    I am a nicu nurse and when I tell people, it bugs me so much if they say it must be heartbreaking. IT ISN'T! There are heartbreaking stories of course, but it's not a heartbreaking place, it's not a heartbreaking job, and 90% of the stories are not heartbreaking. They are amazing, the babies are incredible, it's a happy place, a lovely unit and we love working with our families and celebrating the milestones.

      I’ve wanted to talk to someone who is a NICU nurse for quite a while to get a feel of what it’s like and how to get to do exactly what I want, I’d love if we could privately talk!!:))

    NICU nurses are the best. They are some of the most compassionate and caring people I’ve ever met. They really let you bond with your baby as much as they can.

    Thank you for what you do! Our daughter was born 15 weeks early at 1 lb 10oz. She was one of the smallest babies in the NICU. Our nurses became our family for the next 3 months. They saved her life and we are forever grateful.

    Thank you for what you do! ❤️ my baby girl was a 30 weeker. She is also my first. She is now 8 months, and is doing amazing. The 7 weeks she spent in the NICU was the most emotional time in my entire life. Her nurses, nurse practitioners and doctors were so compassionate, so empathetic, and so confident. They took such amazing care of my precious little one, and they helped take care of me and my husband emotionally! It takes such a special person! I am so glad there are people in the world like you! ❤️

      Hope you made it through college and are a terrific NICU nurse now! My daughter just celebrated her second anniversary as a NICU nurse after getting her 4 year BSN degree, though it took her 5 years to finish it. She had to take 1 year off between completing her prerequisites and getting her AA degree and getting to start her nursing college classes, because she could not get accepted into her first university's nursing college, despite having a 3.9 GPA in all her undergrad courses!! Her first university that she did her AA at was tiny and only had space for 35 new BSN students in two start dates each year, and over 1000 students would apply each semester!! So even though she had almost perfect grades and did pretty good on her TEAS nursing test, she still had to ace a frightening panel interview each application period. She tried 3 different semesters, and while she did make the waitlist for each semester she applied, there were 36 other applicants who scored just a tiny bit better than her and so she had to give up her dream of going to that nursing school at the University nearest our house, where she felt safe, but did het accepted at a more respected, world renowned university further away. It cost me, her mom, a lot more money as I had to pay for her to love in an apartment plus her tuition at this farther away university, but she thrived and graduated Magna Cum Laud!! Now a happy NICU nurse for the most part! Underpaid and over-worked due to understaffing by greedy corporate hospital, of course, but loves helping these babies and their families through the toughest time in their lives!! So if you are thinking about becoming a NICU nurse, be ready to work hard to get there, but realize that it will be an emotional but fulfilling job if you feel that calling!!

      The Nurse Nook it's great. It's very fast paced. You'll end up using parts of your brain that you didn't even know you had lol. At first it was difficult getting used to it all but you get used to it after a while. I was working in peds before I went to NICU. Thought it would be similar but I was completely wrong.

    Oh gosh I am 25 years old, and I still don't know for sure what I want in life. But Neonatal is definitely one I'm looking into (Doula is one as well) While I definitely want to be financially secure I want to go into a job that fulfills me, something that is helping others and making a difference even if its only for one person to someone as important towards a family like their tiny little preemie baby. Neonatal might be my calling or something else but I thank you for the info and will be following you and maybe this will be my calling :) THANK YOU for putting yourself out there to help people like me decide if this is what I want

    Do you go to college to be a neonatal nurse? Or do you just go to be an RN and then become one? How does the whole process work, like what steps do you have to take to become one?

    • @jujutube1111
      @jujutube1111 7 років тому +2

      Heyyitsbellaa you should get a bachelors degree at a 4 year college to be the most competitive. There are associates degree from a 2 year college to become an RN as well. Some hospitals have RN programs 2 or 3 years but I think those are phasing out more, especially in my region.

    • @SuturesandStuffies
      @SuturesandStuffies 7 років тому +11

      Miss Courtney That wasn't her question.. You go and either get a BSN or a ADN and then take the NCLEX to become an RN. Then you can apply for neonatal icu positions in hospitals. So you become an RN first and then pick the NICU as your specialty.

    • @1nurseKathi

      Yes... you need to get your RN first, pass NCLEX, then find an open position. Many NICU's (in big children's hospitals and smaller community hospitals) have new graduate or nurse residency programs that train you in the specialty. After a couple years there are additional certifications that you get after passing exams.

    My dream job is to be an anesthesiologist but ... I suck at chemistry and math. I can relate to premature babies because I was one so , I’d like to major in neonatal nursing 💕

      Start with Nursing... then take your time and put your sight's on being a Nurse Anesthetists later... this will be the best of both :-)

    What's the difference while being a NICU practitioner and a pediatrician? Do pediatric nurses still work with premature children?

    • @enterusername2855
      @enterusername2855 6 років тому

      Shanelle Pierce a NICU nurse is what she explained. a pediatrician is a medical doctor who treats babies, and adolescents. You can be a Pediatrician that specializes in Neonatology (NICU) with extra training after medical school. Pediatric nurses tend to work with babies and children .. to be a NICU nurse you have to go through special training. Hope this clarified!

    I'm interested in becoming a NICU practitioner, but my question is do have to be a NICU nurse practitioner first inorder to work in the NICU or can you be a reg. Rn and work your way up?

    • @PrettyKay00
      @PrettyKay00 5 років тому

      Hey love RN and NP or NNP are completely different titles. You have to become a RN (registered nurse) first then you go back to school to become a NP (nurse practitioner) or a NNP (neonatal nurse practitioner). I hope this helps!

      Way to go.... as a NICU Nurse and NP, I work with some of the best Neonatologists in the world...you mentioned that you heard "it's really difficult"... did you mean difficult to get through all the training, to get a job, or working with sick babies??
      Just like everything you just need to take it one step at a time! Focus on each step, learn all you can, and apply that to the next.
      The time will fly by.. I promise... and before you know it you will be caring for little babies!!!

    can you be a nicu nurse and a labor and delivery nurse at the same time or do you have to choose one?

    • @1nurseKathi
      @1nurseKathi 5 років тому +1

      There are some nurses who float between both.... but it is pretty rare anymore. Typically if you don't specialize in one area you will get less acute patients when you do work. Over time, if you build a relationship with the Charge Nurses and show initiative and pitch in there are always opportunities to prove your self (codes, deliveries, new admissions) and you will gain a broader experience...
      A Level 3 NICU is very specialized and cares for the sickest patients. . so I would recommend picking one specialty for 3 to 5 years, then switching over to the other for 3 to 5 years; then you will have a great depth of skills in both areas.
      I'll give you a real life example --- Since I'm a NICU Nurse -- when I worked in a small community hospital I floated between attending C/S deliveries, post-partum (but mostly they gave me the babies to care for (not the mom), and caring for any babies that needed specialty care (respiratory distress, phototherapy). But I never was responsible for laboring patients.

    i have a question that hopefully someone can answer 😊 so i should be starting college at the beginning of next year & at first i want to get my ADN & then eventually want to go back after working for 1 year and get my BSN. am i able to become a NICU nurse even though i only will have my ADN or would i have to wait till i go get my BSN??

    • @1nurseKathi
      @1nurseKathi 5 років тому

      YES... I started that way. You may have a bit more of a challenge getting a job as a new grad in NICU at a larger Children's Hospital that has Magnet Nursing Designation because this accreditation requires that they keep a certain % of BSN staff nurses... However.... you can bridge from ADN to BSN/MSN, and many hospitals pay for your continuing education and degrees. Check out my reply above to Mae Flower where I outlined a path

    I want this job but people tell me it is boring but i was born a premature child and it makes me so emotional seeing this. However, I feel like i can be an example to mothers and families that their babies can make it outside of a hospital.
    What do you guys think?

      Rachel Osei omg same! 😍 I was a premature baby as well. Born at 23 weeks. I was in the hospital for about 3 to 4 months. And I really think I can give hope to the family and tell the family my story and right now I am 15 years old and my nana told me my story over and over again and I really love it! I wanted to be a neonatal nurse ever since last year!! I'm a freshman in highschool now and I can't wait to become one!! ❤️❤️

      You absolutely can do it.... There are many stories of nurses and doctors who were premature infants.... I host an annual NICU Conference called The ONE Conference, and this year we will have two presenters at the conference who were both former NICU babies. One is a nurse and one is a Pediatric Neurologist. Check it out here -- www.synapsecare.com

      lovelyy one incase she won’t reply, I also found it boring. Moms are with their baby most of the time (which is encouraged) so you don’t really have much to do. All you regularly do in 12 hours is a couple of newborn assessments, maternal assessments, and health teaching.
