One of the most underrated movies of the 1990's. Obsession, desire, betrayal, corruption, racism, depravity, voyeurism, addiction, technology, revolution, this movie did it all. It's a sci-fi masterpiece with an intricate plot and vivid characters. Kathryn Bigelow's greatest work.
I've seen this film back then vhs tape--rented it. I liked it a lot! Got my surprised that it was directed by an unknown female director named kathryn bigelow. And I said I wanna watch more of her films!! And have to wait for long years before she was able to make another.
Wow dude. As a movie geek and someone who studied film I never heard of this movie until I was doing a google search for "movies like Blade Runner" and I must say... Everything you wrote... I'M SOLD!
This film is absolutely mental. The end credits and music are incredible. Also I had no idea the sample for “right here, right now” was from this film, blew my mind when I heard it.
HappyLandOSorrow It got mixed reception because it was ahead of the game. I remember Roger Ebert loved the film and wrote a great review. He was the only critic who saw films with his brain turned on.
Lol yeah agree, I actually didn't like this movie when i 1st saw it, think i was 2 young 2 fully appreciate it, 10 years later i watched it again and was blown away lol
+Inphi You mean Cyberpunk films, cyberpunk's golden age is the 80s where William Gibson invented it with the book Neuromancer [1984]. That and the cyberpunk TV series Max Headroom, and the 1985 pilot movie it's based on. First cyberpunk game: Neuromancer by Interplay [1985], based on the novel. And let's not forget the movie that inspired Gibson to write cyberpunk novels in the first place: Blade Runner.
It’s insane how timely this movie is in America right now. The only thing Strange Days got wrong about the future is thinking people would have to pay for it.
Plus, everything he peddles then can actually be uploaded onto the dark web and be accessible by almost everyone. Put on some cheap VR set, download or stream it, and off you go.
I am confused about how INCREDIBLY GOOD this movie I just watched is. For the first 20 minutes, I thought meh. Then it kept moving upwards and upwards, fell in love with Angela Bassett and it simply skyrocketed till the end. Perfect arc. Perfect performances. Perfect script. Perfect atmosphere. Plus that epic "Right here, right now" happens to be the sample of one of my favorite songs of all time. What a wonderful day.
For any of you who was living in southern Ca. and was into the "techno-house music-rave" scene during the 1990's,there was a large rave event held in downtown L.A. sometime in Sept. 1994,ayear before this movie would be release in theatres.I remember the director or a movie producer was on the bullhorn saying to everyone(about 10,000),"pretend it's New years eve 1999 and cheer when clock strikes midnight". I also remember the group "Dee-Lite" performed live(but was not part of the movie).
I saw this this Monday, ie 2 days before new year's 2020, 20 years after what the movie is supposed to take place. Man. The movie still feels fresh: the technology they use is not too dissimilar from stuff we produce these days. The themes of sexism, race relations etc are as relevant as when the movie came out. One might say the movie sort of predicted the Black lives matter movement. The paranoia and cover ups and the moral dilemmas the characters face, as well as ponderings about the power of media and the media's ability to define the narrative still resonate. The characters are interesting and well set up. The plot and writing is clever and economical. The performances of all the cast is spectacular. And on top of that it has a kickass soundtrack (I really love the 90s alternative music scene). These kinds of movies simply aren't produced that much today. I was impressed by how original and unpredictable the movie felt. You need to see this film.
The political level of this film is crazy. This film is shot in 1995. Three little years after the L.A riots, connected to the Rodney King vs Police trial. Think about what the Rodney King's story is then about Jericho One, the fact that cops do this, while being filmed etc. This film is something. ^^
I mean give me a break. BLM as a "message" or a "movement" is manufactured by affluent liberals in media and this movie was probably also written by people in those same circles. And those types of people tend not to have particularly profound insights into the human condition or the social and political history of this country... In fact a great deal of what your typical BLM acolyte believes about their own society is based on the not-so-subtle messaging fed to them in the TV and movies they grew up on - and notsomuch common sense or real world experiences. The programming from those movies and TV have taught them to interpret those experiences in a particular way. It's really just a watered down version of the communist worldview; IE everything is oppressing you if you're any kind of minority, anything that isn't complete equal outcomes between all groups and individuals is injustice, ethnic groups and sexes are all in a perpetual war for power, if anything is considered normal or expected then it's supremacist and evil, all distinctions are fake and reality is just what people perceive it to be, people don't have agency or moral responsibility for their actions but rather their state is entirely the consequence of the "systems" they were born into -- all that kind of stuff we've been getting berated with in institutional media and academia for decades now. It's the same faulty reasoning that lies at the heart of BLM, and it's the same ideology that's been ascendent in Hollywood pretty much since the Marxists and their left-liberal trained seals took over that industry in the mid to late 20th century. So I don't know if a film like this is so much prescient as much as it's just a piece of media written by people with the same ideological worldview as the people who created all the media that manufactured BLM.
Really? T2:JD is still my favorite 90s sci-fi. With Total Recall (1990) a very close 2nd and The Fifth Element (1997) in 3rd. The Matrix & The Thirteenth Floor (both 1999) and Dark City (1998) were awesome too.
***** I have the Aliens quadrilogy, and yes i too agree that the 1st two are the best. The Abyss was cool. The Thing, was ok but it was not what id call sci-fi. As for 5th element, i get everyone has different tastes. I think part of the reason i liked it (aside from futuristic advances) im a big fan of dystopian/totalitarian movies (nineteen eighty-four being my favorite) like brazil, blade runner, thx-1138, logans run, metropolis, dark city, robocop etc etc.
You know what I love most about this trailer? If it came out now-a-days, you KNOW they would spoil what's on "the tape", you LNOW they would show you exactly what it contains and spoil the tension of the whole movie before you even saw it. This trailer keeps it from you, lets you know what's going on without ruining what it's all about. I really want to see this now, just to find out what's so gosh-darn important about the tape!
Mad Hatter totally agree! Trailers don't leave much to the imagination anymore because we live in a time where everyone wants what they want. No one likes the mysteriousness of anything anymore.
This might be James Cameron's best script. The movie is just brilliant through and through. People likely got turned off by the length and the slow burn at the beginning, but it has amazing writing and acting. If it were released as some netflix miniseries today, it would garner rave reviews
I was just watching a youtube video of a guy with a GoPro riding his bike along streets in China during a thunderstorm. Suddenly I realised Strange Days was a reality. It might not be connected directly to our brains yet, but it may as well be - regardless it WILL happen in the future
Tom Sizemore's death brought me here. So sad that this movie is almost completely forgotten. I saw it in the movie theaters back in the day, when they still made awsome movies on a regular basis.
That's good you did. I read it didn't do well when it theatrically came out, it was extremely underrated when it came out and James Cameron freaken wrote the script it should have done better. I'm glad to hear you were one of the few people who supported the movie when it came out. I couldn't have done it in 1995 because I was 9 years old in that year.
every once and a while this movie comes up in conversation and i have download and watch it again. Not a perfect move, but SO good, I love the themes, the tech, the hammed up acting and the cool quotes. Damn its so good
Strange Days is underrated masterpiece - unique storyline, great acting, directing, producing... Ralph Fiennes (Lenny Nero) is always brilliant no matter it's comedy, drama or sci-fi movie. Angela Bassett did a great job as well. The final kiss scene was so sweet. I don't know why but this film reminds me another underrated SCI-FI/Action movies of the 90's - The Lawnmower Man, Johnny Mnemonic, Deathline (Redline), New World Disorder, Futuresport, Barb Wire......
I feel really bad about Kathryn Bigelow, not her making this film but AFTER it was her putting 42 million dollars and earning back 8 million dollars from the theaters. I love this movie, and I am so glad Kathryn is getting more attention to her films from the theaters.
Cameron shmamelon! This movie has Bigelow's signature all over it: camera in the eyes of characters, pumped up adrenaline to the max with "shoot from the hip" style, reality kicking you in the gut asking what a hell you are figting for while you are chased or you are chasing someone or something....Point Break, Blue Steel, even The Hurt Locker gives you these sensations inspite of the different speed. Yes , the screenplay is Cameron's but I bet he never imagine it like Kathryn did.
It's called 'Selling Jesus' by Skunk Anansie (a female artist named Skin does lead vocals). It's the first song on the Strange Days soundtrack. Excellent sdtrk you should definitely get your hands on. Thanks to the poster who uploaded this. One of my favorite movies of all time!
Awesome move; totally underrated. Great script by James Cameron, solid direction by Kathryn Bigelow; memorable performances by Fiennes, Bassett and Michael Wincott.
In an interview Kathryn Bigelow equates the "Playback" in Strange Days as a cinema metaphor. Which makes sense. We go to the movies to experience other's experiences. From that perspective Ralph Fiennes' character is a filmmaker. Only this takes it to a whole other level of course. Very interesting idea.
One of my favorite movies, as an added bonus Juliette Lewis actually looked half way like a girl and not the 12 year old boy she normally looks like. Great flick
Luckily, german distributors Kinowelt released it on Blu. I own a copy, and can recommend it. This movie made a huge impression on 14-year old me when I saw it in theaters - a real trip and Kathryn Bigelow is the most underrated (action) director of our times.
+Rashad Moore Here it is: www.amazon.de/Strange-Days-20th-Anniversary-Blu-ray/dp/B00TASMCWM/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1447519533&sr=1-1&keywords=strange+days
This movie was awesome, saw it in the theaters as a shorty. It's amazing how back then this tech seemed so unattainable, but fast foward to modern day and the invention of Google Glass and wearables - we're kinda at the precursor of the capabilities displayed in this movie. People knock on this film alot, which is understandable as execution is off sometimes. But alot of the social commentary expressed in this film (black lives vs blue lives, addiciton to technology, top down corruption) was ahead of it's time. 👍
Kinda ballsy setting your cyberpunk, virtual reality thriller in the futuristic year of 1999 when your movie is coming out in 1995. Underrated thriller.
i remember when i seen this trailer when it first came out in 95, i never got to see it until 97 when i was hella stone and i still watch it to this day.
I am a huge fan of scifi, both literature and movies. This is a masterpiece in its own category. Strange Days was a movie, that after watching it, I just looked at my best friends and we kept being like..."wow!!" Watch it! :-D
This movie was so ahead of its time, it even predicted the death of 2Pac a year later. In the film there's a rapper who was exposing things in music and was killed for it
This movie seriously deserves a rerelease. I haven't been able to find it in any store, and it seems to be fading from memory. There were so many powerful moments from this film, and it grabs you right from the start. It was ahead of its time and deserves more attention.
I first saw this film on the Sci fi channel back in November 1998 and fell in love with it and I own the soundtrack since 2000 and brought the vhs from salvation army thrift store in Nevada 5 years ago. 💜
I've seen this film back then vhs tape--rented it. I liked it a lot! Got my surprised that it was directed by an unknown female director named kathryn bigelow. And I said I wanna watch more of her films!! And have to wait for long years before she was able to make another.
Absolutely. It's one of my favorite performances by Ralph and I remember Roger Ebert, who loved the movie, called Ralph's performance one of his top ten of 1995. 😊
well it failed because it was pulled from theaters in the first week . all Because of the rodney king riots, they thought it would incite racial tension. Not many got to see it in the theaters, it barely survived off it's second week.
Agreed. It's written by James Cameron, which is also why it's so good.
It's a shame I first saw this in a matinee on a Thursday, the last day it was at the theater- the second week of release.

One of the "secret" masterpieces of the 1990s.

It only took 25 years to get here.
Strange Days, Hackers, Ghost in the Shell all came out in 1995 great year for cyberpunk.
David Curry ahh the 90s. the golden age of cyberpunk.

+David Curry i did not know that
As long as we're excluding Tank Girl and Johnny Mnemonic then yes it was a good year for cyberpunk films
What about Brainstorm (1983). A movie which seems more like pioneer work within the realms of Cyberpunk
One of my all-time faves and probably the most underrated modern classic ever.
Underrated film. Pure cyberpunk bliss.
A forgotten masterpiece. At the time it was a solid movie. Now? It's absolutely a beautiful capture moment of the 90's. 10/10

Nah. Ralph is far more talented and he just nails this character. He's also more humble and less self- obsessed than Bradley Cooper.

But alot of the social commentary expressed in this film (black lives vs blue lives, addiciton to technology, top down corruption) was ahead of it's time. 👍
Very much so. The only problem is that the BLM narrative is mostly bullshit.
Thats what the masses always say...
Tom Ogburn Pardon?
I think a great story is something that makes you feel many emotions in one sitting. Strange Days did just that, it was just that great of a film.
Strange days has become modern day 2020
This movie was so ahead of its time, it even predicted the death of 2Pac a year later.
I just found it and ordered the blu ray
Literally one of the greatest films I've ever seen and the script too, its up there with Surrogates :D
this film is beyond human capacity.. a great casting, a great production, a great story, a great soundtrack... kudos to kathryn bigelow!
I've seen this film back then vhs tape--rented it. I liked it a lot! Got my surprised that it was directed by an unknown female director named kathryn bigelow. And I said I wanna watch more of her films!! And have to wait for long years before she was able to make another.
Incredibly overlooked, underrated masterpiece of a film that no one talks or knows about. This deserves more praise than ever.
fucking AWESOME movie
I agree
Loved Angela Bassett in this.. Convincingly capable & tough, yet feminine & gorgeous at the same time.
Director Kathryn Bigelow is a genius. Plain and simple
Underrated Classic that isn't even available online. What a shame, this movie deserves an audience
One of THE best trailers!
We're living it
Mind blowing movie- and Ralph Fiennes is awesome in it, just goes to show how much range he has.
Absolutely. It's one of my favorite performances by Ralph and I remember Roger Ebert, who loved the movie, called Ralph's performance one of his top ten of 1995. 😊
This is one of the most stylish movies 🎥 ever made for some reason it failed at the box office and it’s not remembered but it’s fucking awsome
agree
well it failed because it was pulled from theaters in the first week . all Because of the rodney king riots, they thought it would incite racial tension. Not many got to see it in the theaters, it barely survived off it's second week.
@swordinhand8356 the Rodney king riots happened in 1992. This movie was shown in 1995.
This trailer is pure 90's bliss...
I saw Vincent D'Onofrio in there... I've definitely gotta check this out!
In a glorified cameo. But watch it anyway
"We Don't SAY his Name...."
Ralphs change in accent always gets me in this one lol
I have been looking for this movie for fucking decades! It's like a hole in my life puzzle getting filled in..
My fave movie as i was growing up.❤
WHAT???
My head is officially blown. I had no friggin' clue! Why is this film so underrated??
This movie is so amazing. I don't understand why it wasn't a big commercial hit.
I like this movie it was so good and mace was awesome 😃😃😄😄
This was a great movie
One of the most criminally underrated movies of all time!!!
Good film.i was in my first year at college, and in 1999.. I was in Manchester with my sister partying NYE
"rite here rite now" quite from the movie that was used in a fatboy slim as a sample to rite here rite now. ;-)
angela bassett played her ass off in this movie she sure handle that firepower well
oldy but goldy! movie is about 20 years old! but still kick ass
congrats kathryn
Very underated movie of the 90s
