for effects and good to go. The drive with the P90’s is beautiful. I would never need a separate drive pedal. Great review. Anyone looking for a kidney, I’m selling 😉
Yeah man, you can tell he made so many rigs for so many pros... He has the ears to tune in killer sounding amps and he knows what players want. Pretty badass. 😆 Cheers bro!
Kris, one question, can the Friedman IR X be completely bypassed? So, that I can use different Pre-Amp Pedals or for example with a clean pedalplatform amp and still have my Amp clean tone? If yes, how? Thank you very much 🙂
Hey, you can't bypass the IR-X on the pedal itself (you can bypass the fx loop or the IRs btu not the whole pedal). It's not really made for that. It should be last in row, you use it instead of using an amp.
Aww man, thank you! Yeah I obviously didn't want to do the same thing, that'd be boring for you and for me too. 😅 I felt like we didn't show these things (strat, P90, etc) and I get it, many players prefer these guitars, or pedals and want to know how the IR-X delivers as a pedal platform. Thanks for watching, you're the man!!
