The centre was conceived as a Laboratory for Decision-making. Hello, at my school there were 3 units for the thesis: complex project, building restoration and urbanism. And I picked urbanism because I like sociology as well and am preoccupied by the relationship between city-suburbs-rural. I personally am about to choose where to live in the future and I am attracted to the suburban house with a garden, but in the European context, the growth of suburbs actually damage the city, so European cities want to use more of the non-functional land within the city (called brownfield) and develop it in an integrated matter. So my subject for my thesis was: Urban regeneration of an industrial site...but with the personal theme: how do you make an attractive, affordable living for family life within the city context? In Romania precisely, more than 90% of people buy their own house/apartment at some point. Almost no one prefers to live in rent, except if commuting or as student.
I'm only thinking about it, so I don't really have ideas to share yet! But I really liked how you put things simply and used what you've done as examples! This is really helpful! Thank you so much for explaining!
Hey Drew. I am studying in the last year of architecture from Mumbai, India. I went through a range of topics and the problem in society that pissed me off the most was the lack of human interaction. People have lost the ability to sit with another person or by themselves and just be without being connected to some sort of technology. This is leading to numerous mental health issues which furthermore leads to physical health issues. The only way to tackle this was to bring people together and do any activity together. Maybe it be playing a sport or yoga. Hence I chose my thesis topic to be a Public Activity Center. I wanted to ask you how many weeks does it take to design after having all the requirements and area program ready. Also, what is the focus on during the jury? Is it on design, presentation, the way you explain, following the state regulations, detailing?
my problem would be to ensure that as little of the surrounding environment of the building is harmed meanwhile integrating parts of the building with nature.

Currently I'm studying landscape architecture and my idea at first was to look at how landscape design can promote health and well being - however now that I'm coming to the deadline for my final written thesis proposal funnily enough its narrowed to dealing with an ageing society and designing spaces outside of a hospital hospice. Glad to find some similarity in direction - and I totally agree with the noble and selfish reasoning for choosing a different thesis topic - I also face this feeling like I'm doing this thesis just so I can pass my degree and I have no other choice but to 'front' a noble guise so what I'm really trying to say is I hope my teachers will 'buy' my noble cause and hopefully give me a pass :(
+Jonathan Tsui well, it’s not that the professors will like your “selfish” project better necessarily. The reason why it give you an advantage is because it would be easier for you to stay motivated and do the work. But if you can be motivated to do the work while choosing something that’s a noble cause then it’s just as well. I actually think that’s an interesting topic to choose. My grandfather passed away in a hospice center. It was obviously a really difficult time, but I specifically appreciated that the building (and the landscape) where he stayed was really nice. I think it helped me personally cope with the stress of loosing someone. Loosing people is awful enough, being in an inhumane hospital with florescent lights and no windows doesn’t help. I think a hospice center is an important space. I hope the thesis goes well :)

Hey Drew, I am going to do my thesis in the Next semester(i.e February 2017). I am studying in India. As I am a person who loves football and if at all I did not join B.arch I would've done Psychology as my degree. So that's how much i love psychology and i also love to do humanitarian works. When I clubbed these interests of mine and looked into issues, I found that In india majority of the talents are not recognized as they lie in the economically weaker sections of the society. Henceforth, I thought why not an academy for football where there is residential facility for the talented lads along with sports psychology amenities and meditation facilities. Apparently I came across this article where the author speaks about the lack of desire to win, desire to change, attitude and a belief to win which is holding all back. so its not about replicating the facilities that the medal winning countries have we can win medals. so now i am confused whether to go on or tell me how to develop. Could you Kindly tell me how to go about proceeding now on?

+Muhasin Mohamed your thesis statement should be a clear statement. As you do more research your project/thesis may change some. But it's important at every stage to state the thesis as clearly as possible. That will help you identify problems or vagueness in the objective itself. So if you had to make a thesis statement in one or two sentences, what would it be?

Hi! I'm in the fourth year currently and just started making a list of topics for my thesis. I'm really stuck with one topic though. Its about a recycling mall in the midst of the Mumbai city. Since i reside in Mumbai, the waste around really annoys me. Also the high scale of unemployment is an issue. So an architectural way to channelize this waste while providing employment and knowledge building for the locals is what i had in mind. Let me know what you think

Hey Drew. I'm currently doing my undergratuate thesis which aims to come up with speculative designs of houses for people who are into cryptocurrency mining. Initially, I plan to conduct a Historical comparative analysis about the impacts of currencies through architecture (how the growth of economies led to te establishment of structures such as banks, stock exchanges, etc.) simply to correlate the two fields. What my study argues is that at this point in time, cryptocurrencies are trending mediums of trade, and give the people the opportunity to be in charge of circulating currencies and make extra income out of it at the comfort of their own homes (mining) Therefore, residential typologies will be the directly affected typology for my study. What do you think? I'd like to know your insight on the idea because right now i'm having trouble with convincing potential panel members to approve it. Although my thesis adviser believes in the idea too.
+Marco Angelo Torres I don’t see how someone’s interest in crypto currency would affect the the spatial needs of their house. ....what if you studied cryptocurrency’s potential effects on banks? But still, most banking is actually done online as it is. The problem is that an architectural thesis has to be material. And crypto currency is immaterial. Maybe I’m ignorant about crypto currency, but I don’t see how it will have a bigger affect on the built environment than credit cards did. It may change the economy and the way money flows and they way people do business, but I don’t think crypto currency will substantially change our needs of the built environment.

Hey Drew, I'll be doing my thesis next year, but in a different city and country from my current place of residence. I don't know the city that well yet and I feel like the most successful thesis projects are contextually local because your peers and professors will understand them and sympathise a lot better. Do you have any comments or thoughts?
It might be smart to do something completely different from the local thesis projects. Perhaps you could take aspects of your native city or country and combine it with aspects of the current place of residence. For example, the vernacular architecture of your home country architecture has benefits x ,y, z. And the current place of residence has problems a, b, c. You could try to incorporate inter cultural solutions to the local problems. I think that could give you a very unique project that would stand out from the rest.
I am doing my master's thesis right now, a research project where I chose a very abstract topic relating philosophical idea of a glitch(instead of just a malfunction in a technical system, it's the phenomenological experience of a glitch moment) with architecture. After hearing your video I feel like maybe what a am trying to achieve is adding something to the discourse but that is more the next level and not a master's project and honestly I am very overwhelmed with my own task I gave myself. So what is your advice for me to steer this into the right direction?

You get better as you go. The tasks you will have to accomplish in 7 years will be difficult when you get there, but they won't seem as impossible as they do today.

Mean while I want to study architecture, do you think I should focus on the computer parts like autocad or reading books from like Francis D. K ching about hand drawing and structure and history of architecture. I want to read more than computer to get a feel for architecture and a better grip if you understand? What would you recommend I do, learn computer or read books about architecture (history, terms, structure, hand drawing)
Do which ever one you feel like doing. What I mean by that is pick which one you are the most excited about and you will learn more. If you try to make yourself focus on one or the other it will become a chore and you will probably procrastinate and never get around to either of them. Do whichever excites you the most in the moment.

I picked my university (Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU)) because it was instate, so it was cheaper for me than going out of state. But if you have options, consider that some schools are more theoretical/artsy and some are more grounded/based in construction. I think the ideal school actually balances both. Check out their work online or in person. At SPSU the architecture department was in the “College of Architecture and Construction Management” it was grounded in reality, but also I could see they valued the artistic side of architecture. Some school have the arch. department in the “College of Fine Arts” or something. That’s more likely to be artsy.
I am asking because I see there is a lot of programs in Arch. Schools. Some schools are Design Schools, Art Schools...and I want a school that when I finish the program I get certified as an Architect... Right now I am in Miami but i am thinking on going back to NJ
Look for a NAAB accredited program. That will be either a 5 year B.ARCH degree or a 4 year bachelors degree + a 2 year M.ARCH. But you can learn more from NCARB or NAAB at their websites.
