My dad and grandfather taught me to still hunt. They never used scent killer or camouflage, they just blended in with their surroundings and was very quiet and still.
Hunted from the ground first time this morning in the woods only 100 yards behind my house. I've always been a ladder stand or manmade ground blind hunter. I picked a spot overlooking a ridge bottom and leaned up against a tree. Saw 5 deer and 12 turkey. Wind shifted and was busted then had a doe walk by 30 minutes later, but she was just out of bow range. What a great experience! Can't wait to do it again.
I've watched this several times over the few years. Excellent stuff. Deer can see equally well around them except thirty degrees to their back. Humans look at something and focus in on it, seeing everything to the side without clear focus. Deer, according to the science, see everything with focus except the thirty degrees to their back. The reason a deer, when it sees movement, turns its nose directly at the movement is because it can only determine depth perception thirty degrees to the front side. The front thirty degrees enables a deer to determine distance. So, in some ways their vision is the opposite of humans. Focus three hundred and thirty degrees back to front with the same focus but depth perception is best in the front. Something ground hunters can benefit from knowing.
You should have more subscribers bud. I don't usually waste time listening to this "genre" of talking, especially from another hunter, but you have me hooked. Good stuff
thanks very much, that means a lot. I have in the last year been working really hard to find and build my audience so I have definitely dabbled in different aspects. Unfortunately the "Talking Primitive" series is anything but popular, which is fine. There is still some good content in it for those wanting to follow. currently about 2200 subscribers and growing. hopefully we will start breaking through soon with the hunting videos. Thanks very much for following along. feel free to share my videos as much as you want ;-)
I hunt with a compound bow but love hunting the primitive way. Gives you a rush like no other. I only wish I had watched this video earlier and learned from it before. I hunted some public land at one point and saw some of the biggest bucks I’ve ever seen in the flesh just hunting off the ground where people considered it to be a crappy spot but my inexperience got me busted. Often times times that’s the best way to learn. I still walked out of there happy because I had learned what not to do. Didn’t come home with a giant but came home with the knowledge to get me one
Great tips. Bowhuntung on the ground is a real challenge! Not that stand hunting isn't. I have learned that I drastically underestimated deer intelligence the first half of my life
great video , thankyou. Just into my second week of still hunting with my bow after weeks of blind hunting. What you were saying wouldn't have made sense to me beforehand, but after my experiences with so many doe and 2 bucks coming by me.. at one point 6 ft away while i was standing like a statue next to a tree...i know exactly what you are talking about. I am completely hooked on the still hunting method now.
I have shot all my deer from the ground, and 3 of the Big Bucks I have taken were with a Bow from 20 yrds to 8 steps away. I love hunting this way it is so much more up close and personal.
Me too. I use a big tree to hide my profile or a big rock I hunt in the mountians usually so old dead downed trees and I usually pile a few limbs in front if me just to block my legs. It is a bit hard but very rewarding. I just hate staging a tree stand and then every body knows where your hunting too where as this way no body knows where I've hunted.
I am addicted to the natural ground hunt. Here in the lake country of w. central Minn. I have several canoe-in spots I can hunt close to the shore. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Good info I’ve hunted now for 43 years hunted this type of hunting for the last 30 years for me it’s the best I do use stands but rarely I use a small stool and a snipers veil it’s absolutely the best at eye level!!!! And yes I still get excited! Good tips nice Hardest part is b not moving till the time is right!!!👍 GOOD HUNTING to you!!!!
Great content Ryan, I love your primitive hunting videos. And this video was great for someone like myself who hunts from the ground, it gives me hope and the will to keep at it. Best wishes!
Awesome advice. This is my first year hunting EVER. I harvested my first deer two weeks ago On my 3rd hunt from the ground using a longbow. I have no desire for tree stands or trail cams or any of that stuff! Went back out today and stalked four doe. I was busted though, moved when I shouldn't have. Scouring UA-cam to find more tips from traditional/primitive hunters. Thanks for making the vid man.
I always remove the leaves where I set. Makes it quieter but I. Also think sturing up the fresh ground covers your scent. I've had does walk with in 5 yards of me and killed a nice buck about ten yards from,me,, once ,
Interesting fact about primitive camo: The tassels you see on American Indian dress is designed to break up their profile and make them harder to see, so a type of primitive ghillie suit. They also wore animal skins and crawled to areas with deer. So yes, they did use a type of camouflage.
I like to hunt the same way!! 👍 except I found a spot then I dig a hole put my feet in it then you become very short lol but surprisingly I’ve killed a lot of deer that way
I had the ghillie suit conversation with myself yesterday. Feels wrong wearing a mass produced Chinese made synthetic ghillie suit. As a bald guy I do need to cover my lightbulb head haha
Last year a friend gave me a spray called ever calm ,and it is amazing for ground hunting ,because even if the deer see you they stay calm , I thought I was going to be blown by an old doe and she saw me and yet she didnt blow and as she walked on and started to feed I put a stone tipped arrow right though the pump station and she only went maybe 30 yards
You should come out toCalifornia and hunt for blacktails. What an interesting animal. A lot of the timeI'll be walking through the woods, hiking or collecting, not minding the wind or trying to be quiet, and chancing upon a buck or two or three and they'll just look at me. And stay there for a minute or so just looking. Within arrow range. Then slowly drift away as they browse. I don't know if it's the same with white tails or not. It seems their strategy is to stay quiet even if something is approaching. Then they will run away when you pass them. Or if you spot them first they will just stare and walk away slowly
Your videos have really been helpful, I'm late to the game hunting never got a chance as a kid so here I am now. Out here in Lakeland FL if you have any tips or good locations I'm always willing to hear you out sir
I keep trying to figure out how to hunt without carrying tons of gadgets and a pack full of stuff. This is encouraging and I think I will try this. I am also getting tired of carry things that get heavier each year. I hunted in a tree last year and saw an older doe come out of the woods looking up in the tees. What does that tell you?
What type of quiver you use when you go ground hunting? How much arrows you have with you? It would be great if you can make a "Talking Primitive"-Video about your equipment on a primitive hunt, especially the quiver. :-)
I'm a ground hunter and my biggest problem is the deer come in literally ontop of me and i end up getting busted by one of their keen sences ! Although a doe blowing doesn't always scare the other deer away but it will make deer / bucks come into investigate cause does tend to blow at bucks that are chasing them around etc. So bucks don't always scare off when another deer blows at you !
yup deer do look up just found your channel And subscribe I thought I was the only primitive weapons Hunter out there I'm seeing a lot of building videos but not no one hunting with their primitive Technologies
Ryan Gill thanks and you make beautiful Bose I checked out your website and I love that snake skin back and you do I've never done that on any of mine I've always just birch bark Oil Stain them
I killed my first deer while standing by a tree. My brother taught me to hunt that way. Over the years I’ve gotten away from doing that but need to get back to doing that way

yeah for sure. It's definitely more challenging.

I normally cant sit through a video of just talking but I watched this video all the way through. Very interesting stuff

8 years late but thank you for making this video!
Excellent advice. I'm new to hunting but ground and still hunting seems a lot more versatile.
I had the ghillie suit conversation with myself yesterday. Feels wrong wearing a mass produced Chinese made synthetic ghillie suit. As a bald guy I do need to cover my lightbulb head haha

Awesome man. New to bowhunting here in GA and don't feel like using a tree stand. Your tips give me hope for a deer this year!!

+Lucas Black tails are definitely on my list to hunt.

I close my eyes when they look up at me. I feel they are never looking at my knees.
Same. I close one and squint the other. Keep your head at a downward tilt.

I can't stand carrying stuff. Often times I have nothing but my bow and quiver.. and even then I hate carrying my quiver!
What type of quiver you use when you go ground hunting? How much arrows you have with you? It would be great if you can make a "Talking Primitive"-Video about your equipment on a primitive hunt, especially the quiver. :-)
will do

I killed my first deer while standing by a tree. My brother taught me to hunt that way. Over the years I’ve gotten away from doing that but need to get back to doing that way
Tree stand hunting is kind of cheating to me. Same kind of hunters that pay someone to butcher it.
