  • 29th May 2021 - we set off from Porthcawl Seafront and ran 40miles along the Welsh Coastal Path. Taking in some breathtaking views of South Wales and it’s Beautiful coastal beaches and bays. Passing through Ogmore Castle, Southerdown Beach, Nash Point, Llantwit Major. Before arriving in Barry to complete the last 10miles of the run to Penarth Pier.
This was meant to be part of the Pegasus Trail Ultra event, however due to Covid restrictions in Wales, the organisers had the difficult decision of postponing the event.
I had trained for the event and still wanted to go ahead with this challenge of completing my first ultra race.
More of a practice run, than a race. It meant I could allow my self the time to make silly mistakes and truly understand all the emotions and struggles that go into a ultra event.
It was a warm day topping out at 21degrees, and the heat and headwind definitely played a part in the overall run.
For some reason I just couldn’t take on any nutrition in the first quarter, everything I sipped or if I tried a gel. It wouldn’t sit right with me. This ended up with me being sick from mile 15 through to 30. As bad as it sounds, once it was all out, I was able to run and take on water and coke.
With that said, it was an experience, this is why I wanted to go out and test my self and my body. To see how and what i could handle.
With a finish time of 5:50 little bit over my target time, I honestly believe without the stomach issues, I would be able to compete at a level I’m happy and satisfied with.
    Thanks for watching
    Tom

Me and my mate are starting around 6.30am from Porthcawl. We are going to run just a tad (😂) slower than you at around 9-9.30 min miles (going on HR) on average so be great to see you on the course

Hi Richard, yes we done the Pegasus event in Powys. (HOWUM) didn’t stop at the aid stations. But they did have a wide variety of food and drinks available. The events are sponsored by Hammer nutrition so you could try there products beforehand if your not carrying your own products.
Vogum is great route though, pretty simple to follow the coastal path signs.

@@tomgraham-tritoultra3504 brilliant I will definitely look into that. any advice for this route? Both pre and post advice like parking or anything you think I could do with knowing ?

I was fortunate to have my dad drive and crew for me on the day, so parking not an issue. Not sure how it works with covid. I think you may have to find your own way to porthcawl and leave your car in penarth.
If you can get down on to the route then I would advise to do so. If not, run the flat and walk the ups. The hills are only short steep blasts however if you try to run them you will quickly be in the Red Zone. Much better to keep it calm and controlled.
Change of socks & shoes if you can after ogmore castle, depending on tide times you may have wet feet like I did. There should be a drop bag location, so I would use that.
Coastal path is well done walked, but just be careful underfoot. Very uneven ground in places and you can quickly twist an ankle if you loose concentration.
If it’s a hot day then take care, not much shade on this course.
