ROAMS01E25 Why I changed my Rooftop Tent! (2019) [Jimny JB74 ]

  • My Journey with the Suzuki Jimny has been incredible so far. I have gotten to use some of the best Overlanding equipment out there, but like everything in life there isn't one simple solution for everything. I decided I needed to take off the Eezi Awn Blade rooftop Tent and try something different. This is where the Eezi Awn Jazz comes in, its Eezi Awns most accessible tent and one of their most popular too, and I think this style of tent might be the answer for the Jimny, because it will give us more room on the roofrack to put fuel and water. Lets see how it goes.

    Good move getting rid of some of the weight off the roof, bad move replacing it. The Jimny is designed to be light and nimble. Grossly overloading the vehicle will comprise it's dynamics. For touring you may have to opt for a very light weight trailer (Jimnys aren't good tow vehicles either). For more rugged trips a tent is the only option. Filling the vehicle with heavy draw systems etc will add to the pain. We need to think creatively when setting up our Jimnys.
    BTW I have lived with all of the first 3 generations of Jimny since 1979 and travelled around most of Australia with them. Currently waiting for my new one.

      I think you are very right Rob, I think there are still a couple options to try out for my build (lighter weight ones too) however this is all about trying different setups and seeing their pros and cons, and allowing people to make their own decisions. The vehicle does perform much better now in comparison to having the blade, but quite honestly I’ve been driving around this past week with nothing on the roofrack and the difference between it now and with the new rooftoptent isn’t all that much; and I’d feel quite comfortable using it like this, the drawer system is actually super light weight aluminum, and isn’t much more than 10kgs anyways, so again I’m not too concerned about it especially considering actually having access to the fridge. At the end of the day each person is as entitled to build their vehicle in what ever crazy way they deem fit. This is a hobby that so many people enjoy, I believe we should let the creative juices flow and find out what works best for each of us, and at the end of the day enjoy building your vehicle to suit you.

      @@RoamOverlanding I wholeheartedly agree, we must do what's suits us best, we can't all travel the same path. And if you can get some corporate support along the way all the better. We all have our preferences and biases my pet hate is weight. It gets tiresome changing down gears on the highway or wondering if you're going to run out of steam on a gnarly hill. This is the lot of the Jimny driver, in any relationship there are comprises. I keep weight to a minimum so that I can go where I want when I want.
      Besides, you can't get away from it all if you take it all with you.
      Just my opinion.
      Keep up the good work.

    The advantage of the Jimny is its light weight and compact design. I’m thinking that only by sticking to the Jimny principles can you get the best out of it. I reckon a rooftop tent and weight on the roof isn’t going to work but I tip my cap to you for putting the effort in to test all ideas. Good job!👍

    We had one of these and lived (mostly) in it for 1.5 years around all of South America. They have their ups and downs, but what I did like - was how spacious are they when they open. They take little space on the roof while providing more than 2m long bed. And they're very airy with all 4 windows open.
    Also, what people don't talk about with the "hard body"/fiberglass RTTs is the ladder. I had a beautiful Maggiolina rented this summer, and I have to say, this canvas flip-to-open RTTs have superior design with regards to the ladder. I mean, imagine it rains and there's a lot of mud or dirty ground where you camp. Then you put your ladder into the mud, only to have to put it inside the tent when you want to move on - and the ladder is dirty from the ground, your shoes, rain, everything. And if you put it in the cover first, you can become dirty yourself + waste the time putting it in and out all the time. I had the opportunity to find this on my own, when it was heavily raining and the whole site where I camped was covered in thick mud.
    With this design, you just lift the ladder, use it to close the tent and it stays neatly on the top of the tent, and not making a mess or having to put it in a bag.
    Someone said opening & closing is more hassle - for one person, it is a little bit. For two and with some practice, it took us 4.5 minutes to fold it up completely, and we even had an extra mattress inside we had to put in the car. I actually made a video of that for people who didn't believe us. :)
    I look forward to see how you'll like it. :)

    • @RoamOverlanding
      @RoamOverlanding  5 років тому

      This is exactly how I feel after the trip with it. The ladder is the only downside of the Eezi Awn Blade. it does come with a protective bag, but like you said its a whole new situation just to get it in the back and you could be using that time on the flipflop tent. We definitely got better at it by the end of the weekend, and I think with a couple of trips under our belt, we will definitely get it down to a fine art :D

  • @jamesmazurstudios
    @jamesmazurstudios 5 років тому +12

    Smart changes. When space is such a premium you need to focus on not just the tent but also food, water and fuel.

    • @RoamOverlanding
      @RoamOverlanding  5 років тому +2

      100% it’s fine to not worry for weekend trips; but when it comes to traveling for extended periods of time, it’s downright dangerous not to have enough fuel and water. It has to take president over comfort at some point.

    Looks like a good compromise. I considered a trailer for my purposes. My conclusion was that if I knew the terrain and route, a trailer would have been a good idea, hence the AluCab roof conversion for my Troopy. For exploring unknown areas, I didn't want to risk a trailer. Mind you, don't listen to me, all I do is watch UA-cam and surf the web - the Troopy isn't ready yet :)

    For me the tent setup you commit to should dictate the type of tent you end up using. eg, Lets say you do the Lebombo trail where pitch every night and break down in the morning it would be best to stick to a rooftop type setup. It is quick and easy for those types of trips. But if you end up doing a trip to Kgalagadi and end up staying 3 plus days in one place an off-vehicle setup such as a dome tent and gazebo is best. You can leave your camp behind do a trail and return to a much more comfortable setup. Its good to have both to your disposal.

      @@RoamOverlanding If you have a high ceiling or no ceiling in your garage one can always opt for a block and tackle or pulley system. That makes life easy to remove it. Only issue is the brackets of the tent/roofrack that takes some time to undo but I rather have that than have a quick release bracket that I just dont trust.

    What about towing a baby trailer instead? It would only have to be something like a 4' x 3' weight approx 100kg and it would allow you to remove everything from the roof and keep the balance of the Jimny.

    Not a massive fan of that rooftop. I originally really liked the idea but after more research, the Jimny is not the car for one. I’d love to see a tent that attaches via the tow hitch and sits flush to the rear door. It would fold up to drive and fold down when you want to use it. (Maybe even on a swing arm so you can open the door easily). I suggest you get a small trailer for the Jimny and make it into a custom camper trailer. Great work though! Love the videos

    I prefer pop-up RTT than the flip out ones myself. In fact I'll shortly be getting a James Baroud Explorer RTT. But you've got to work with what you have. I have a Landcruiser which can easily fit one of these things on top and won't even notice it. If I had a Jimny, I don't think I'll bother with a RTT for the reasons you've already mentioned in your video. But you're in Africa, where large wild carnivorous animals roam the plains. Here in Australia we don't have that issue - except maybe for some wild Dingoes in the outback or Fraser Island.

    A set up similar to the clam shell design that packs snaller and folds out to the side with way less steps would be a good middle ground (They do exist). These ones with the cover are just so fiddly and you also get covered in dust packing them up. Either that, a quick set up tent or a mini camper trailer are possible options.

    Sincerely? I think if you don't mind to spend 15 minutes to set up the tent, you may as well just have a normal tent... It will take much less space and will weight much less. At the end of the day, taking 15 min. to set up the tent is not less than annoying, especially at night. Another suggestion? use a longer rack that also sits on the front window or bumper... You can find this idea in some Land Rover Defender and series used for expeditions.

      @RoamOverlanding  7 місяців тому

      Haha! No worries! So these flippy floppy tents are mainly nice in hot, dry climates; they tend to struggle a bit in bad wind and the extreme cold, but they do manage okay, and it’s a great place to start! You can always sell it second hand when/if you decide to upgrade again. Another good option if you’re in the cape, is rent a tent from GoCamp for a weekend and see what it’s like for you. There are definitely many reasons why a hardshell tent is so much more expensive, and personally I would use a good quality ground tent in the mean time while saving up for a hardshell tent if you’re going to do a lot of touring. There isn’t a huge difference in setup time between those flip flop tents and a ground tent, if you take into account having to pack up the tent every time you want to drive somewhere. The hardshell is so easy to pack up and all your bedding stays inside, it’s a different thing for moving daily to new places.

    Nearly perfect, i ve bought an Autocamp rooftent from Germany for my jimny, which i will get next year( my jimny), with 45 kilo weight and a sleeping size 160 cm wide and 220 cm long and will mount it on the left side, because then i also don' t need an awning. On the underside of my Autocamp Marcopolo Family tent there is an integrated awning with sidewalls, backwall, frontwall and even a floor. So I m allways protected of wind, rain or animals. I will mount it on the left side to have a shorter way to the back door and even over this back door there is a integrated awning. But until now I had no solution for my water and the fuel tank, but i think, the watertank will get a place inside and for the fuel tank i will build the solution of jeep wrangler, the additional tank in the space of the additional wheel on the back of my jimny. How do you think about this possibility?

    • @RoamOverlanding
      @RoamOverlanding  5 років тому +1

      The only thing I’m concerned about with the fuel on the wheel is that you won’t be able to carry enough, and then you also put a lot of extra weight on the rear door. I think the reality is that living in Europe gives you a lot better access to fuel and you might only need an extra 10L which you might still get enough space to put on roof if you get something like the Eezi Awn K9rack or even a single 20L might still fit and then a single 20L water on the other side. But it’s all about testing and trying to find what works best for you 👍🏻

    If you´re going with the roof tent, and there´s only 2 of you, clamshell is the way to go. For the Jimny a metal clamshell is pointless, if you flip the vehicle it will be totalled, the extra weight is not worth it. I´m not sure but your bumpers also look like metal, they didn't give you any more clearance and the Jimny isn't a rockcrawler, you don't have recovery points in the fornt (those can be mounted to the frame anyway). So you´re adding a lot of weight just for the looks, at least you admit it, but that's taking away off road capability of the vehicle and decreases range.

Handles so much better on both the highway and off-road, I have also changed my awning now to a lighter version so I have managed to drop the roof weight by almost 40-50kg. Huge improvement check out my Instagram from more stuff, @Roam_overlanding

    I really don't understand, why didn't you just use one of the MANY rear tire mounted Jerry can systems. You could easily put 3 gas Jerry cans, and 2 water cans on the back tire... The brand Expedition One comes to mind...
    Honestly I do prefer the Jimny without the roof rack tent entirely though. As an American I find myself really lusting after this vehicle and wishing it was sold here. You would absolutely be the perfect rural commuter. It's small so it would do good and an urban area yeah it's 4x4 capabilities let it really hold up to snow and the like. Also because the seats fold down in the back I could get all of my backpacking or fishing equipment in it.
    Truthfully I think you should buy an old FJ40 or a Suzuki JA71 or a late 80s Jeep Comanche, or even 80s or 90s Jeep Cherokee and overland old school. Your current Jimny could be a lighter build, a more of a adventure scrambler type thing. Keep some hiking and camping equipment in the back. And move all your heavy overlanding stuff to one of those vintage. Oh and by the way those vintage models are cheaper (except for a good Comanche) so you can have two overlanding vehicles

    Great choice of vehicle for 1 or 2 people mate, but a roof tent on something that small is sub-optimal. You have limited payload capacity, I say use it wisely. I would look into a pop-up tent like an OzTent Malamoo or Decathlon 2 second and use the roof rack for additional cargo space...

    • @RoamOverlanding
      @RoamOverlanding  5 років тому

      I wanted to do a oztent Malamoo in the beginning but I actually decided against it in the end, it would take up too much space inside the vehicle. Having a rooftop tent in Africa is certainly not a problem 😂 being off the ground is quite nice. Waking up with the beautiful views isn’t half bad either.

      Roam Overlanding I like when people don’t take the easy option and settle for ok. I like the trailer option as you can leave it as a base camp to explore from if you’re staying in the same area.
      If you need more space a hitch box could help aswell. Might impact on rear clearance a bit.

  • @lonelyroamer
    @lonelyroamer 5 років тому

    Is there a reason why you want a tent on top of your Jimny? I always traveled with my super light 2seconds Quechua tent and I love it. I traveled by bicycle, car and now with my Jimny. Always with it. Slept at -15 Celsius, under storms, under incessant rain. And always worked great.

    • @RoamOverlanding
      @RoamOverlanding  5 років тому +3

      The reason is quite simple; I’m building this vehicle to try and travel across most of Africa, and I will be spending a lot of time camping in the wild with animals and want something to get off the ground away from snakes, scorpions, spiders, lions, hyenas etc etc. maybe one day when I have balls of steel, I will try use a simple small tent on the ground 😂 but even then, at the end of the day a good nights sleep will keep me happy when traveling for weeks.

    • @lonelyroamer

      Roam Overlanding ok. These are good reasons 😃 here in Europe don’t have these problems, fortunately. I woke up surrounded by cows, but there are not so dangerous. Until one of them not decide to lie down on my tent 😁. And in stormy days, it’s not so advisable to sleep on top of a metallic thing. But you have to consider other hidden dangers. Thanks!

    Forget these over weight, under sized, over priced, roof space hogging, wilderness posing but Oh-So-Trendy roof tents and buy an SUV tent!
    They are a fraction of the cost, weigh less than 15 pounds, have way more room, free up roof rack space for lots of other stuff (like a boat or kayaks), don't make you tippy, let you use the cargo area of the Zuk in camp and the heater in the morning (with an exhaust diverter).
    No...a tent packed away in the cargo area doesn't scream "Look at me! I've pissed a couple of thousand dollars away cuz I can" like a roof topper. But I'd rather have my SUZ tent with +6 foot head room, 10x10 floor space, room for a table and folding /chairs/sofa, a workspace out of the bugs and a quick step outside for a whiz at night instead of a Cirque de Soleil climb. I also like a solid cage to hop into when a grizzly comes poking around in the night.
    This Zuki is simply too small for a roofy. It's a great basic 4x4. Don't kill it with tinsel.
