I like the knot tying, & rope splicing videos! It's nice that you take the time to show us how to do this stuff. I'll most likely never have a need to use any of these knots, or splices we see you do, but I enjoy watching it!
The only commercial boat I ever worked on was a boat called the Rosa May, a cod boat that ran two hydraulic Gantry rigs that the owner could run alone. He caught any bottom fish with a season and kept them in a flow through live well. All of their boats were built by Larry Newman who was basically uneducated but he built a lot of double Ender's and one much longer called the Norther Challenge, which ended up close to you. It had a name change but I do not remember the new name. Most of his wood framing came from their sawmill which at one point saw an awful lot of wood go through it. Us kids were too dumb to know we were slave labor, but I wouldn't have fought the work no matter, we just loved to fish, so he (Jimmy) set us up with hand lines and herring and we just caught an awful lot of Ling Cod. I noticed with Ling, that there would be a heavy bite for a half hour, then nothing for about the same time! Then a flurry again. I am envious of your lives because you live much like I did with my parents and my sister. It was a grand time, and you bring some of it back. I never saw Bird Lines but they Are a good idea. If you ever find a way to ship to Canada, I would be a customer but I suspect FedEx will require a lot of money. Is there ever a prawn season?

Hi guys very interesting videos, question when fishing rocky bottom does the longline hang up (snag) on the rocks often if so how do you clear it,? and are there anything you can do to minimize that happening.
Hi Howard. Not much you can do to minimize hanging up on rocky bottom. Most of the time the line will come free, occasionally you get it wedged really bad. You can try to motor around on it and get it pulled out, and if that fails just pull until it breaks off. Then head to the other end of the string and start pulling. As long as you don't hang up and break off again it will pull free.
This was pretty cool. I could cut bait and bait hook for hours just for a nice sized fillet of halibut for sashimi lol. I might need a chair but i could do it. Also that splice was pretty cool to watch, thanks for sharing this whole day.

Nope, they have some surface rust on them but still function quite well. A few have a tip missing or are slightly bent but overall they don't lose any performance.

I noticed that when you were baiting your longline hooks you were leaving the hook point buried in the bait rather than standing proud. Does that not make a difference in hook up rates? Interesting vid again.
I don't believe it does. The halibut slurp the whole piece into their mouth, and when they try to swim off, the hook will come out of the bait and hook them.
I'm glad someone else asked this question! I was thinking the same thing - but figured these guys are the experts and must know what they are doing. I think burying the point makes less difference with softer baits and when bottom fishing where the fish gets a chance to have a good chew on the bait.

I was wondering do y'all have halibut season that that you have to fish and one more thing seems like you have more calm days then we do here Southeast Texas in the Gulf it's always 2 to 4 foot straight up and Down
Hi, redfish. Yeah, the season generally runs mid-March to mid-November. For us, we mostly try to work around the weather, too small of a boat to do anything too crazy. 2-4 foot wind waves aren't uncommon though, and often times an east-southeast swell rolls in from the gulf.

Hi Allan. The bird line is deployed when setting gear to keep birds away from the gear as it is set. If three short-tailed albatross are taken by longline gear in one year it will trigger a closure for all longline fisheries in Alaska for the rest of the year. So it has major economic implications. The birdline is supplied for free by NMFS. Halibut hooks are about $.75 each. The snaps about $1.25. Probably $2.25 total with the gangion.
To be honest, we don't sharpen them. Some tips bend at times, we can usually bend them back, if they break then we'll sharpen it. But overall we just store them properly, always sure to blast them down with wd-40 before storing for the off season.
Hey Terry. Try taping one side of the splice right where the lines meet when you start. It will hold it together while you make the first few tucks. Then it's just over-under, over-under as you spin the line counterclockwise. Turn the slice around, remove tape and rinse and repeat! Good luck.
@@EISAlaska its not the revelling its the under and over thats impossible as there's no system you find your going under and over the stdsnds in your hand and some go to the left and some to the right they don't go round in practice you can say look at the middle strand and it's easy to follow it going round the outside where each strand looks plaited so as I said its impossible xx

What we used to do with our cod hooks when they are not using them is to put them in baking soda and it well keep the rust off the hooks

Ours is 4" and the gap is about 3/16". You can also use PVC. Yeah, that's bad news there, scary stuff. It really gives me peace of mind setting out.

What is the name of the tool you used in splicing the rope ends ?
It's called a fid. They come in various sizes depending on the size of line you need to splice.

Those halibut hooks looked very well used. You didnt reveal your hook sharpening process.

Why do you bait with no hook point showing?
So that it doesn't catch on other gangions in the tub. Really only able to on thick bait chunks, doesn't work on squid.
