So many people always comment in other videos about crews standing around... nothing better to know there is a rescue team ready to go in and save a life. Massive Event... no cake walk... fire fighters are a special breed. Thank you for doing what you do.

Probably a propane tank under molten titanium. I am not sure. One thing I know for sure, after the initial explosion I ran for my life. In 15 years of covering various blazes this explosion was a shocker. Even as far as across the Boulevard, thousands molten flaming metal bits flying and bouncing on the pavement in all directions. It was literally "raining fire." Like a hailstorm in hell! Miraculously no-one was killed.

NEVER EVER and in case you didn't see the first word NEVER put water on a Titanium fire. The end result is what you see.

Class D fires involve combustible metals, such as magnesium, titanium, and sodium. ... The most common method for extinguishing a combustible metal fire is to cover the burning material with a dry powder, such as sand, which will not react with the material.

If the guys on the towers had to change their pants when they got back to the barn, I wouldn't blame them one bit.

@firelensman "As a powder or in the form of metal shavings, titanium metal poses a significant fire hazard and, when heated in air, an explosion hazard.[77] Water and carbon dioxide-based methods to extinguish fires are ineffective on burning titanium; Class D dry powder fire fighting agents must be used instead."-wikipedia
    it was titanium

Air tanker with purple k or dry chem would have helped maybe.

might as well have been spraying jet fuel on that fire... Either poorly informed firefighters or poorly trained. The only thing you can do with an exotic metals fire zirconium, titanium, magnesium, etc etc is contain and let it burn itself out. Temperatures that high split the water into oxygen and hydrogen.. the oxygen feeds the fire, and the hydrogen builds until it is dense enough to ignite and BOOM...

We used either purple K or talcum, in the field we used AFFF light water.

I have made a fire fighter doc. about what it takes to be a fire fighter because I want all the young men and women looking into the fire service to know what it takes to be in the fire service, career and volunteer.

Pouring water on a titanium fire would be like trying to extinguish a massive forrest fire by pissing on it. Has zero effect, and in this case actually caused a massive explosion. Dry chemical is the only thing that can snuff out a blaze like this, anything else is vaporized before even getting close to the center point. Feel bad for LAFD, they were doing their best to bring the blaze under control but to no avail unfortunately. Thankfully no one was injured, but I'm sure several people needed clothing changed afterwards!! Very scary situation
