Oh, and there were TWO versions of Dirk Gently. An older BBC series, and an American adaptation co-starring Elijah Wood. Both canceled after just a few episodes. ☹
Dead Boy Detectives did not deserve to be cancelled. It has huge fandom potential and it was clear the cast, crew, and writers all loved working on this. I hope this spooky season it gets seen by more people 😢
Thank you for covering this cancellation! Dead Boy Detectives was a brilliant show that deserved to have a season 2. Neil Gaiman apparently was not very involved in the show's production; he has stated publicly that the series isn't his, and he doesn't hold the title or character copyrights. I'd love to see you do a review for the series.
@@Asidian this!! it genuinely upsets me when people attribute dbda to neil when he didn’t really do much to contribute to it. i think i saw that it was about 11 minutes of screen time that he contributed to ultimately?
@@sushioasis Yeah, I think he wrote both scenes with the Sandman cameos, and may have written the very last scene in ep 8. It totaled less than 11 minutes of the entire series. Had it not been moved to Netflix from Max after production of Ep 6 wrapped, I'm not sure his name would be associated with it at all.
I never want to get attached to a Netflix show because it feels like it will get canceled. They don't put a lot of effort into marketing shows unless certains names are on them.
That's something that really upsets me. When you have a great show, all they have to do is make sure customers are aware of it and it would be a hit. But they do nothing.
I personally don't think that the NG alligations played a huge factor since NG actually isn't that involved with Dead Boy Detectives. Yes, they were part of Sandman and NG and Matt Wagner created them originally. But their comics are not by NG and the copyrights to the show belong to Steve Yockey. NG only acted as a writer for a few minor scenes (mostly scenes involving the endless from sandman sprinkled in in retrospect after Neflix bought the show off WB and wanted to tie it to the sandman universe more) and his writing makes up for less than twenty minutes of the 8 hour show. A lot of people make it out like Dead Boy Detectives is somehow his show when it really isn't and he's said so himself in the past. I think Netflix simply cancelled it because it didn't bring enough views/watchhours in the first few weeks after release (due to their own poor marketing and having to compete with Baby Reindeer).
@@me_obviously2839 don't forget that it dropped two weeks before the new season of Bridgerton. It was also originally an HBO series before Netflix got the rights to connect the show to The Sandman

If they really wanted to succeded it shoul it be promoted in the Geeked and release in spooky season. The NG issue is just a poor excuse bc his involvement with the show is minimum.
I loved Dead Boy Detectives and am really upset that it has been cancelled. It's a brilliant show and could have found many more stories for many more seasons. The cast, crew and writers were all ready to continue, indeed season 2 was written. I always say if the cast are happy to continue and there's a fan base then it should continue . Dead Boy Detectives is just like Lockwood and Co. So it is unsurprising that they canceled it. Netflix is just making content for brain rot people. Netflix have to save their money for a 4th kissing booth movie or any season of is it cake.
Man I love dead boy detective honestly from beginning to end it had a lot of Easter eggs a lot of mystery to it overall the characters were just freaking amazing especially Edward and Charles I was getting 1,000% of Charles doing whatever he needs to do to go to hell and save his lover, I really want to keep exploring if they're on and off in their relationship or their friendship do they have companionship together those two but I want to feel that intensity of their companionship like seriously keep exploring these characters how far they will go to stay together or just be friends and stay friends
I liked how you had a shot of the Doom Patrol DBD in the video. Death was not the only sibling of Dream in the show, Despair also had a scene in the Hell episode.
Thank you so, so much for highlighting this show! The fandom is robust and the number of people I hear who have come from out of the woodwork to enjoy this show and create content and celebrate the spooky queerness of this show and its characters. Would love to see you review it all! I’m subscribing in hopes you will 🥹💛
I really enjoyed this show and wish it got the second season, it deserved to continue and should be separated from NG as I believe the characters are not his even though they are in his Sandman universe.
I am absolutely devastated about DBD getting cancelled. The show was actually BETTER than the comic. Funny, flirty, and full of the representation we need!
I would love to hear all your thoughts on this show! It is really special and just didn’t get a chance to grow an audience. If only Netflix had marketed it properly and made the Sandman connection more obvious.
I am so disappointed they cancelled this. I love it so much, especially the queer rep in it and there is just so much potential, where the characters are concerned. I can't imagine they cancelled it because of the NG allegations, because they promote Sandman pretty heavily and also Dead Boy Detectives is not really a Neil Gaiman show. He just originally invented the characters. I'd love for you to do a spoilered reaction video on the show. Please!
Dead Boy Detectives is a fantastic show, and definitely shouldn’t have been cancelled. I don’t think the Neil Gaiman thing should have influenced it much, because he wasn’t really involved in the show -a couple characters are loosely based on his characters, and he did a small part of the writing, but that’s it.
I loved this show so much; it was the first TV show in ages that’s really grabbed me. But as you say, the marketing was DISASTROUS: i didn’t know it existed until I saw a random Instagram story about it! Thank you so much for talking about it; I really enjoyed your video and have subscribed to hear more of your thoughts :)
Probably someone else has mentioned it, but Neil Gaimen gave away the rights for Dead Boy Detectives back in the 90s (or maybe early 00's) so he has little to do with this show (except for 2 scenes he was asked to write before alligations came to light). It's a shame his actions have tarnished the shows reputation.
Ugh, they really should've released it late september/october. I remember watching it in the spring/summer and had a really fun time. It was such a high end Netflix show
Thank you for making this video and it would be great if you could do a review because it could really help in the fight for this show (we're fighting to get it back). But I just wanted to point out that Neil Gaiman wasn't that involved in dead boy detectives, he only partly wrote the comics and is one of the executive producers. In total, he wrote 10 minutes of the show, the executive producers are Steve Jockey and Beth Schwartz. Also, if it got really cancelled because of the Neil Gaiman allegations, Netflix would have also canceled sandman, where he plays a much bigger role. But Netflix hasn't even talked about the allegations. So it can't be about that
Also it’s so unfortunate that Neil’s name is so associated with the show when really he had very, very little to do with it. Steve Yockey, the showrunner, owns the rights and it was really all him and Beth Schwartz and company that created this masterpiece. Not to mention season 2 has already been written (as Netflix requested!!) and is just waiting to be shot. Also this cast, specifically for me brand-newcomer George Rexstrew, put so much into the performances that it’s pretty outstanding to hear about. What I mean to say is that cast and crew were all so passionate about this show. We need to fight to get a season 2, if there is any hope.
I'm just barely watching the first episode of sandman on Netflix when I hit an ad I paused myself on the ads only to come back later to resume it, I am so bummed out that both of the shows that could be connected both of them are canceled what a bummer they have so much potential and I bet they had potentials in TV ratings but I guess that wasn't enough for a season 2 I still have hope that we're going to get an announcement probably on any social media that hopefully we get an announcement and I really believe it because I am so gosh darn hopeful for an announcements We haven't even explored or further more of the characters and what their powers or abilities could do like Crystal for example or Niko in the comic book we need to know if death actually came for Charles.
😅 I was hoping for a crossover about sandman mix with dead boy detectives starting Joenna Constantine visiting the dead boys' office requesting their help.
I agree, I really enjoyed the show and thought the acting was excellent. I am very disappointed that we are to be denied a second season. Yes, a full review would be good
That grind my gear if it's well reviewed on rotten tomato how come we didn't get a season 2 I know it takes a while to make a new fresh season and it could take a while because of writer and stuff, But seriously that is a disappointment great reviews on rotten tomatoes but sadly it couldn't just produce and hatch out like a egg metaphorically of a new season and new fresh episodes to continue where the last started giving us exposition and more information about that ending of dead boy detective
Netflix is all about cancelling high quality shows. Please take a tour of my favorite cancelled Netflix shows below: Deadboy Detectives Lockwood and Co. I Am Not Okay With This Santa Clarita Diet Mindhunter Glow Jessica Jones Shadow and Bone- horrible manipulation of second season that sabotaged this being able to continue. So yep, don’t get attached to anything with a semi-interesting plot or good acting. It will get axed because Netflix hates my unique entertainment algorithm preferences.
the neil gaiman of it all could be a small part of it but the big part is the numbers werent AMAZING. they could have marketed better, given it "the sandman universe" branding, and really pushed it with a fun whimsical trailer "hey you like wednesday? this is like that but british"
I heard about this on a review and watched it because it looked really interesting! I found it enchantingly cute, fun and dark! The actors were fun and so varied that there was someone for everyone to relate to and enjoy! i was SO sad to find out it was canceled, and right when everything was set to get even more exciting!
Get out of town, I meet Fiona Dourif (Bart Curlish in Dirk Gently Holistic Detective Agency) today at a Con. She loved my Bart Curlish: Holistic Assassin Agency shirt, even took a picture of it for herself. She was super sweet and awesome, so good timing.
I definitely agree with that 1st point: they did Not bother the marketing department with this one. I even remember when the Netflix app does that screen phasing thing when the TV sits idle for too long and seeing DBD was coming but had no clue about what it was and even just dismissed it. Had I at least known it was apart of the Sandman universe I would had a reminder set and everything. Lol It wasn’t even til I gave it a look and saw Death that I was just like 😱🤩 “Sandman!” And it took off from there for me. The whole show/cast was just as good to me as the original show so it once again Netflix drops the ball. Idk any more than what she’s mentioned about Gaiman’s legal troubles other than that they exists but RIP Dead Boy Detectives😢😢😢.
me and my brother LOVED this show and only found out it was cancelled after we went to see when s2 would be out,,,😭 i rarely get excited for new shows anymore so it sucked to see one that’s actually good get sacked due to the stupid system streaming sites abide by. i hate that shows aren’t given time to grow anymore.
The Lockwood and Co fandom stands with the Dead Boy Detectives fandom. I am so sorry about the show. I hope we can one day get both of our shows back!!!!
Neil Gaiman is brilliant and it sucks that some of the most brilliant artists of our time have such allegations whether true or false and i honestly think thats why THIS show got cancelled because the reviews were off the charts for this show from what you showed us.... AND I agree in part not good marketing played a factor too, definitely reminding me of why blue beetle didn't do well even though it looked like a great movie
Want to affirm your modeling of the Neil Gaiman situation. Appreciate that you could show just a bit of the complexity of liking someone’s creative product while also taking accusations seriously. It can be very painful. Also loved Dead Boy Detectives! Didn’t know I would love it but I did!
Sandman was FANTASTIC! This show also existed. Kidding of course, I liked it too. Not as much, but it was still a fun watch of minor characters almost no one had heard of prior to them showing up in some other show that was also canceled too soon. Better be some good stuff coming to replace this Gunn, because otherwise I'll watch anyway.
So, Lockwood & Co has been cancelled, DBD has been cancelled, and I've recently found out about this nice show (vibe of the 2000's Disney) Julie and the Phantoms (2020) which was ALSO CANCELLED (I realised smth was wrong when it was close to the end of 9th ep, and they hadn't had a big fight with the villain). So my theory is: Netflix hates ghosts P.S.: JATP is a very good show, it's light and has an AMAZING soundtrack (especially ,,Other side of Hollywood") AND AN OPENLY GAY CHARACTER
Netflix needs to start making more friends with ghosties honestly. Because from the sounds of it, there is lots of fun content that they, themselves, are making. 👻 Seriously. I'll have to check out Julie and The Phantoms. I'm a sucker for a good soundtrack.
Netflix creates good shows, but then for some reason decides to cancel them and I just don't understand it. The villain in JATP is a MASSIVE theater kid and his song just got stuck in my head
This was a fabulous show, sooo much better than Sandman... The characters were a lot of fun, the actors were amazing, and the plots were engaging. Netflix needs to wake up and un-cancel this show, it has tremendous potential and the fanbase is significantly considerate.
When it comes to that stuff about Gaiman... I don't know. I know he has denied them but there are, like, 5 people making them at this point so it's kinda hard to not start looking for the fire when there is that much smoke. And the thing is... I also don't know if my reticence to just side with the victim is due to my own urge to not hear bad stuff about Neil Gaiman or not. I know if this were some artist I didn't like Id probably have just assume the accusers were on point and went with it. So I worry that my own bias is getting in the way here.
I really liked Dead Boy Detectives. Was sad and surprised to hear that it wasn't coming back. Makes sense that the cancellation is related to the accusations against Neil Gaiman. Similar thing happened with Joss Whedon and The Nevers series, the first season of which I also enjoyed. I had noticed that accusations are not well publicized against Neil Gaiman. I wondered if maybe(?) it is because he is known to engage in a BDSM relationships, at least one victim Las far as I know/remember hearing) had been engaging in that type of relationship with him +/- Amanda Palmer, and mainstream media does not know how to handle these types of accusations in that type/realm of relationships and so decided not to touch it with a proverbial twenty foot pole.
Whatever stupid algorithm Netflix uses to determine which shows they are going to renew and how fast they make new seasons is just dreadful. Quite often they take too long to make a second season for even the shows they finally do approve for renewal that the viewership loses momentum.
Why on earth was this cancelled? It was a wonderful show and I was looking forward for the second season! Whom should we talk to to have this reversed and season 2 be done?
Hi! I thought the show was amazing. I think it deserves to be seen by more people (and more people deserve to see it. The way queer arguments are treated feels so sincere and fresh.
@@louielucifer same with Julie and the Phantoms. The show was an instant hit and stayed in the top 10 for several weeks. Plus the soundtrack won awards. Netflix cancelling that show proved to me that they don't care about fans

If you haven‘t watched Dead Boy Detectives, do it! It is so good!

Would love to see a full reaction to the show! #savedeadboydetectives
So it can't be about that
I would personally LOVE to see you explore the full season!!! Subscribing in hopes to catch the episodes as they come out :)
Thanks for making this video about our wonderful Dead Boy Detectives. I'd love to watch a review, and let's hope fans can #SaveDeadBoyDetectives.
Dang, I liked this show.
I would love if you did a full review!! 👀🤞
I'm just barely watching the first episode of sandman on Netflix when I hit an ad I paused myself on the ads only to come back later to resume it,
I am so bummed out that both of the shows that could be connected both of them are canceled what a bummer they have so much potential and I bet they had potentials in TV ratings but I guess that wasn't enough for a season 2 I still have hope that we're going to get an announcement probably on any social media that hopefully we get an announcement and I really believe it because I am so gosh darn hopeful for an announcements
We haven't even explored or further more of the characters and what their powers or abilities could do like Crystal for example or Niko in the comic book we need to know if death actually came for Charles.
😅 I was hoping for a crossover about sandman mix with dead boy detectives starting Joenna Constantine visiting the dead boys' office requesting their help.
I kinda liked it! It was a great YA show. Berlanti n team did a great job
I agree, I really enjoyed the show and thought the acting was excellent. I am very disappointed that we are to be denied a second season. Yes, a full review would be good
That grind my gear if it's well reviewed on rotten tomato how come we didn't get a season 2 I know it takes a while to make a new fresh season and it could take a while because of writer and stuff,
But seriously that is a disappointment great reviews on rotten tomatoes but sadly it couldn't just produce and hatch out like a egg metaphorically of a new season and new fresh episodes to continue where the last started giving us exposition and more information about that ending of dead boy detective
Please give us your thoughts on the whole series. The more attention DBD gets the better
Netflix is all about cancelling high quality shows. Please take a tour of my favorite cancelled Netflix shows below:
Deadboy Detectives
Lockwood and Co.
I Am Not Okay With This
Santa Clarita Diet
Mindhunter
Glow
Jessica Jones
Shadow and Bone- horrible manipulation of second season that sabotaged this being able to continue.
So yep, don’t get attached to anything with a semi-interesting plot or good acting. It will get axed because Netflix hates my unique entertainment algorithm preferences.
Yes to Lockwood and Co! We are trying to save the tv show visit the website link in our bio!
the neil gaiman of it all could be a small part of it but the big part is the numbers werent AMAZING. they could have marketed better, given it "the sandman universe" branding, and really pushed it with a fun whimsical trailer "hey you like wednesday? this is like that but british"
@@serenityq26 The writers and Netflix themselves have confirmed the issues with Neil have nothing to do with the show.
Extremely disappointing! I thought the show was fresh and imaginative.
Dammit I loved this series! - I also loved Lockwood and Co. 👿😠
I heard about this on a review and watched it because it looked really interesting! I found it enchantingly cute, fun and dark! The actors were fun and so varied that there was someone for everyone to relate to and enjoy! i was SO sad to find out it was canceled, and right when everything was set to get even more exciting!
I loved this show, and had no idea it was from Sandman just like you said. It’s disappointing that it’s cancelled.
Was an absolutely great show! Netflix pulls the rug on shows way too fast
Omg wtf why did the runners cancel this beautiful piece of art. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Netflix needs to get in the ring with all the fans. 😭
Well Netflix did it again I find a show I really like and then they cancel it on me. This hurts. Where can I complain to Netflix.
Please do a full review
I am so over Netflix. So many shows I like have been cancelled.
I seen all the shows you talk about. I like them.
I was hopping for the next seasons on all these shows.
me and my brother LOVED this show and only found out it was cancelled after we went to see when s2 would be out,,,😭 i rarely get excited for new shows anymore so it sucked to see one that’s actually good get sacked due to the stupid system streaming sites abide by. i hate that shows aren’t given time to grow anymore.
The Lockwood and Co fandom stands with the Dead Boy Detectives fandom. I am so sorry about the show. I hope we can one day get both of our shows back!!!!
Great show and sad it was cancelled. Dirk Gently was a brilliant show as well and sorely missed 😢
This is my favorite show in a long long time
Thanks, sad will miss the show watched the series 5 times…
Neil Gaiman is brilliant and it sucks that some of the most brilliant artists of our time have such allegations whether true or false and i honestly think thats why THIS show got cancelled because the reviews were off the charts for this show from what you showed us.... AND I agree in part not good marketing played a factor too, definitely reminding me of why blue beetle didn't do well even though it looked like a great movie
Love from Belgium 🇧🇪 ❤ missed it by lack of time. If it cancelled and it finished on a cliffhanger, then there is no need to watch it all
Want to affirm your modeling of the Neil Gaiman situation.
So my theory is: Netflix hates ghosts
P.S.: JATP is a very good show, it's light and has an AMAZING soundtrack (especially ,,Other side of Hollywood") AND AN OPENLY GAY CHARACTER
God damn it! They always cancel the good shit smh
It’s such a good series. I really don’t know why it was cancelled!
I am kind of annoyed Dead Boy Detectives got cancelled, but I think I was more upset about October Faction getting cancelled.
Disappointed its been cancelled. The quality was great.
They made their first appearance in doom patrol
Hi Amanda have a great day and love your voice 😍
Hi! I thought the show was amazing. I think it deserves to be seen by more people (and more people deserve to see it. The way queer arguments are treated feels so sincere and fresh.
Netflix did the same thing to Jupiter's Legacy. People loved the show and Netflix pulled the rug from under it.
@@louielucifer same with Julie and the Phantoms. The show was an instant hit and stayed in the top 10 for several weeks. Plus the soundtrack won awards. Netflix cancelling that show proved to me that they don't care about fans
Their also evidence in the form of what he wrote show capability of it and implies he knows what someone with enough fan can do
