When I saw the Beatles concert TV program thru my parents’ TV, I was only 13 year boy in the remote region of Japan in 1966 July. It was not good quality of video program yet, but I enjoyed seeing real Beatles performance at that time. Now I’m really impressed to see this video. Quite good quality of sound and picture.
Well, there is a story behind it. The Beatles, in the last two years of touring, were so used to not hearing themselves because of all that unholy screaming , that their musicianship really went downhill. They just couldn’t be bothered to even put anything resembling soul into it. Why? No one could hear the music! That all changed at the first Japan concert. The audience were silent and polite (no doubt aided by the fact that there were so many policemen deployed, an average of one every three members of the audience). The road manager Neil Aspinall recounts that they sounded like shit, the harmonies out of tune and the music lazy. The Beatles were so shocked at how crummy they played, they put in a whole afternoon of rehearsals in the hall of the hotel they were staying in, in order to get their shit together. Which they did. The footage we can all see is from the second concert. Apple withdrew the first concert. The people who saw it (including me) they all agree: an all-too-rare opportunity to see the greatest band ever sounding like a two-bit garage school combo....
Japanese crowd is always like that. Watch "R - Roselia live" (In that live concert, they are also performing in Nippon Budokan, which is where The Beatles are performing in this video)
You´right almost no screaming there. Please listen carefully to Harrison´s riff on Day Triper was awful. Sorry. Makes me wonder if he played on the original recording of the single ( EP or whatever) or maybe a session guitarrist did the job for him.
The Beatles wanted money and they realized people went to their concerts to see them not to hear them , that made them careless about quality music performance
Some Trivia of Budokan Live: The footage were filmed by Baseball TV live team of the broadcaster NTV, because there were rare experience of live show in a big concert hall in 1960's. John and George looked like being with downcast eye, because the spot light toward the stage was so strong. NTV producer praised Paul's professionalism. The sound of this footage seemed to record in empty arena seat. Audiences were omitted from arena seat for security sake. Police strictly prohibited audiences standing up while the show. This footage were designed as the peak at "Yesterday" , most popular song in Japan. Dissolve was only used in "Yesterday". NTV owned AC-100 Super Deluxe amplifier was used in this afternoon show. The Beatles's AC-100 was set from the night show of this day, because it reached Budokan in this afternoon. A audience of Night show of this day said that George's guitar sounded like as "Paperback Writer on Record" . A audience of this show said that Paul's Bass and Ringo's Bass drum were so strong and impressive. Epstein refused broadcasting the show of June 30 night and asked NTV to film July 1st afternoon show adding footage of audiences. Epstein asked NTV filming the night show of this day but NTV refused. NTV already spent so expensive color VTR tapes in two show. TV broadcasting of the show was already set on this night.
Very first rock concert utilizing legendary Nippon Budokan Judo Arena. Beatles had 5 sold out shows at Budokan just 2 months before their final live concert at Candlestick park.
Thanks for uploading the whole gig. Interesting to see the opening act as well. It seems Ringo was having a bit of a rough day, at least he sometimes does not look so amused. They all seem to calm down at least a little bit, compared to previous concerts. But they still sound great nonetheless. I like If I Needed Someone. The only Harrison song they performed live.
By this time they were sick and tired of being the Fab 4 and couldn't give a shit how they sounded, they wanted off this insane roller coaster ride where nobody could hear them anyway and wanted to stay in the studio...thus...Sgt Pepper!
What is remarkable is that, few months before issuing "Revolver", right alongside Paul's exploration of Luciano Berio and John Cage 's avant-garde, George's study of the sitar and Hindustani raga, John's immersion in the hippy acid-rock coming from America, they were still hawking the same old songs, many of which dragged around since their Hamburg dsys. It was demeaning towards their new-found prowess, it was boring and you can read in their faces that they considered it nothing more than a day job at the office.....
The acoustics are cheesy. This is a level that makes me laugh. In Japan, there was only such acoustics. This is a valuable record. But this acoustics is terrible, isn't it? I feel sorry for them.

Beatles live concer vodca in jjapan 1960

10 years later.....Cheap Trick would grace the stage and provide one of the best life performances of all time.
The Fab 4 did not just make music , they made magic .
Very polite crowd...no screaming during songs....Beatles couldn't say "We can't hear ourselves" here.

The Beatles live in Japan 1966 singing if I need some one classic song from the sixties good song fifty years old still sounds good now
The screaming from girls here reminds me of KISS at Budokan in 1977 and Cheap Trick at Budokan in 1978. Budokan magic !
One of the rarest concerts to exist. Why is there no full one?
if I upload it on youtube it will be copyrighted, so to watch the full concert there is a link in the description

This was in 1966 and it looks like it was filmed in 1986 it might have been the type of camera they were using to film
It's because this copy seems to come from a VHS. The original film quality must be better
RCA TK-42 or RCA TK-43. Awful cameras honestly

They probably tuned down the vocals because of their audience

This a weird thought but this is only 10 years after the devastating 24 hour Tokyo bombing.
