  • When was the first time you picked up a pair of scissors? I remember sitting around a table with one pair to share with my siblings doing various arts and crafts. When I started school there was that scissor rack in the middle of the art room but we all knew what pair was the sharpest. Now as quilters, we still have our favourites, But do we know why they are easy to use or how to keep them sharp? Today’s guest, Ursula McClintock of LDH scissor has all the answers. And I asked as many as I could think of.

Scissors are amazing tools. I just love the sound of shears cutting through fabric. So it was great talking with Ursula so we can choose the best forever shears for how we like to quilt. Enjoy

I love that this is a successful Canadian family run business! I have and love their scissors. But I am also so appreciative of the name of the Company. LDH stands for Love, Dedication, Happiness. Who wouldn’t love a scissor that is made by a company with that kind of motto!! 🤩🤩

    Karen,
As usual (I think you’re spoiling me) another fascinating interview! Who knew scissors could be so interesting. I’m crowding 65 and never knew it was called a button!
Ursula seems like a lovely young woman and a great spokesman for her company. I was thinking about investing in a good pair (or two) of scissors this summer before I start Ren Faire costumes. I will be trying these.
If no one has told you today, you’re a gem! I just want you to know that all the work you put out is very much appreciated.
    Love from Ohio!

So happy to see this. I just bought my first scissors from LDH. I got a couple pairs of the Imperials in really small and small sizes for clipping my appliqué. They came a few days ago and I love them! I also got their rotary cutter and black blades. These blades are awesome and the rotary cutter feels really nice in the hand. Nice to know a bit more about the people behind these beautiful scissors. Next pair will be an 8” shear and I’ll try the little snips she showed. I’ve never used snips.

Another lefty here. Everything she said is so true. I used to twist my neck and wrist in order to cut strait. And I typically make closes, so it is a lot of cutting. My body would hurt so much after cutting my pieces. Last year I got the first pair of proper scissors and it blew my mind. Then I got another 4 for almost all my needs. Unfortunately, tiny ones are only right handed.
About oiling scissors I realized after I bought a pair from fiskars. They came drenched in oil. I use mineral oil that I bought for my sewing machine.
Thank you so much for the interview!

My husband is left handed, except when it comes to scissors. He has always been able to cut with his right hand, but not his left. I LOVE SCISSORS. Many years ago, my husband bought me a school scissor rack to keep my scissors in -- it's full. Each of my machines has its own scissors, I have a small pair on a ribbon that used to hand on my old dress dummy, and I'm afraid I'm in need of a pair of all black ones, now. This was VERY Educational!

I can remember being in Grade 2 with forty-two kids in the class, and five pairs of "lefty" scissors in the box. It's an intriguing thought though...I don't think I have ever owned a really good pair of scissors. :)

Most scissors are made to be used in the right hand. Left handed scissors usually have to be special ordered. A left handed person can be trained to wright, cut and do anything with their right hand (it takes time and slows down development in small children to be retrain). I was born left handed and trained to use my right hand by my mother.
However, almost all sewing machines are made for left handed users. I have always wondered if sewing machines designed to be used from the right would help beginers learn how to machine sew better. There are right facing (handed) sewing machine being made and sold in Australia. I would love to see and try one out someday. I'm wondering if I could sew as well on a right-handed machine?

As a lefty - I find your observation interesting- I am thankful that I was allowed to write ✍️ with whichever hand I chose. My aunt and I both write left handed - I turn my paper she curls her wrist. We both sew but don’t feel the sewing machine is designed for lefties.

My sister and I are both left handed. Theirs no need to retrain "lefty". Theres nothing wrong with it. It's just different from what other people do. One lady actually told me I was handicapped for being left handed. My sister in law confronted a teacher who was smacking my nephews hand because he was using his left hand. That's almost like it was 100 years ago!

A good question would have been
Is it ok to use your fabric scissors to cut batting?
Does it ruin them down the line?
Should we have scissors specifically for batting?

    • @JustGetitDoneQuilts
      @JustGetitDoneQuilts  3 роки тому +4

That's just part of the fabrics of different thicknesses question. Thicker fabrics dull your blades faster as they do more work. Synthetic fabric are harder than natural.

Interesting. I have never heard of this scissor mfg co. I prefer Gingher and also have a pair of Kai scissors. But I sure could relate to the pinking shear question. I have had mine for oh....probably forever. And they are very stiff since I really haven't used them much once I gave up garment sewing and started concentrating on quilts 7 years ago. I will check with the mfg about having the workings cleaned and oiled.
Question- how do you keep the oil from getting on your fabric after servicing your shears?

I recently bought a pair of left handed scissors ( the brand is Fiskars and they weren't cheap) and couldn't understand why they were awful to use and chewed the fabric. I then checked the blades and realised they were right handed but with a left handed handle. Grrrr! I have a pair of Wiltshire scissors I bought 40 yrs ago that are true left handed scissors. It never occurred to me that a well known brand sold at Spotlight ( I'm Australian) would not be what they were marketed as.

I bought a rather expensive set of soft-handled scissors and within a year managed to break them INSIDE the soft handle. grrr...
Then after finally recovering from surgery for trigger-finger on my right thumb, I fell and broke the SAME THUMB. I have hundreds of bones but I had to break that one. The only scissors I can use now are my large-handled embroidery scissors because my thumb doesn't bend the same way anymore. Thank goodness for the rotary cutter!

I gotta pipe in here. Left handed person here. I positively HATE that the scissor market is so right handed. It is terrible finding scissors. There are SO FEW options for us. We usually end up settling for the ugly boring scissors when we long for all the pretties and the perfect pair. Even snips and such. All right handed. 😔

Perhaps spring loaded scissors would help? Some have padded handles and you only have to close them.

I found an essential oils cream at a quilt store called “Two Old Goats” (really!) that actually helps my hands and has nice fragrance. Also, you can try lidocaine cream 4% from your drugstore. Both are essentials in my sewing room and when at work on my computer. Helps keep me going!

My scissors were so sharp, I accidentally cut through a pin. A good pair of scissors can be saved and sharpened. I will have these scissors for life. Not into fiskars or serrated edge scissors….they are junk! I also made a shrinky dink chain that affixes to these scissors that say Mamma’s”. Everyone knows these are mine and not to be used for anything else! A most important tool for any hobby affair!
