Motown never knew what to do with McNair. I have everything she ever recorded for label, released and unreleased, including enough Smokey for two albums. She is brilliant on each and every recording. But it's her doing Motown everyone else has done already when the label should have assigned one great producer to her and a great writing team to serve her. She made fabulous records for the label anyway but even she thought the label didn't know what to do with her.
Well, there was a problem with Brenda Holloway in that she was an unaminated stage perform and always looked as if every small movement had been practiced to the point she was a robot going through the motions. She was, however, a tremendous talent and made exceptional records, so many of them never seeing the light of day. She of course was also an outstanding songwriter and there is where she made her money.
When Mary Wells left (terrible decision on her part but she was lured by the promise of a film contract her new label had no intention of fulfilling) Berry immediately began recording her new songs with the Supremes. So the Supremes, and Diana Ross specifically, became Mary Wells' replacement.
@Umitencho Saleswise, of course, the Supremes more than filled the hole. Motown kept searching for the right Mary Wells-type solo in Brenda Holloway, Chris Clark and even Kiki Dee but they never caught fire (the Chris Clark and Kiki Dee albums are almost interchangeable). Had Mary Wells stayed with Motown she could have gone on with hits forever; Smokey adored her and she was very easy to record. On stage, she was a sensation. Gordy begged her to stay; she wouldn't listen. You know the rest.
I was born December 1982 I love this song
arguably one of the greatest ever Motown tunes, brilliant vocal performance by the classy Barbara backed by beautiful orchestration
She sings this effortlessly! Gives me goose bumps every time!!
Awesome song, awesome singer!
Stunning song, stunning voice, stunning Lady.
What a brilliant record that never fails to just do it. In my top tunes.
Little known fact - The Supremes are doing the background vocals on this song as well as "The Touch of Time."

4 after 8
What a shame - wasted at Motown - have the 45 and it was played to death!
This is going to sound terrible, but I think maybe she was too smart for Motown.
